1 ANNUAL REPORT June 2011 The Rotaract Club of Ottawa had another successful year! Accomplishments were made in all four tiers of the Rotary service mandate. Club Service. A strong executive team was developed through executive retreats held in August and January with the purpose to establish goals, evaluate progress, and create strategies to build a dedicated membership base. There were 62 members in all (41 UofO, 10 Carleton, 9 young professionals) of which 22 were returning and 40 were new members. Apart from biweekly general meetings, Rotaractors took part in fellowship at Sir John A s pub, welcomed visiting Rotaractors from Spain, Columbia, and Egypt, and even joined a soccer league together to stay connected during the summer months. Vocational Service. The club hosted a variety guest speakers including representatives from YOUCAN Youth Canada Association, District Governor Katie Burke, MPP Yassir Naqvi, and a Rotarian Panel. This year the club introduced short vocational speeches at each meeting to allow members to share their experiences. Many Rotaractors took part in District Conference, District Rotaract Leadership Retreat, District Assembly, and NOLA Community Service. Rotaractors and Rotarians filled 8 lanes at the 2 nd annual bowlathon, raising $1505 for Ottawa Rotary Home. Rotaractors served the community by cleaning their adopted park in Sandy Hill in the Fall and Spring, consistently volunteered at St. Joes, and took part in Tools-4-Schools and Trick-or-Eat. International Service. The club s first ever Cocktail Party and Silent Auction raised $2,179 for PolioPlus; A Taste of Brazil, coffeehouse fundraiser featuring a live jazz band, raised $1,068 for Justica Nos Trilhos; and happy dollar collection at general meetings raised $132 for Shelter Box Canada. The club also took part in a historical exchange via with a Rotaract Club in Trinidad. The Rotaract Club of Ottawa expresses their sincere gratitude for tremendous support from the Rotary Club of Ottawa and looks forward to another great year of service. Mangla Shandal President

2 ACTIVITY SUMMARY July International Fellowship: Rotaractors welcomed Pedro Valenzuela, son of a Rotary District Governor in Spain, and took him for a picnic and canoeing at Dow s Lake. August Executive Retreat: Executive members spent a weekend away to learn and understand their portfolios, reflect upon last year s achievements, discuss strengths and weakness, and set goals for the year ahead. September Recruitment campaign: Recruited students from the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, and young professional in the community. Tunnel Painting: Completed the Rotaract mural in Carleton University s famous tunnel system as a publicity initiative and recruitment tool. Fall Park Clean Up: Cleaned our adopted park through the City of Ottawa followed by a fellowship barbecue. Tools 4 Schools: Volunteered at the Ottawa Food Bank, helping to pack school supplies for elementary school children and families in need. Historical Exchange: Participated in an international exchange via with the Rotaract Club of Arima, Trinidad, to swap information about our clubs and a historical monument worth preserving in our respective countries. Guest Speakers: Co-DRRs Michelle O Doherty and Annie Chu provided an overview of Rotaract and Rotary International; Greg McClinchey spoke about alien invasive species. October Recruitment of Young Professionals: Joined the Rotary Club of Orleans at a recruitment Kiosk in Place D Orleans Shopping Centre to recruit young professionals. District Conference in Cornwall: 14 Rotaractors attended. Promoting Youth Exchange: Rotaractors that are past Rotary Youth Exchangers create and delivered a presentation to help the Rotary Club of Ottawa recruit applicants from Gloucester High School. Trick-or-Eat: Joined the Carleton University Team, dressed as superheros and went door to door collecting donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. Guest Speakers: Katie and Khadeejat from YOUCAN Youth Canada Association spoke about their conflict resolution and training programs for at-risk youth.

3 November New York Trip: Spent a weekend in New York City with Rotaractors from our club and others from the district. Paypal Donations: Updated the club website to incorporate a Paypal feature so individuals may contribute to our club fundraisers directly online even if they can t attend in person! Guest Speakers: MPP Yassir Naqvi spoke about the current economic climate in Ontario and strategies to build a stronger future; DG Katie Burke shared colourful advice and humourous stories from her personal and Rotary experiences. December Cocktail Fundraiser and Silent Auction: Raised $2,150 for PolioPlus through a cocktail party and silent auction, featuring guest speakers Linda Arsenault-Graham (successful entrepreneur and polio survivor from Cornwall) and District Governor Katie Burke. Rotaract Ugly Christmas Sweater Party: Gathered for fellowship and fun, hosted by Past President and co-drr Annie Chu. January Recruitment: Second recruitment blitz at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa as students begin their new semesters. International Fellowship: Welcomed Carolina Guevara, from Club Rotaract Valle de Atriz, Columbia, and shared stories and experiences over dinner in the ByWard Market. Post-meeting Fellowship: Casual bonding over drinks and appetizers at a nearby pub; attended SambaWay at Mercury Lounge, a fundraiser for Rio de Janeiro flood victims. Guest Speakers: Janice Barresi, Executive Director of the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa Charitable Foundation; Rotarian Charles Melchers, Canadian Border Services. February Bowlathon: Fundraised $1,505 for the Ottawa Rotary Home, while fostering fellowship between Rotarians, Rotaractors, and friends. Chilly Chilli Sunday: Joined Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Ottawa for fellowship including warm chilli indoors and skating on Dow s Lake. Guest Speaker: Leah Stuart-Sheppard, student at the University of Ottawa and past delegate to the G(irls)20 Summit.

4 March Elections: Elected executive members. District 7040 Rotaract Retreat: Hosted by co-drrs in Ottawa, this was an opportunity for Rotaract Clubs in the District to build leadership skills and exchange ideas with each other. Rotarian Panel: President Brian Barr, Julie Cugalj, and Linda Bradley, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Ottawa shared their experiences in Rotary in a fun and motivating way. April A Taste of Brazil: Coffeehouse fundraiser with a live band raised $1,068 for Justica Nos Trilhos to provide legal aid to people in rural Brazil who are victims of human rights violations and environmental degradation caused by unethical business practises and lack of political attention from local officials. Happy Dollars: Donated $132 collected from Happy Dollars at general meetings to ShelterBox to aid in disaster relief. Post-meeting Fellowship: Potluck fellowship after the last meeting in April. May Adventures in Citizenship: Assisted the Rotary Club of Ottawa to run the Canada Quiz at Adventures in Citizenship, an annual conference for young leaders across Canada. Spring Park Clean Up: Second cleaning of our adopted park, Dutchy s Hole in Sandy Hill, followed by fellowship at the Royal Oak. NOLA 2011: 3 Rotaractors attended Rotary International Convention in New Orleans, USA. Soccer: Rotaractors formed a soccer team together and registered in a soccer league to play every other Sunday evening. International Fellowship: Welcomed Philip Fawzy, Rotaractor from Egypt, and took him on a number of excursions in Ottawa during his 7 week stay. June Soccer: Continued to play soccer together on Sunday evenings as part of the soccer league.
