Welcome to fall. The temperature is getting cooler and the air more moist and it is getting darker earlier! It s education time for VSPS. I had the privilege of teaching the ABC class this week and we have a great group of folks interested in boating. If you have the chance to assist by being a proctor, contact Richard and volunteer. There are many potential members for our squadron. Make contact and welcome them to America's Boating Club. Piloting and Marine Electronics are underway and provide the information to operate safely and to handle maintenance issues and repairs. Contact Debbie if you have any questions.

2 connected at the national level which is a good thing! Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Squadron Education Officer September has brought the start of our fall lineup of classes. On September 12 the classes started. Both the ABC class and Piloting began on the same night. ABC class has a total of 21 students in it at this time. The class is being coordinated by Richard Cudworth with the able assistance of John Bath, Dave Williams and Vince Gerretz. Each week there is a different instructor stepping up to the plate to impart their wisdom about a variety of boating related subjects. We are grateful for all the assistance we are receiving in that class. Stay tuned for the classes we will be presenting in the spring. Thank you to both of these fine gentlemen. Marine Electronics has a total of 17 students and that class started on September 20. It is a full classroom! Gary Wolfe is the instructor and it looks to me like a perfect class for many of the students who expressed a desire to rewire their boats. Again I am grateful to Gary. 3 News from National R/C Kathleen Lambert, AP Chair, Communications Committee Lt/C Dan Coverdale Executive Officer There has been a change in the United States Power Squadrons public site URL from usps.org to beyondboating.org. This is an exciting new site with great graphics, videos, and easy to access information. Happy fall, everyone. California has no seasons - or so we re told. Yet the arrival of autumn is always exciting as Summer flies over the southern horizon and the air crackles with electricity, the wind no longer fat and lazy. Our own ancient encoded senses become more alert. Is that a lion lurking in those reeds? Don t break and run. They always go after the ones that run. Well, no, it s not a lion, but it probably is the modern equivalent. In yesterday s mail, there was a letter from U.S. Vessel Documentation, Inc. The letter and their website reek of phony officialdom. An offshore scam (they provide no physical address) they warn readers that their boat s COD is SET TO EXPIRE. They can help, though. Why would anyone pay a fee to a middleman to renew a boat s COD? You just send in a check for $26 or pay online. Is the scam limited to just an unnecessary fee, or once they have your credit card information, is there more to be lost? Whatever, don t break and run. They always go after the ones that run. 4 Finally, December 10 will be our Holiday Party! Once again the party will be held at Le Petit restaurant where there s sure to be good food, games and good company. Meeting Old Coast Guard Training Station Doug, my husband, has been very busy getting the hoop nets in good working order and dutifully labeling each buoy with his GO ID number, which is a new rule. Last year he caught many shorts, those that didn t quite make the length limit, so he had to throw them back. He also caught a very persistent seal that insisted on having his bait as dinner, needless to say he let that one go. There s no doubt this is an exciting time of year! The season also brings the Parade of Lights work parties. Yes, it s time to begin thinking about decorating Kiss for this year s parade. The theme will be, Wish Upon a Star. All who participate are sure to have a great time decorating and socializing; come join us! The parade is scheduled for December 16 and 17. October District 13 Fall Conference Laughlin, Nevada

Darrell O'Connell 8. Fred DeLamarter 9. Dan Cahn A quorum was present. Reports of Officers: SEO Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Debbie shared the fall line-up of classes, which starts tomorrow, Sept. 12. Three classes will be offered: 11 people are signed up for the ABC class; 10 are signed up for Piloting; and 17 are signed up for Marine Electronics. Lorna talked about the remaining events planned for 2017: Sept 30 will be the End of Summer BBQ - 14 people have signed up so far; the theme for the Parade of Lights in December is "Wish Upon a Star". The Christmas Party will be at La Petite, Ventura Harbor, on Sunday, December 10. Treasurer Lt/C Kim Morris See attached Budget Summary (4/1/2017 through7/31/2017) and Budget Summary (4/1/2017 through 8/31/2017) Kim led the discussion as to what VSPS might need in resources. The bank balance is getting comfortably large and we need to identify items the organization needs to accomplish its mission, which is primarily boating safety. Recommendations are welcome. Secretary Lt/C Chris Stine Chris provided two sets minutes for the meeting of 01 May, 2017 and 05 June 2017, which had not yet been approved due to no meetings during July and August. A motion was made, and was seconded and approved to accept the May and June minutes. Executive Officer Lt/C Dan Coverdale Dan reported on his experience as a speaker for the Gold Coast Lady Anglers, and said he very much enjoyed it. The

6 possibility exists that we may join them once a year. Commander Steve Johnston Steve reported that name tags are now available. Cal Meuser has earned a 25-year pin which will be presented to him at the End of Summer Picnic on September 30 at Ventura Yacht Club. Completed Business/Activities/Classes None reported. Future Business/Activities/Classes None reported. Adjourned at The District Council meeting will be held at Cabrillo Yacht Club in San Pedro at the end of September. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP, the meal cost is $20.00 each. Dave Williams will be borrowing the two VSPS owned sextants to share with his astronomical group, the Ventura County Astronomical Association. Dave will also promote VSPS to his group. Steve shared an he received on Sept. 7 from National HQ, stating that the Merit Marks program in now up and running again. Don and Janet Shultz will make a presentation at the October board meeting about how they have organized all the VSPS scrapbooks and historical data of the VSPS. Steve briefly discussed the requirement for the boating card or license. Ongoing Business/Activities/Classes None reported.

The Power Squadron will provide BBQ, potato salad, baked beans, dessert and drinks. We will accept any and all side dishes. Please bring your chair for comfort while you visit; the picnic tables will be used for lunch. Lunch is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for 12 years and under.
