"Leave the drvng to us " s a slogan whch has worked effectvely for Greyhound, but not, alas, for the newly naugurated WU Commuter Shuttle nsttuted ths semester. Provdng regular servce (Monday-Frday) to the DeMun and Unversty Cty areas every half-hour durng early mornngs and late afternoons (7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and 3:30 to 6 p.m., hourly servce the rest of the day, and a shorter schedule on Saturday Sunday), the lumberng buses rumble fathfully along ther prescrbed routes (see map, p. 3). Unfortunately, however, only a comparatve few of the campus communty have opted to hop aboard. These half-empty vehcles are a bg dsappontment to those who dreamed up the system, and most especally to Gary Sparks WU's fledglng Transportaton Department whch operates them va a contract wth Hayden Bus Servce of St. Lous. The department's drector, Gary Sparks, s understandably dscouraged because he needs to sell 500 passes each semester to break even fnancally. So far, he's sold only 25 at $55 for the semester. Intally, that $55 may look lke a formdable sum, but Sparks says t breaks down to $2.75 a week, or 39 cents a day, or 19'/2 cents per rde f usng the servce twce a day. Because schedules and passes were slow to arrve, Sparks let users rde free the frst two weeks of ths semester, and now he's offerng a $5 pass good for 10 rdes as an nducement for tryng the new Commuter Shuttle Servce. He's also prepared to sell the $55 passes on a pro-rated system for the rest of ths semester, whch means a substantal reducton for all those who try t. Market surveys show that 2700 members of the WU communty lve n the Unversty Cty area, and 1000 n the DeMun Area, but, so far, they have, for the most part, shunned the Commuter Shuttle Servce. Perhaps wnter weather and nflated gasolne costs, wll, n tme, help fll up the seats on these commuters. Halng one of the buses would seem much easer than parkng on the perphery of the crowded parkng lots, and then sloshng through snow drfts to arrve at class or campus offce. Accordng to Sparks, there are 3,379 parkng spaces on campus. 3 Legal Hstory s a Publshng Frst; Sheds Lght on Salem Wtchtrals Over a perod of fve years, Davd T. Kong, WU assocate professor of hstory, has spent thousands of hours bent over some 20,000 manuscrpt pages whch consttute 173 years of court proceedngs of Plymouth County, Mass. "Wth slverfsh to keep me company," he explaned recently, he has patently edted these handwrtten legal documents preserved at Plymouth and n Boston wth the ad and encouragement of Wllam E. Nelson of the Yale Unversty Law School. Ths fall, the frst seven books of ths 16-volume compendum enttled The Plymouth Court Records, have been publshed wth nne more scheduled to go to press next year. The largest legal publcaton seres n Amercan publshng hstory, ths opus magnum has been haled as "an nvaluable and welcome edtoral and publshng achevement" by Stanley Katz, professor of legal hstory at Prnceton Unversty. Smultaneously, Kong s also brngng out another book ths one a narratve on Law and Socety n Purtan Massachusetts, subttled Essex County, Publshed n assocaton wth the Amercan Socety for Legal Hstory by the Unver- Faculty Members Receve Grants Robert L. Wllams, WU professor of psychology and black studes and drector of the Mnorty Mental Health Program, wll be prncpal nvestgator of a $60,000 federal Ethnc Hertage Grant to develop readng materals for secondary school mnorty students. The Natonal Aeronautcs and Space Admnstraton (NASA) has awarded a oneyear $95,000 grant to Barna A. Szabo, WU professor of cvl engneerng and drector of the Center for Computatonal Mechancs, to nvestgate "Applcaton of Adaptve Fnte Element Analyss n Integrated Desgn and Analyss of Arcraft Structures." sty of North Carolna Press, "ths book," Kong wrtes n a perceptve preface, "examnes law and socety n Essex County, Mass., from the grantng of the frst Bay Colony charter n 1629 to the arrval n Boston of ts second charter n 1692." Although predomnantly a rural communty whch never numbered more than 2,000 adult males between the years 1672 to 1686, Essex County managed to brng an average of more than 200 cases a year to the county court durng ths 14-year perod. Kong vews ths phenomenon as proof that "the law and legal nsttutons helped to create a new paradgm for the establshment of stable communty lfe... Gradually people came to recognze that ltgaton was a useful agent of orderly and desrable socal change." As most students of early Amercana know, Essex County ncludes Salem wthn ts boundares, and Kong has a great deal to say about the wtchcraft hystera there. He beleves that he s "the frst scholar to study ths phenomenon from both a legal and anthropologcal perspectve at the same tme," and he proposes a new explanaton "for that pecular course of events." Durng ths perod of Szabo wll use a computerbased stress-analyss program to desgn mnmum-weght structures for arcraft and spacecraft. El Robns, MD, Wallace Renard Professor of Psychatry at the WU School of Medcne, has receved a $6,000 award from the Alan Blumenthal Foundaton for Mental Health to study enzyme metabolsm n the bran and how t relates to depresson and other types of psychatrc llness. The Alan Blumenthal Foundaton for Mental Health was establshed n February by Morrs and Rta Blumenthal of West Monroe, La., as a permanent and lvng memoral to ther son, Alan. Davd T. Kong hystera n Salem, "No one who behaved defantly or mprudently toward the court escaped wth hs or her own lfe." Accordng to Kong, the wtchcraft prosecutors were not smply random executoners of hatred and petty revenge. Rather, those whom they expunged "were seen as a threat to law and order n the communty." In hs examnaton of wtchcraft, Kong debunks some popular myths. No Salem wtches were burned durng ths perod. There were 150 ndvduals accused of wtchcraft; 19 others (14 women and fve men) were executed. All were hanged, and a twenteth vctm was crushed to death, an accepted procedure of Englsh courts at the tme used to extract a plea from the accused. Kong vews the vrulent outbreak of hostlty aganst wtchcraft as a "confrontaton between those who held more modern deas about socal relatonshps and others who supported medeval communal notons." As a footnote to hstory, he explaned that Nathanel Hawthorne took some lbertes wth the facts n wrtng of the nfamous "Scarlet Letter." No Salem adulteress ever wore one; rather, women accused of nfdelty were requred to stand n front of a church on Sunday as punshment for ther moral transgressons. Kong suspects that Hawthorne was, perhaps, obsessed by wtchcraft because one of hs ancestors, Wllam Hathorne (who spelled hs name wthout a "w") nterrogated those accused of wtchcraft before tral. Kong's fresh nterpretaton of the wtchcraft prosecutons of 1692 seems lkely to make hs new book of wdespread nterest. In searchng for the truth about ths subject, careful readers of hs book should come away wth the knowledge that "In a New World n whch some sector of socety would always be wtnessng the contests of change, the adaptve functons of law and the legal system would be recognzed, for they would be central to the persstent and unremttng transformatons of Early Amercan socety." Sparks spoke sadly of ths latest blow at hs offce on the lower level of South Brookngs Hall n the Copy Center headquarters' whch he also operates. Browman Elected Offcer Of Professonal Socety Davd L. Browman, WU assocate professor of anthropology, has been elected to a four-year term as secretarytreasurer of the Socety of Professonal Archaeologsts. SOPA establshes professonal standards. "The dea was to brng all of our clncal students nto one offce," sad Rousseau. Rousseau, began workng at Legal Servces when she graduated from law school and became a clnc teacher n The students handle evcton cases, utlty regulaton, landlord-tenant dsputes, car repar complants and consumer cases rangng from nsurance to sales of goods, Rousseau sad. All clnc clents are poor; most could not afford legal help wthout the clnc and ts nterns. The clnc serves clents a week, Rousseau sad. The students receve sx hours of credt for workng at the clnc, whch nvolves a mnmum of 18 hours a week plus related classwork. The students meet once a week for class and tackle a seres of smulated problems where they are vdeotaped and crtqued on ntervewng, counselng and negotatng. "We also cover professonal responsblty and ethcs, draftng legal documents, research and wrtng sklls," Rousseau sad. Advanced clnc students are assgned more complcated cases and may appear n court. Class problems do not focus on tral work snce these sklls are taught n a separate course n the law school. "On the other hand," Rousseau sad, "we wll prepare a student f a tral s nvolved n the case he s workng on." Kng McElroy Bears Have Enthusastc Fan In 79-Year-Old Lester Frank played freshman football. And, although he never graduated from the Unversty, he stll makes t to almost every game. "We have some great players here," he sad. "And the coachng s great. I enjoy every mnute of t." Frank studed mechancal engneerng at WU for two years as a young man but never completed hs degree. Instead, he started workng n clothng manufacturng. He Lester Frank Dedcaton takes many forms. For a 79-year-old St. Lousan, dedcaton s unstntng support of the WU Bears football team. Lester Frank, a young 79, s the team's offcal booster and one of ts most fathful fans. He has been rootng for the Bears snce 1917, the year he was vce presdent of the old Genell Manufacturng Co. He joned Frelch Inc., as sales manager and assstant to the presdent untl Frelch went out of busness n He retred recently after almost 60 years n the busness. "All of them have been a bunch of fne kds. I've had a lot of pleasure watchng them." Lacy Honored for Research, Contrbutons n Medcne Paul E. Lacy, MD, PhD, Edward Mallnckrodt Professor, and charman of the Department of Pathology at WU's School of Medcne, receved the 1979 Albon O. Bernsten Award from the Medcal Socety of the State of New York at ts 173rd annual conventon n September.
