2 WEST WINDS September 18, 2017 Page 2 NEW CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION STUDENTS Mildred Ingram was born in San Angelo, Texas. She is married to Lacy Ingram, Jr. and has two sons, Lacy Ingram, III and Lance Ingram. She is currently employed as an Executive Assistant. She serves as an Elder at her local church and the Director of Education. She also volunteers as a Chaplain at Sentara Hospital. Her favorite scripture is Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. Barbara Sullivan grew up in Dallas and Houston, Texas. She moved to Salt Lake City, Utah for the skiing and stayed for many years. She recently retired from working in the substance abuse addictions field and relocated to Arlington, Virginia. Barbara is a lay chaplain and is a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Arlington. She has two adult daughters, Rachael and Julia. This is Barbara s second unit of CPE. BLUEMONT PARK WALKING TRIP Join us for a short leisure walk and visit to Bluemont Park in Arlington, VA on Thursday, September 21. The bus departs at 10:00 a.m. from the front lobby (Transportation cost $6). Bluemont Park is a beautiful 70-acre pastoral park that offers many activities and amusements. It is a model of sustainable design including natural resources management, which has allowed native plant species to flourish. We will be taking a short walk along the trail to the scenic shelter where we will have a healthy snack and do some nature viewing. There is much to see! Please wear comfortable attire and gym shoes. Sign up in the Resident Business Center or contact Sherry Compton, Fitness Manager for more information at Ext FLU VACCINATION CLINIC Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors visits, and flu-related hospitalizations. Increasing the number of people who get vaccinated each year helps to protect more people, including older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications. We hope to see you at this year s Flu Clinic! NOTES FOR THE WEEK Episcopal Confirmation Service at Grace Episcopal Church, Alexandria- On Sunday, September 24, resident, Dr. Yolanda Oertel, will be confirmed as a member of the Episcopal Church at a regional confirmation service at Grace Episcopal Church (3601 Russell Road), Alexandria. The service begins at 4:00 p.m. and will be followed by a brief reception. All are invited and welcomed to attend. Grace Episcopal Church has an elevator and a disabled-access entrance. A GHBC bus will be available for up to 13 residents to attend the service and reception. Bus will leave at 3:00 p.m. and return to GHBC around 6:15 p.m. Sign up in the Resident Business Center. $6 transportation fee. This Thursday morning, September 21, the WhatNot Shop will be open to receive contributions. If you have a few things you no longer need but that are much too good to toss out, now's the time to give them a new home. Come down between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Fashion and design have always been an integral part of the art world, and this is an opportunity to create your own style. 1:00 p.m. Art Film I Never Tell Anybody Anything: The Life and Art of Edward Burra. Burra was one of the most elusive artists of the 20th century. Long underrated, his reputation has suddenly been rehabilitated with record breaking prices being paid for his work at auction. This class is open to residents of all skill levels. Group and individual instruction on watercolor painting is available in this class. COMMUNITY CORNER Those of you who live in the Crossroads, have you ever wondered why there is a space underneath your door? It really isn t just so you could tell what TV program your neighbor was watching when you walked by. It serves a real purpose that contributes to your good health. This space needs to be maintained in order to deliver fresh air into the apartment. Because the air convectors use recycled air in the apartments, the only way to inject fresh air, by building code, is to deliver it through the space under the doors. Air is removed from the interior by the constant exhaust fans located in the bathrooms and the kitchen. The only way to bring the fresh air in is through the hallways and, consequently, under the doors. If the space under the doors is blocked by a rug or some cute elongated doggie cushion, the air in the apartment would become stale and perhaps stagnant. The air needs to be rotated in order to maintain the buildings clean air standards. This is all known as balanced ventilation. So, a word to the wise. Do not try to block air from entering your home through the door. Ignore the slight draft or wind sound and remember that it s a welcome guest. Just remember your air in the hallways represents the inside temperature while the air in the Pointe hallways represent the outside temperatures, and be glad! Dottie Moser, Resident
