Reservation sheets will be sent out to all known veterans and widows/widowers of deceased veterans. Please make your reservations promptly. Please contact Bill Rockey with any questions. HAVE YOU WATCHED THE EMPLOYEE SLIDESHOW? Each Friday of the 2017 Employee Gift Fund a new video of staff will be shown on the large screens outside the Mailroom and near the Pointe elevators. We hope that you are enjoying these extraordinary photos of our GHBC staff. Not every staff member pictured is eligible to receive one of our gift checks, but each of our nearly 500 employees does her/his best to help us thrive. We felt they all deserved to be showcased in this way. The videos are also shown on the Coming Events page of the Resident Website, but without identifying names or locales. We have resident Peg Bethany to thank for 400 hours of work over three months (while she is still gainfully employed at the Virginia Hospital Center) taking pictures of as many of our day, evening, and night staff as she could find and who agreed to be photographed. Contributions to the Fund are accepted all year, but the 2017 gift checks will be based on money collected no later than November 26. Follow the footprints in the Mailroom to deposit checks made out to Employee Gift Fund in the designated, be-flowered box in the mailroom. NOVEMBER IN THE CHAPEL: MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Special Wednesday Service in November! On Wednesday, November 22 (Thanksgiving Eve), we will have our annual Thanksgiving Service with Holy Eucharist (with music). Also, the Season of the Sundays after Pentecost ends December 2, and we will usher in Advent on Sunday, December 3. Reminder about Sunday and Wednesday Chapel Offerings and other GHBC Chapel Donations: All Chapel offerings (unless otherwise designated) are used for defraying the costs of the Chapel services (organist, flowers and related expenses). Donations to the Goodwin House Foundation, designated GHBC Chapel Fund on the GHF envelope, help pay the honorariums and other costs for organ recitals, Senior Quest speakers, and other expenses involving the spiritual life of the GHBC community. All donations via check or the special Chapel or GHF envelopes will be acknowledged at the end of the year for your taxfiling purposes. For more information about either type of contribution, see Chaplain Theresa Brion. On the information table at the Chapel entrance, you also will find a brief description of the funds and how to write out any checks to assure that they are directed as you wish. Thank you for your generous gifts that make these activities possible.

3 WEST WINDS November 6, 2017 Page 3 GHBC RESIDENT ART EXHIBITION The GHBC Resident Exhibition dates are November 13, 2017 through January 15, Residents can drop off two pieces of art on Monday, November 13 between 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Contact Art Center Coordinator Anthony Brock to set up an alternative drop-off time if necessary. POINTE PARKING REMINDER When accessing the Pointe Garage, please do not follow behind other vehicles. The blinking red light indicates that the garage door is closed. Please allow seconds for the light to turn blue. Once the light turns blue, the garage door is open and you may proceed down the ramp. If there are multiple cars waiting to enter the garage, wait until the light returns to red and then to blue. The garage door is designed to close after one vehicle passes into the garage and will close on vehicles following. In the event the garage door does not open in a timely manner or closes before you pass into the garage, please press the intercom button and identify yourself to the receptionist on the end of the line. REMINDERS FROM THE GREEN TEAM WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR EXPIRED MEDICATIONS Expired or no-longer-needed medications, when tossed in the trash or flushed down the toilet, become hazardous waste - toxic in ground water and rivers. Please bring all expired meds to the Clinic Desk for safe disposal. TWO RECYCLING REMINDERS Recycling at GHBC has evolved over the years, based on regulations from Fairfax County and the company, Republic Services, which picks up our recyclable items and our trash. The items we dispose of fall into three basic categories: recyclable items, hazardous waste, and genuine trash. Watch West Winds for more details about how and where each of these items are handled here. Can we recycle plastic bags and metal clothes hangers? Yes. Take clean plastic bags to the receptacle on the left as you enter Giant, and drop off metal clothes hangers at your dry cleaners. The What Not Shop is happy to receive your paper and plastic bags with handles.

4 WEST WINDS November 6, 2017 Page 4 Jane Coughran, with her elderly cat Callie, moved into Crossroads apartment 618 from Old Town, Alexandria, on September 20. Except for a brief time in DC during WWII, she grew up in California, where she graduated from Berkeley High School in 1956, and from Stanford University in She spent her junior year in Spain at the University of Madrid. Although she had a degree in Hispanic-American Studies, she was offered a job in Rome with an Italian bank and later worked there for an American company that was building listening sites along the Iron Curtain. In 1964, she returned to the U.S. to work for Olivetti in New York, developing marketing exhibits for their business machines and traveling around the country to set up the exhibits. When Olivetti phased out its American subsidiary, she joined Time Life Books as an historical researcher. Again her job involved much exciting travel. In 1976, the company relocated to Alexandria, and Jane came with them as a picture editor and writer of illustrated histories until Time-Life Books closed in She then worked as a contract writer and volunteered as a docent at Carlyle House. She is a member of the Armenia Sister City Committee and a volunteer with THIS for Diplomats (The Hospitality and Information Service), an organization that welcomes foreign diplomats posted in Washington, DC. Jane is quite familiar with GHBC, as her parents lived here. She is interested in our various activities, especially the Fitness Center, the pool, the game room, and internationally oriented seminars. She enjoys shooting pool and playing ping pong, although she claims to be an expert at neither. She would like to become involved in an Italian-speaking lunch group. She loves classical and Latin music, musical theater, and books. She is a big fan of Stanford football! Margaret and Wayne Kelley moved into Apartment 777 in the Pointe on October 3. They came from Holmes Beach, Florida, where they had lived for a few years. They had lived in Alexandria since Margaret grew up in Duluth, where she graduated from East High School in She went on to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, interrupting her studies there to go to Finland on a scholarship. After that program she traveled around Europe eventually settling in Paris where she worked as an au pair for a French family and studied French language at the Sorbonne for 18 months. Back in Duluth, she completed her degree in English and French and also obtained teaching credentials. She worked in New York for Oxford University Press and then went to London to teach French. Returning to New York, she taught in Mamaroneck, New York, and met Wayne. They followed Wayne s job to Atlanta and then to DC. Margaret taught for several years in DC, then worked for a trade association reporting on congressional hearings. In retirement she became a photographer and exhibited her pictures of birds in an Anna Maria Island art gallery. She has also done extensive genealogy research and has mentored young students in reading. Wayne was born in Rochester, New York and grew up in Coral Gables, Florida, where he graduated from high school in He graduated from Vanderbilt University in He was drafted near the end of the Korean War and was assigned to counter-intelligence. When he got out of the army, he went to work for the Atlanta Journal as City Desk clerk and then as Federal Court reporter. He moved to the Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle where he was City Editor and later State Capital reporter. In 1963, he was chosen for a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism at Harvard. He returned to the Atlanta Journal in 1965, where he covered state politics and the civil rights movement. The Journal made him their Washington correspondent in 1968, and the family moved to Virginia. He was hired by Congressional Quarterly Inc. in 1969, as a political reporter and worked his way up to publisher. In 1991, he was appointed Superintendent of Documents at the U.S. Government Printing Office. In retirement he enjoys tennis and reading, especially American history and mystery novels.

COMMUNITY CORNER Everyone agrees that our GHBC 30 th Anniversary celebration was a HUGE SUCCESS! Our heartfelt thanks go to all the members of the staff of Dining and Resident Services! Planning took place over a period of three months. Tiffany Proctor, Lori Simpson, Peter Moutsos, Chief Chef Allyson Lara, Robin Norman and Ghizlane Aiad spent this time discussing and testing recipes, choosing table china and cutlery, interviewing bands for the evening entertainment, and discussing setup and decorations. Once a menu was selected, work began on its presentation and it was spectacular! Mussels, scallops and shrimp were beautifully displayed and available upon entry to the dining room. Out of this world Lobster Bisque was served, followed by a salad which was an artistic masterpiece (nobody was able to figure out how they put it together). The entrees were each a thing of beauty (You could have framed! them!). As for the desserts, they were not only attractive, they were delicious! Did you ever see a Granny Smith apple so delightfully halved, hollowed out and put back together open wide to hold an assortment of fresh fruit? What an outstanding banquet our Dining staff created! Let s not forget the outstanding accomplishment of the Resident Services staff. As the 26 th of October drew near, Vy Tran and a team of staff orchestrated and handled distribution of the beautiful rose center pieces. Everyone worked on the decorations for the dining areas (including the 2 nd and 3 rd floors). Hors d oeuvres and cocktails (in which alcohol prevailed) were served in the Rotunda. Last, but certainly not least, Kudos go to Geraldine and her crew. They not only had to arrange the Rotunda for the cocktail hour, they also had to set up the Auditorium dance floor, tables, and the chairs that were in the Rotunda earlier. What a staff we have! Let them know at every opportunity how much we appreciate them! Dottie Moser, Resident
