Bulletin Volume 89 No 11 September Rotary Club of Sale Rotary District 9820 Incorporated Last Meeting: Chairman: Lyndon Webb Sergeant: Rod Exton Guest Speakers: Don and Meg MacRaild Guests and Visiting Rotarians John Cartledge and Don MacRaild, RC Sale Central. Monday September Don and Meg MacRaild International Work in Vanuatu Don and Meg MacRaild with Chairman Lyndon
President s Announcements: In the absence of President David, Chairman Lyndon advised: DG Don s official visit next week partner s night, End Polio Movie fundraiser in November Murder on the Orient Express. Further details to follow Alan advised that Parks Victoria has replaced the stolen sign. Keith advised that the Show Gates roster has been published in the bulletin. Each Club will receive $ Carmel advised that the program for Licola Camp is available for perusal by members. Sergeant: Rod Exton Sergeant Rod contemplates devious ways of extracting fines from members whilst Alan is ready with some suggestions. Rod ran a very amusing session with a particular reference to Alan with 4 widows on board Rubeena hmmmmm? During the next few months Don would welcome members willing to accompany him on his many visits around the District.
PP John Cartledge Rotary Club of Sale Central chats with Mike. Guest Speakers: Don MacRaild OAM and partner Meg MacRaild OAM, presented a comprehensive account of the amazing work they have been able to achieve for the people of Vanuatu over the past 18 years. The story commenced when Don and Meg visited Vanuatu 18 years ago and in a chance discussion with a local chief, discovered there was a great need for glasses and optometry services on the islands. After small beginnings supported by the Rotary Club of Sale Central, the project has grown into a major initiative with a large facility with 9 staff in Vanuatu not only working on prevention of blindness and supply of glasses, but also conducting diabetes testing, dental work, food security initiatives and leadership training for women with kindergartens being established. This tremendous work has been supported by Uniting Care and the Anglican Church but past funding from government resources is being withdrawn which is a major threat to the ongoing viability of the projects. Don and Meg are seeking support from many sources and chairman Lyndon indicated that our Club would give serious consideration to finding ways of supporting the cause. They have strong ties with ROMAC and a Global Grant is
being applied for in partnership with Sale Central. Chairman Lyndon thanked Don and Meg and congratulated them on the 18 years of dedication and work for the people of Vanuatu. Chairman Lyndon presents a small gift to Meg. The following are examples from the presentation by Don and Meg:
Paramount chief of the island of Tanna Elder Chief Semu Kokare In 1994 this man wrote to me asking for a pair of glasses to suit a 72 year old. More than 10,000 patients through our clinics in 2015, representing 18,000 consultations.
