The resoluton econmends the formaton of a u*sk lorce consstng of ;t least 29 per cent students "to do ndepth research concernng the gradng system. Assembly member John VVortman. who wrote the resoluton, sad there s only one student representatve on the cghtecnmember Educatonal Polcy Commttee despte gudelnes of the Unversty Task Force on Governance whch recommends 2b per cent student membershp Wortnan sad he would present the Assemblys resoluton to the Educatonal Polcy Commttee when l meets ths Thursday to consder the plusmnus gradng proposal. The ablty ol both teams to reman natonally compettve, even on the present level, wll be severely jeopardzed by the vy Presdents vote. The DP erroneously concludes that freshman elgblty would have accelerated recrutng elforts", when the facts ndcate that elgblty would reduce the tme spent on recrutng. The edtors assume that the coaches would start recrutng hgh school superstars, unaware that we are recrutng these superstars already. As more and more ol the superstars tend to turn away rom Penn or other vy schools n order to play varsty ball elsewhere, addtonal recrutng tune must be spent convncng these skeptcs as well as fndng persuadng those superstars who are wllng to consder an vy league educaton. Furthermore, n order to fll a 12man roster a coach must recrut untl he obtans an average of four varstylevel players each year. Wth freshman elgblty a team would only need an average of three players per year. The edtors fear that athletc pressures would dmnsh the academc performance of these reshmen. No data exsts to warrant ths concern. t s questonable whether the pressure on an unknown, ncomng reshman s any greater Hum that on an upcomng sophomore whose name has been all over the sports page durng hs reshman year. t s even more doubtful that a freshman playng varsty basketball wll lace any more academc pressure than a reshman playng varsty soccer n the fall semester when he has just arrved on campus Whle basketball may have more vsblty than soccer, there s no reason to beleve that the compettve drve of soccer players s any less, partcularly consderng the recent stretch of NCAA tournament appearances by the soccer team. Yet the vy Presdents approved freshman elgblty for soccer. The approval of freshman elgblty n so many other sports, ncludng fall sports, calls nto queston the theory that scholastc standards would suffer. There s no bass n fact for the contenton that repeal ol the freshman ban would brng students to Penn lor other than academc reasons. Any superstar who chooses to attend an vy League school and turns down the addtonal fnancal nducements offered around the country certanly has educaton n the front ol hs mnd. Perhaps the DP can put asde ther antpathy to Penn sports long enough to recognze the absence ol any vald objectons to reshman elgblty.
