1 SPLASH! United States Power Squadrons Port Huron Sail and Power Squadron A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE February, 2017 The Port Huron Sail and Power Squadron starts a ne year following the Change of Watch. P/C Teena Lashbrook and her many helpers did a fantastic job on this year s event. Thanks so much for everyone s participation. The COW is always fun in the middle of winter. Thanks to Past Commander Don Mortimer and Donna for all of the things they did for PHSPS over the past twelve months. Thanks to Don s significant effort we have an accurate membership list with correct phone numbers and s. This was a big job and well done, Don. Mary Twiss has continued to edit and publish the Splash! Every month. We all owe her a big thanks for her untiring efforts to make PHSPS communications happen. While we are counting the days until spring so we can launch our boats again, th squadron has a pressing problem that we need to think about we badly need new members. Many things were tried in 2016 and the new social media effort is continuing. I think every PHSPS member needs to accept the personal challenge to sign up at least one new member in We have a good thing going and we all need to spread the word about PHSPS. Our greatest asset is each other. It is the PHSPS membership that makes us what we are. Here s how to protect yourself: DON T BE FOOLED by the name displayed as the sender. Inspect the address that the message came from a long series of letters or words after.com suggests it was sent by a spammer. BE SUSPICIOUS OF LINKS. When legitimate companies offer to remedy problems or ask to update information, the typically doesn t include links. Instead the companies direct you to their website. VERIFY. If you get an with a link along with a message from a friend saying check this out call to find out if they really sent it. PARSE THE CREDIT CARD NUMBER. s pretending to be from credit card companies often cite the beginning numbers of an account. Legitimate messages more likely cite the last few numbers. Reason: Like phone numbers, many credit cards start with the same digits. 3 Splash! Page 3 Administrative Department It s hard to believe that January has already sailed by. Our unusually warm spell was deceptive. Second Sunday The Second Sunday did not happened as planned because the kitchen at the Zebra Lounge was not yet back in working order after some renovations. Cdr. Don and Donna, P/C Mike and Barb Nall, Julya Hopkins and XO Wayne Hastings met at the Zebra but dined at Chicken in the Rough. P/C Mike Bachler tried but never tracked them down. Change of Watch Winter returned just in time for the Change of Watch. About 50 members and guests gathered at the Dorsey House. Our guests included D/C Anthony Lewandowski, D/Lt Jan Hartesvelt, D/SEO Tom Smith, Mt. Clemens Power Squadron P/C Dennis Pomeroy and Janet, Port Huron Yacht Club Commodore Dale Conger and USCGA Flotilla Cdr. Joseph Kennedy. At the conclusion of the reception, Master of Ceremonies P/C Mike Nall requested that Cdr. Don Mortimer call us to order and lead us in the pledge of Allegiance for his last time. P/C Ivan Ferriby remembered our departed members Joyce Bland and Richard Hopkins. Master of Ceremonies P/C Nall introduced our Past Commanders in attendance and our special guests. Lt/C Lucrecia Ferriby led us in the blessing before dinner. After a delicious buffet dinner, Master of Ceremonies P/C Nall called Cdr. Mortimer forward for his retirement address. Cdr. Mortimer thanked and retired the 2016 Bridge Officers. P/C John Kendrick thanked Cdr. Mortimer for his service and presented his recognition mementoes. D/C Lewandowski administered the pledge to Cdr.-elect Wayne Hastings Cdr. Hastings presented the 2017 Bridge Officers and Executive Committee. D/C Lewandowski administered the pledge to the group. He then addressed the Squadron members and congratulated them on their 73 rd year Cdr. Hastings thanked the Change of Watch Committee, our guests and members, and the Dorsey House staff. He then concluded the meeting. Note that all future General Membership meetings will be held at the Squadron Headquarters. 4 v Splash! Page 4 Lt/C Richard A. Haas, AP Educational Officer At the end of December I had the opportunity to briefly meet with Mr. Gordon and his wife. He wanted to donate two gifts to the Squadron. The first gift is a Voyager Loran Navigator Unit. The second is a Davis Instrument Artificial Horizon and Sextant. The Loran unit is no longer used in navigation but we do talk about it in some of our classes. The sextant is usable and may be used by a squadron member when taking one of the Navigation courses. Eventually I would like to get a display shelf to display these items and others we have. We currently have five students signed up for the America s Boating Course scheduled to start on Thursday, 2 February. I want to thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me to be your Education Officer for another year. I look forward to serving the Squadron for another year. A final note. 5 Splash! Safety Report Page 5 Objects may seem larger than they appear... Operating in Fog From boatsafe.com When operating in fog be aware that visibility can drop drastically. When visibility is between 30 and 150 yards objects, including other boats, may appear twice as large as normal. The illusion also tends to make you think that they are approaching at a much faster rate than they actually are. Steering a straight line without a compass... Many a small recreational boat owner will find themselves steering in fog without a compass. With no compass and with no reference points because of limited visibility, even the best helmsman will tend to steer in circles. To steer a straight course, attach a light line high on the bow or from the mast and drag a drogue, cushion, or anything that can create resistance over the stern. Keep the line centered where it passes over the stern and you will steer a straight line. Actions to take in fog... If you see a fog bank approaching or fog starting to form be sure to fix your position by any and all means necessary, including electronically or by bearings. If possible, anchor and wait out the fog in an area which is too shallow for large ships to operate. Don't forget to ring your bell for 5 seconds every minute while at anchor. Post as many lookouts as you have onboard and listen intently for the sounds of other vessels.
