The deadline for entries is Monday, July 25. Your ballot can be submitted at the reception desk. Save the date for our Patio Party on Thursday, August 4, at 10:00 a.m. taking place on the Boardroom Patio. Garden box winners will be announced and refreshments will be served. Stay up to date with the latest news of the community at this month s Town Hall on Thursday, July 28, at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST SAVE THE DATE Christmas in August Bazaar and Raffle! Friday, August 19, in the Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Santa will need helpers. See the volunteer sign-up sheets in the Rotunda. The event will include lovely specialty raffle baskets. Watch for pre-event ticket sales in the Rotunda.

Nguyen received his Bachelor s Degree from the University of Virginia and his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia.

2 WEST WINDS July 25, 2016 Page 2 MEET OUR NEW INTERNIST ON JULY 26! Dr. Uy Nguyen, MD, CMD will be joining Goodwin House as a new internist in the first week of August. He will be accepting new patients from all levels and have visiting hours at the Clinic on Tuesday afternoons. Dr. Nguyen received his Bachelor s Degree from the University of Virginia and his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency at the George Washington University Center. He established his own practice in Arlington in 1999 and continues to see patients at this office. Dr. Nguyen has a wealth of experience with older adults. He served as the Medical Director of Westminster at Lake Ridge, HCR Manor Care of Arlington, Community Residences Foundation Mental Health Services, and CarePeople Home Health and Hospice Care Service. Please join us on Tuesday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium to meet Dr. Nguyen. He will be giving a presentation on hypertension. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. MOVIE TRIP TO ANGELIKA FILM CENTER Join us for lunch and a movie at the Angelika Film Center in Fairfax on Thursday, July 28, (Bus departs at 11:30 a.m.) The Angelika Film Center and Cafe at Mosaic has become one of the most dynamic facilities in the Greater D.C. area. Exhibiting the highest quality art, independent, and specialty film, this state-of-the-art boutique cinema features the latest in digital projection and sound technology, plush velour stadium-designed seating, and a cutting-edge theatrical environment. We will be attending the film screening for Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen's bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY. Travel back to the 1930s, following young Bronx native Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) as he moves to Hollywood, falls in love, and returns to New York to be swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby's colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age. A total of $21 will be charged to resident accounts for your $10 transportation fee and $11 Senior matinee ticket. Tickets will be pre-purchased. A variety of lunch options are available in the theatre Café. Please sign up in the Resident Business Center. GHBC CONFIDANT PROGRAM Privacy laws prohibit GHBC staff from sharing protected health information about residents. In an effort to keep friends connected, the Resident Health Committee initiated the Resident Confidant Program several years ago. The program continues with support from the Social Worker for Residential Living as the designated staff liaisons. Each GHBC resident may designate a fellow in-house resident as their confidant. In the event of a hospitalization or relocation, the Reception Desk will contact the resident s designated confidant as soon as possible and between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. While no action is required of the confidant, s/he will be notified as to your whereabouts. Please note that specific health information will not be shared. Confidant designation forms are available from all GHBC Social Workers. If you are interested in participating in the GHBC Confidant Program, please complete a confidant designation form and return the completed form to Social Work. If you currently participate in the Confidant Program, please use this notice as an opportunity to review your designation and make any necessary changes. What comes across is a detailed portrait of a political dynasty that figured prominently in American history and continues to do so in the new millennium. The documentary includes an interview with historian Robert Dallek. Tuesday, July 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Media Room. 60 minutes, WEDNESDAY EVENING MOVIE: MAIGRET For this week we've scheduled episode #16 of the Maigret detective series as made for French TV, Maigret's Mistake. A woman is found murdered on the third floor of a respectable building. Maigret's attention is focused on an indifferent character who lives on the floor above. We don't normally expect Maigret to make mistakes in his investigations, so what happened in this episode? Wednesday, July 27, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. 1994, 83 minutes, with English subtitles. SATURDAY EVENING MOVIE: HELLO MY NAME IS DORIS Inspired by insights gained through a self-help seminar, 60- year-old Doris Miller brazenly steps forward to pursue the affections of a much younger coworker -- and inadvertently becomes a hit with his hipster cohorts. Starring actress, Sally Field. Saturday, July 30, at 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. NOTES FOR THE WEEK Join us for SHINE in the Formal Parlor On Monday, July 25 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Residents attending the Annapolis Daytrip on Tuesday, July 26, at 10:00 a.m. should wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothing. Please bring money for your lunch at the Crab Deck. Goodwin Players will meet in the Top of the West on Wednesday, July 27, at 1:30 p.m. Outdoor Lawn Games We have added a light-weight corn hole set to the coat closet in the atrium for resident use along with our croquet set. Residents can borrow the games by going to the front desk and signing out the key to the gate for the front lawn area. The area next to the Knoll Garden, previously designated for these games, is currently under repair for sprinkler issues. Special Announcement Art Trip Artist Martin Puryear s exhibition Multiple Dimensions is now on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He is best known for his playful and elegant sculptures. This exhibition reveals Puryear s artistic process by displaying his prints and drawings that inspired his sculptures. Thirteen sculptures are on display for the first time. The trip takes place on Wednesday, August 3. The bus departs GH at 11:00 a.m. and departs the museum at 1:30 p.m. The sign-up sheet will be in the Business Center on Monday July 25 at 10:00 a.m.

Simply scratch the surface of the paper and a wide variety of colors are revealed under the surface. Create designs with amazing details and color! 1:00 p.m. Art Film The Running Fence Revisited This film documents the landmark outdoor artwork created by artist Christo in The beautiful white fabric fence covered 25 miles of the California coastline before dramatically dropping into the Pacific Ocean. The film covers the complex trials and errors of this monumental artistic undertaking. Tuesday, July 26 10:00 a.m. Ceramics Come in and glaze the collaborative house project residents have been constructing over the last several weeks. Add interiors and exteriors to the house as we begin to create a tiny clay village! 2:00 p.m. Scratch Art and Mixed Media Create scratch art cards, paintings, and portraits using a variety of media including pencils, markers, and paint. 3:00 p.m. Drawing Draw from life-size dolls of children! These dolls are great subjects for drawing and are amazingly realistic! So realistic you think they might speak! Wednesday, July 27 2:00 p.m. Scratch Art Collage Having practiced the techniques and nuances of scratch art boards over the last several days, we can incorporate them into small artistic collages using colored and textured papers. Thursday, July 28 2:00 p.m. Wood Carving Wood carving might sound difficult, but with the assistance of our expert wood carving teachers, Joel and Mike, it is a fun and rewarding endeavor! Learn several techniques that can be used in creating a variety of shapes and objects. Come see some of the amazing projects residents are currently working on. COMMUNITY CORNER Don Stanton, Colorado s gain is our loss! He will be missed! We have looked forward to his leading us, on a monthly basis, in very worthwhile discussions on the world of Current Events. His style of encouraging discussion, opinions, and personal experiences have led to a time of learning and sharing for most of us, unlike any we have ever experienced before, with a large group of our peers on a regular basis. He left us with a challenge that perhaps one or two of our residents would step up and continue to facilitate this type of a program which encourages participation and accepts the right of all to express their thoughts and opinions. If continued on a monthly basis, there would be time available for research and developing agendas. Any takers? Dottie Moser, Resident
