What will the 2018 cruise feature? Commander Cdr. Lisa Fegan, P You made conference succeed! I can t believe it is December already. My year as commander is flying by. It has been such an honor to serve as your commander. But no one can do this alone so thank you to everyone for all your support and help! The D5 Fall Educational Conference in King of Prussia was a huge success. That is due to all of the fantastic volunteers we had from the three squadrons that hosted this event, with Main Line taking the lead. Volunteers from Main Line, Delhigh and Delaware River staffed the registration table, sold and distributed conference polo shirts, organized and staffed the tourism table (giving people things to do in King of Prussia), and sold a boatload of tickets for the many items at the raffle table. Again, I really want to say thank you to everyone from our squadron who stepped up and helped out. Conference attendees had lots to choose from, including: Presentations on recent squadron activities, D5 and National programs An introduction to the America's Boating Club branding Voting by squadron representatives to provide direction to the D5 leadership Seminars on boating education and the duties of squadron and district officers A presentation of the new DML videos Continued on Page 2

Other conference photos are on pages 4, 10, 11, 12 and 16. On Friday night the Commander s Cocktail Party in C.M. and Judy Kohlenbergs suite was standing room only. Gary Gentile s talk at the Saturday lunch was probably one of the most interesting presentations I have seen at a conference. Gentile described some of his more than 200 dives on the Andrea Doria, recovering a staggering number and variety of artifacts. Main Line was in charge of the centerpieces and decorations for the Saturday evening dinner. Such a simple idea brightened the entire room. Thanks again to everyone who has worked since January to orchestrate such a successful event. In November, 10 of us gathered at Bahama Breeze Restaurant for dinner. It was a really nice way to spend the evening, featuring good conversation and good food. After dinner we all went back to our house for apple pie. Let s make this a tradition! I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy holiday season. See you at the next Ex-Com meeting and at our holiday party on Dec. 16! Click here to find us on Facebook!!2

3 Mark your calendar for next summer s cruise The wintry weather may have just begun, and people have stored their boats, but plans are under way for the 2018 MLSPS Summer Cruise. While plans are not final, the cruise will begin on Friday, July 13 and end on Sunday, July 22. It appears that the route will stay north of the Bay Bridge. Our ports of call and the dates of those visits are still being determined. Stay tuned. On Saturday evening, November 11, five squadron couples met at Bahama Breeze Restaurant for dinner. The food at Bahama Breeze is excellent, and very reasonably priced. Afterward, Cdr Lisa and Bruce Fegan invited everybody to their house for apple pie and ice cream. I think it s safe to say that everyone in attendance had a wonderful time. I base that on my observation that the plan was to meet for dinner at 5:30. However, when Susan and I left Lisa and Bruce s, it was almost 10:00, and we were one of the first couples to leave. (So much for a quick dinner in King of Prussia!) Executive Officer Lt/C John Beardsley While the stated purpose of the United States Power Squadrons is to improve boater education, this is further evidence that the social component of membership is why people stay with our squadron. One of life s joys is spending time with good friends. Squadron members gather for the Night Out with Friends at Bahama Breeze Restaurant in King of Prussia. Thank you, Cdr Lisa Fegan, for putting this event on your schedule. On the District 5 front, the Digital Media Library is moving ahead full speed. At the Fall Educational Conference, Marty and Sari Lafferty displayed some of the DML s newest training clips. They included Choosing the Correct Life Jacket, How Life Jackets Save Lives, Life Jacket Flotation and Operating a Personal Watercraft. Find them at uspsdml.org. While most people understand the value of life jackets, they may not realize that not all life jackets are created equal. You must have the correct life jacket for each person. In an emergency, having the wrong life jacket could end badly.!3

4 Educational Officer P/C Nick Montalto, SN More teachers, and a winner at D5 D/C C.M. Kohlenberg, left, with teaching aids winner James Heckman, center, as Bill McManimen looks on. We just completed a very successful District 5 Fall Educational Conference in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Bill McManimen taught the instructor recertification class to a packed room. Six Main Whether you are visiting Rock Hall to relax and enjoy the scenery or for one of the many town events, Rock Hall Landing Marina features full-fingered floating docks with 75 deep water slips available for seasonal and transient berthing. Each slip has full electric, water, free WiFi. Pumpout is available. We can accommodate transient vessels up to 130 ft. We also offer an on-site pool. Enjoy the quaint charm of Rock Hall we re the closest marina to town so it s an easy walk or bike ride away. A First Class Marina With Direct Access To The Bay 5657 South Hawthorne Avenue Rock Hall, Maryland Line members were among those who got recertified: Sue Friedrichs, Jim Heckman, Bill McManimen, Lance Parry, Russ Jones and me. Jim Heckman taught the AIS seminar, also to a packed room. (See photo on Page 16.) Further, Jim won the district s teaching aids competition for the electronic category. His teaching aid is a program run from a computer or tablet to give students a visual and interactive view of the relationships between boat heading and the relative bearing to a navigational aid or landmark, including the effects of magnetic variation. It will be submitted to the national competition. In January, we will start a MLSPS member Seamanship class, for the first time using a downloaded PDF file for the manual. We are also adding the opportunity to obtain the boating safety education card. Contact me at nickmontalto@gmail.com for further details. Our spring 2018 classes will include America s Boating Course, Piloting and a Seamanship course offered to the public. I also plan to teach several seminars.!4

5 Administrative Officer Lt/C Patricia Visich Holiday party is near, with a new twist It was a sad day recently when we cleaned out the Flyin V as we prepared her to go up on the hard for the winter months. We were lucky to get in one last sail with some great winds. It was easy to see that the season was over, as only a handful of boats were on the Chesapeake Bay. But those thoughts turned to dreams of another great sailing year in We have many exciting squadron events planned that will tide us over to next season. The annual Main Line Sail and Power Squadron Holiday Dinner Party will be held at Glenhardie Country Club, 1399 Old Eagle School Road in Wayne on Saturday, Dec. 16. The evening promises to be a fun way to gear up for the holidays. This year, instead of the Pollyanna gift exchange, we ll donate $15 per attendee to power squadrons that were affected by the hurricanes in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean. The Ex-Com voted unanimously at the October meeting to make this change for the evening. Please send in your RSVP. Cocktails begin at 6 pm, with dinner at 7. Complete details are in the flyer on Page 8. Our next dinner meeting will be Jan. 18 at Pepper s Italian Restaurant in King of Prussia. The guest speaker will be Capt. H. David Tamimie, USCG (Retired). Capt. Tamimie served more than 35 years in the United States Coast Guard and the Reserve. Plan to join us for an informative evening. Mark your calendars now, and find the flyer on Page 9. Waterways Conservation Officer Nathan Hancock from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission was the guest speaker at our Oct. 19 dinner meeting. He explained how the commission protects and enhances Pennsylvania s aquatic resources and provides fishing and boating opportunities. You can learn more about the commission at

7 Merit Marks announced for 2017 service Staffing a booth, teaching a class, recording the minutes, scrutinizing the books, figuring out a seating chart these are among the (mostly) unsung tasks our members tackle to make MLSPS, District 5 and the United States Power Squadrons better organizations. In the past year, 32 members of our squadron have been nominated for, and received Merit Marks for substantial personal effort in furthering the interest, programs and objectives of USPS, its districts and squadrons, according to USPS. A person can receive just one merit mark per year. Members with 25 or more marks are named Life Members and are exempt from paying dues. Their names appear in boldface below. Please thank all the recipients for all they do that makes such a difference. And don t forget to congratulate Meridith Barrett, our newest Life Member. P/C Gary E. 12 Hard work earns a well-done for educational conference By P/C Lance Parry Members of Main Line Sail and Power Squadron, along with those from Delaware River and Delhigh squadrons, got a special well-done from District Cdr. C.M. Kohlenberg for their efforts in producing the District 5 Fall Educational Conference. Under the direction of P/C Lance Parry, volunteers from the three squadrons oversaw all aspects of the event, from financial tracking to table decorations to registration forms and more. As D/C Kohlenberg summed it up: The Fall Conference was a flagship event as a direct result of Lance's Lancers organized and coordinated planning. A special thanks (goes) to all of the members involved in the preparation and (who) helped at the Fall Conference, (as well as) the presenters, and the attendees. Kohlenberg s comments were echoed by D5 Flag Lieutenant P/C Bob Blevins, who remarked, It was a real joy to work with you and your folks in the setup and execution of the Fall Conference. From my perspective as flag lieutenant, the facilities were really great, the hotel staff were accommodating to all of our needs, and all came off with no major hiccups. And Apryl Bernard, chairman of the D5 Meetings and Rendezvous Committee, commented, Just want to reiterate again the great job you and your committee did for the 2017 Fall Conference.
