The first Lenten talk is Monday, February 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel. C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. Pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church will be here to talk on the Way We Were: Choosing Gratitude for the Past; Deciding upon Joy in the Present; Imagining Hope in the Future. Future dates for this series are on Monday, February 29, and Monday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18, will be another big sale day at the WhatNot Shop. Come down between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m. and you'll find bargains galore! FOREIGN AFFAIRS TALK: TURKEY AND ERDOGAN On Wednesday, February 17, at 7:15 p.m., fellow resident Bob Dillon will speak on this very timely topic in the Auditorium. Bob spent over 30 years in the Foreign Service, much in the Middle East, including Turkey and in Lebanon where he served as our ambassador. He subsequently was an Assistant Secretary General of the UN and served as the Chief Operating Officer of UNRWA, the UN agency charged with the handling of Palestinian refugees. Later he headed a nonprofit supporting education for people of the Middle East. Bob speaks Turkish and was in Turkey as recently as this past Fall.

2 WEST WINDS February 15, 2016 Page 2 RESIDENT SERVICES COMMITTEE The Resident Services committee deals with many issues affecting the quality of life of Goodwin House residents. Planning guest speakers and performers, special evening entertainment, Art Center trips, classes in the Fitness Center and Pool, Beauty Salon offerings are some of the issues the committee addresses every month. The committee meets on the third Thursday of the month at 2:30 pm in Top of the West. We are looking for new members who are interested in leading programs, organizing trips or assisting with events. All residents are encouraged to attend and contribute comments and ideas whether members of the committee or not. Please plan to join us this Thursday, February 18, at 2:30 p.m. in the Top of the West. THURSDAY EVENING MOVIE: CAROUSEL Carousel was the second great musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the stage (following Oklahoma), opening in 1945 where it ran for two years. Richard Rodgers said that this was his favorite musical of his career. We will show the movie version from Thursday, February 18, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. 129 minutes. Rated-G. SENIOR QUEST FOR MEANING SERIES (RESCHEDULED DATE) Hard Choices by Loving People Rev. Hank Dunn will discuss the emotional and spiritual issues of patients and families as they deal with life-threatening illness and offer practical guidance for dealing with the end-of-life medical decisions that we must all confront. Join us on Monday, February 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Refreshments will be provided by the Goodwin House Foundation. Goodwin House Social Workers will be on hand after the presentation for discussion or questions about advance directives. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN WITH LESLEY LEE FRANCIS, Ph.D. Join us for a special lecture from Dr. Lesley Francis designed to share insight with a historical perspective on the famous poem written by her grandfather, Robert Frost. Information on how to obtain a copy of her recent book YOU COME TOO: My Journey with Robert Frost is available in the resident business office. Friday, February 26, at 3:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Any that you re willing to part with can be placed in a donation box right outside of the RS Office (next to the Board Room). They will be put to good use as music for residents involved in the Music and Memory Program. Please Note: The next Town Hall Meeting will be on Wednesday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium The Music Committee has set a date to meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in the Top of the West.

4 WEST WINDS February 15, 2016 Page 4 FROM THE ART CENTER Monday, February 15 10:00 a.m. The Painting Style of Toulouse-Lautrec We will examine the painting style of this famous Post- Impressionist painter, and create preliminary drawings based on his work. 1:00 p.m. Art Film The Post-Impressionists Toulouse Lautrec ( ) Lautrec was a French painter who captured the theatrical and colorful life of Paris in the late 19 th century. When the Moulin Rouge opened, Lautrec was commissioned to produce a series of posters which are now modern-day icons. Tuesday, February 16 9:45 a.m. Art Trip We will be visiting the Renwick Gallery to view the exhibition Wonder. The bus will depart the museum at 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. Painting Working from drawings and examples of Lautrec s work, create your own paintings that incorporate rich color, fashion, and drama. 3:00 p.m. Drawing We will be working from a live model on twenty-minute figure drawings. Wednesday, February 17 11:00 a.m. Ceramics Create coiled pots based on a variety of techniques. 2:00 p.m. The Painted Face Many of the faces in Lautrec s paintings look like masks. We will incorporate the theme of masks into our paintings. Thursday, February 18 1:00 p.m. Talk on Sue Grace s Exhibition Crossroads Gallery This 30-minute tour and discussion led by Art Center Coordinator Anthony Brock will examine some of the representational and abstract elements in Grace s paintings. 2:00 p.m. Wood Carving COMMUNITY CORNER Does it ever seem curious to you that we have some residents who walk through our lobby area and halls using ski equipment as if they were actually on the slopes of Round Top Mountain?...and the rugs aren t even slippery! Well, it seems that Sara and Leslie, the Fitness Center Gurus, have brought a program to GHBC called Nordic Walking. While using these Nordic Walking poles, your body tends to be straighter (meaning you re developing good posture), you maintain a good sense of balance, and there is less stress on your joints. Sounds like a walking program from which we could all benefit! All in all, the Fitness Center offers a variety of 29 classes each week of which Nordic Walking is only one. If you included more exercise in your New Year s resolutions, now is the time to stop by the Fitness Center and pick up from the counter a listing of all programs being offered with an explanation of what each program can do for you.
