There s a reason why Charles Dickens holiday classic A Christmas Carol is called immortal! It s one of the most cautionary yet heartfelt stories ever written, and it s as much a part of the season as eggnog and mistletoe. So mark your calendars for a special event, because on Wednesday, December 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium, the Goodwin House Players along with several staff members will present a semistaged production of the beloved story directed by Eddie Page and produced by Howard Smith. COMMUNITY CORNER This may not be a winter wonderland but sleigh bells ringing is an all to familiar sound around this time of the year. It s known as the official siren signaling in the winter season. The song JINGLE BELLS, also known as One Horse Open Sleigh was written in 1857 and is one of the most popular and recorded songs on Earth. (It was originally meant for Thanksgiving). While a well known signature staple on sleighs, Santa suits and reindeer, jingle bells haven t always been associate with Christmas. They do much more than ring in holiday cheer. Jingle bells are in the percussion family of instruments. These small bells were known in ancient times in Sumer, Babylonia, Assyria, and Egypt and were commonly suspended from the trappings of horses, mules and camels. Centuries ago, sleigh bells were fastened to horses to signal the approach of someone important or to warn pedestrians of an approaching vehicle. (Sleighs were unable to stop quickly enough so they needed a warning signal.) William Barton opened the first American sleigh bell company in East Hampton, Connecticut in East Hampton eventually became known as Belltown because it produced so many bells. Sleigh bells are rarely used to produce specific pitches. Mozart, however, prescribed this in the third of his Three German Dances. Also, did you know the sleigh bells were one of the first instruments to be played in space? In 1955, Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra, smuggled bells and a harmonica onto their spacecraft and played JINGLE BELLS for mission Control as a light-hearted holiday joke. The above information can be found in a book by MINKI ONWUDINJO entitled 10 fun facts about sleigh bells. I have made a selection and hope you enjoy! Dottie Moser, Resident

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS ANNOUNCMENTS FROM THE CHAPLAIN On Sunday, December 3, at 10:30 a.m. we lit the first purple candle on the Chapel advent wreath, marking the beginning of our Advent pilgrimage for the next four Sundays and weeks before Christmas Day. The candle lighting marks our journey but also reminds us to wait, watch, and prepare as we move prayerfully and not hurriedly to Christmas. We are urged to enjoy the joys and miracles along the way, and be less focused on the destination. Stop, look, listen, reflect. The next three Sundays at 10:30 a.m., we will light the first and the additional candles as we count the weeks. We still have opportunities for one or more persons to read and light the wreath for our Advent 3, Advent 4 and Christmas Eve services (when it become a Christmas wreath for our services during the Christmas season). Let Chaplain Theresa Brion Ext know if you are interested in participating in this liturgy. The Community Christmas Eve service will be Sunday, December 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of All Saints. All members of the community (residents, staff, family and friends) are welcomed! This is our first celebration of the 12-day Christmas season. Throughout the rest of December and into early January you will discover a variety of opportunities to feed your spiritual being. Check out the West Winds calendar for a listing of the weekly, monthly, and special events sponsored by the various religious and spiritual communities that make the GHBC community who it is. If you need help locating what your soul desires, contact Chaplain Theresa (x-7224) and she will try to assist you in finding what you seek.
