Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Thank you for signing up for our Dinner Theatre event on Tuesday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. The event is sold out. If you signed up at a table, please check the guest list located in the Resident Business center as soon as possible. We ask that residents who are no longer interested in attending, cross their names off of the list by Sunday, March 18. Residents on the waitlist will be contacted if seats become available. All attendees are welcome to dress in 1920 s attire (not required). Please join us promptly at 6:00 p.m. and take a seat at your designated table. Residents will be selected by table to visit the Italian buffet located in the Auditorium lobby. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will end at approximately 8:45 p.m. Your name must be on the guest list to attend this event. 2 WEST WINDS March 19, 2018 Page 2 SPRING FLING 2018 AN EVENING WITH THE STARS PERFORMANCES, BOX OFFICE AND TICKETS Spring begins officially on March 20! Here at GHBC that can mean only one thing Spring Fling is just around the corner. Your friends, neighbors, and staff members are bringing out their sheet music; their musical instruments; dusting off their dancing shoes; fashioning costumes; and generally preparing to wow the audience! Join us for a very special 25th Anniversary Spring Fling! This year Spring Fling will have afternoon and evening performances on Wednesday, April 4, at 2:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. This will be a ticketed event. Tickets are free but are necessary to ensure a seat in the Auditorium for everyone at both shows. The Box Office will be held in the Rotunda on Tuesday, March 20,and Wednesday, March 21, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Don t wait until it s too late This event will quickly sell out. Tickets are for Residents only. GREAT DECISIONS- SOUTH AFRICA If you are interested in US foreign policy and the challenges the US faces in today s turbulent world, do not miss the Great Decisions session focused on South Africa at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 in the Auditorium. Following a film about this still very young nation, new resident Dr. Norman Neureiter will lead a discussion about the immense challenges facing that nation and what they mean for the US. With the present turmoil in America s foreign policy machinery, it will be very interesting to hear the views of residents, especially those with knowledge on Africa. If you don t think South Africa is important, go look at a map and see how it covers the entire lower portion of the African continent. And I suspect that few of you know that it once came close to becoming a nuclear state. UPDATES FOR EVENING FOREIGN AFFAIRS TALKS Our March 27th speaker has changed. The Vietnamese Ambassador has decided that he will be unable to join us. Fortunately, another speaker whom we have been pursuing has agreed to come on Tuesday, March 27. He is Ishaan Tharoor, who writes for the Washington Post s electronic edition, Today s WorldView. A more informative announcement on his talk will also appear in West Winds. Aaron Miller will be unable to give his talk on Israel and Palestine on Tuesday, April 24. However, he has rearranged his other commitments and will speak here on Friday, April 13. Brig. Carr-Smith of the British Embassy has confirmed his availability to speak here on Monday, April 2, on BREXIT and NATO. RECYCLING TIPS: CANS First, rinse all cans. Place TIN cans in the blue recycling bin on your floor. Place ALUMINUM cans in the blue bin labeled Aluminum in the Mail Room. Soda and cat food cans are generally aluminum. To determine the difference, place a magnet near a can; if it s tin, the magnet will snap onto it. If you need a magnet for this purpose, contact Jane McKeel at ext

COMMUNITY CORNER MARCH: A month full of meaning. It isn t just about celebrating St. Patrick s Day and the start of spring. March was named for the Roman god of war, Mars. It would seem the Pentagon agrees with the Roman tradition of waiting until the end of winters to wage war. With the exception of the recent War in Afghanistan, almost all major US-NATO led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March. On a happier note, it is the month of March Madness and all basketball fans are excited! I hope we all remembered to turn our clocks forward on the 2 nd Sunday to comply with Daylight Saving Time Arizona and Hawaii chose not to do this. One thing that is most interesting are the groups receiving Nation recognition in March i.e. National Breast Implant Awareness, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain injury, Women s History, and Professional Social Work. National recognition is also given to the following food groups: celery, frozen food, noodle, peanuts, and nutrition. Now for some in-house March history: At the turn of the century eighteen years ago, Dick Graham was unanimously reelected Chair of the Resident Council and Ken MacGowan was appointed Chair of the BOM (building and maintenance) Committee. There was a resident recipe-of-the-week contest and the winner s recipe was served at lunch the following Wednesday On Tuesdays and Thursdays transportation to Goodwin House Alexandria was provided for use of their pool AARP provided volunteers to help with Income Tax forms. A speaker from the US Customs Service, together with dogs, came to demonstrate how the dogs were trained to identify luggage containing narcotics. A semi-annual dinner dance was held. Life was as interesting and fun then as it is today! Dottie Moser, Resident
