1 MOUNT PROSPECT SENIOR SENTINEL NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 MEDICARE D PRESCRIPTION DRUG OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD Open enrollment for Medicare D begins October 15 and goes through December 7, Every year brings changes in premiums, co-pays, deductibles and drugs covered for all drug plans! Staff uses a tool available on the Medicare website to help you determine which plan is best for you for the upcoming year. In addition, they will assess whether you are eligible for extra help with your plan premiums and co-pays. Anyone that would like assistance with enrolling or reviewing his or her current plan should call 847/ to obtain a worksheet. The worksheet must be completed and returned before an appointment may be scheduled. There is limited availability for appointments. 2 NEW LOCATION FOR THE LIONS CLUB FARMER S MARKET The Mount Prospect Lions Club Farmer s Market opened May 13 and runs every Sunday through October 14, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The market is now located at the Mount Prospect Train Depot EAST Commuter Parking Lot on the southeast corner of Northwest Highway and Emerson Street. This market offers a wonderful array of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and other fresh produce, as well as the finest shrimp in town! Yes, the shrimp truck will be there, again, but not every week, so if you miss it you ll have to come back again. You will be happy you did! The Scrabble group meets every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. and they are looking for more players! Bring your friends and neighbors and join in the fun! SENIORS FRIENDSHIP CLUB The Seniors Friendship Club would like to invite all senior citizens, fifty years of age and more, to join them. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Mount Prospect Village Hall, 50 S. Emerson Street, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. There is a short business meeting and afterwards refreshments are served. We hold a 50/50 raffle and Bingo is played, so come and join us. It is a nice time to get together and socialize! PINOCHLE GROUP The pinochle group plays single deck every Wednesday evening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and play begins at 7:00 p.m. (Doors are then locked at 7:00 p.m.) Both cutthroat and regular pinochle are played. Partners are not needed, so please join the group any Wednesday you feel like playing. Mount Prospect Senior Sentinel 2

3 DONATE SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE From now through August 1, the Village of Mount Prospect Human Services Department will be collecting school supplies for families in need living in Mount Prospect. These families came to our attention through area schools, police, fire department, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. With your help, children can start the school year looking forward to learning, making friends and developing necessary life-long skills. Collection bins are located at Village Hall (50 S. Emerson Street) the Mount Prospect Public Library (10 S. Emerson Street), the Community Connections Center (1711 W. Algonquin Road) and the Police/Fire Station (112 E. Northwest Highway). Monetary donations will also be accepted and allocated to the purchase of needed supplies. Checks should be made payable to: Mount Prospect Emergency Food Pantry (in the check memo, please write School Supplies".) The Afternoon Encore series consists of periodic art, cultural, and life skills programs previously presented on Tuesday nights, now offered during the day. 5 DOWNTOWN SUMMER BLOCK PARTY 2018 Friday and Saturday - July 27 & 28 Emerson Street & Busse Avenue, Mount Prospect, Illinois Friday Hours: 4 PM - 11 PM Saturday Hours: 11 AM - 11 PM The Village of Mount Prospect and the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce welcome all residents and guests to this highly anticipated community event. Join neighbors and friends for great food and entertainment. The weekend festivities draw thousands of attendees each year. Free kids activities on Saturday, which includes bounce houses, inflatable slide, mini rides, balloon artist, face painters, ponies and more! Admission is free! (No outside coolers allowed.) 6 LIFELINE / EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION The Mount Prospect Fire Department Lifeline Program provides vital information to the emergency medical team when the resident cannot speak. In emergency situations, the paramedics look for the "LIFELINE" red plastic envelope affixed to the outside of the victim's refrigerator. This envelope contains important personal, medical and insurance information about the victim. The packets may be obtained at The Mount Prospect Human Services Department. FOOD PANTRY ASSISTANCE Our Emergency Food Pantry is available to all Mount Prospect residents, including senior citizens. After a financial assessment has been made, qualified residents are able to visit the food pantry once a month. Appointments for the assessments and subsequent food pick-ups are necessary and can be made by calling the Human Services Department at or the Community Connections Center at All calls are anonymous no caller ID No recording devices. No name. Reward is up to $1,000 if caller information leads to an arrest. Mount Prospect Senior Sentinel 6

7 Senior Groups Descriptions CARDS There are a number of card groups that meet at the Community Center. Contract and Pinochle are usually the games of choice. It is recommended that anyone participating in a card group arrive at least fifteen minutes before starting time. MAHJONG This group meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. MEN S CLUB This club meets at 12:30 noon every Wednesday. After a brief update on club news, the men play cards and shoot pool. Coffee and sweet rolls are served, too. MOUNT PROSPECT WOMAN S CLUB This club is a philanthropic organization supporting many worthy causes such as the Food Pantry, Historical Society, WINGS, Hines Veteran Hospital, Scholarships, etc. The club also hosts card parties, luncheons, and fashion shows. Meetings are held at 12:00 noon on the 1st Tuesday of the month, September through May, at the Village Hall Community Room. Call Jodi Hansen at for more information. PINOCHLE This group meets every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. There is a Tournament Pinochle Group on the third Wednesday of each month from September through May. To play in the tournament, you must join the group in September. Regular Pinochle meets every Wednesday throughout the year. MUSIC The Sentimentalists Senior Chorus meets every Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., September through December; then April and May. They are a friendly group that enjoys singing a variety of familiar music. They occasionally perform for other organizations. SCRABBLE The Scrabble group meets every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. All are encouraged to come in for a game or two. SENIORS FRIENDSHIP CLUB The club gets together on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 1:00 p.m. Stop in for assorted programs, luncheons, Bingo, etc. YOUNG AT HEART CLUB This group plays assorted card games every Monday at 9:00 a.m. Mount Prospect Senior Sentinel 7
