2 Commander s Message Cdr Gary Mink P cdr@manatee-squadron.org "Boating is fun.. We'll show you how" Happy New Years, I don t know about you but I cannot believe that it is 2014 already. Where did 2013 go? It seems like it was only yesterday that I was being sworn in as your commander at Cdr Larry Beverage AP Change of Watch. Next month, February, and my C.O.W. where now XO Carl Nyman JN will be sworn in as your new Commander for 2014/2015 and your New XO, AO and New Secretary will be sworn in. The other two bridge officers, Treasurer & S.E.O will be reaffirmed. I am so looking forward to these very important dates of Feb 14, and our MSPS Change of Watch event. Friday is Valentine s Day and the start to this very important weekend. If you are planning to come and are going to get a room, please call and reserve early. To get the special room rate call the local number to the Ramada Inn Waterfront Sarasota and ask for the front desk, NOT reservations. Tell them you are with the Manatee Sail & Power Squadron or Power Squadron to get the special room rates reserved just for us. But reserve early. If you are planning a Valentine s Day dinner Friday night in the restaurant I would also call and make a reservation. Friday, the 14 th will be our relaxing day of fun lounging at the pool followed up with a Commanders Hour at our suite. Then everyone will be on their own for dinner. Saturday, 15 th will be again pool lounging and getting ready for the C.O.W. that evening. I would also like to try an answer a few questions that I have been hearing from our new members about the dress from this event. The dress code for this event in Squadron talk is Uniform G which in MSPS talk is white (Gary s article is continued on page 10) The Helm Station A publication of the Manatee Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. 3 Executive Department Lt/C Carl Nyman JN We were just returning from the Christmas Holiday party, then going to the Boat Parade an all of a sudden Santa was here, gone and now it is Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a great Christmas and had some time to spend with family and friends. The Christmas Party was great thanks to P/Lt/C Judy Martorana P and all those who assisted her and donated gifts. Lt/C Bob Kelly N did an outstanding job decorating LINDA II. They won first place! Congratulations to Bob and Linda. Your bridge and several other boaters have been discussing boating and C&R venues for next year. A meeting of those interested in this process is planned for 6 Jan 14, at the Elks at We hope to see many members there bringing some new ideas. The holidays are just over and although there is no boating event planned for January, we do have a C&R 18 Jan 14, at Yacht Sea Grill. The big upcoming event is the Change of Watch Feb 14. Hope everyone is planning to attend this prestigious annual event. Your distinguished AO, Lt/C Tom Brown S and I have met with the management at Little Harbor to begin our preparation for the D-22 C&R at Little Harbor Marina in November This was a preliminary meeting but our reservations for food and lodging are secure. Anyone interested in assisting with the preparation and presentation of this event is encouraged to express your interest to your bridge. We will be needing lots of help. The book 'Doctor on Board' by Dr. J. Hauert is a 96 page practical medical guide appropriate for all vessels and crew skill levels. Its content includes common medical emergencies that may occur while on the water including severe bleeding, shock, seizures, wounds, and fractures. The format includes an easy-lookup medical emergencies that may occur while on the water including severe bleeding, shock, seizures, wounds, and fractures. The format includes an easy-lookup Table of Contents as well as a detailed Index. The pages are presented in a crisp text and are complemented by colorful illustrations. Near the end of the book is an article on immunization, for extended cruises to the tropics, as well as details for helicopter rescue. Of particular interest is a Food Guidelines Table covering safe and risky foods. The book closes with a short article on fitness tips while on extended cruises. The publisher takes no responsibility for the use of the methods or products described in this book. With this thought in mind, Red Cross demonstrations should be attended to develop additional competence. Also, access to the real world is to have a radio on board, and for inshore waters, a cell phone. Phone numbers for medical help should be added to the inside cover of the book. Finally, to prevent the pages from sticking together from moisture, be sure to keep the book in a plastic reusable bag when not in use. By P/C Charlie Feldschau, JN Page 3

4 Administrative Department Lt/C Tom Brown S ao@manatee-squadron.org H A P P Y N E W Y E A R Yikes! It s here already. Ready or not, it has arrived. Welcome to 2014! Sit back, buckle up, and hold on as the fun filled New-Year unfolds for you. We have plans that will knock your socks off some new venues and some old traditions. Our calendar for 2014 is almost ready for final publication so you can set your schedules around the many fun events. I want to thank all of you who helped put the plans together and those who will chair the activities can be assured that you will have plenty of volunteers to help you succeed. As always, we value your ideas and comments, so please let us know how we can make sure MSPS delivers for you. We wrapped up 2013 with a fantastic Christmas Party at the Bradenton Yacht Club chaired and hosted by P/Lt/C Judy Martorana P, with surfer Dude Santa a.k.a. Cdr Gary Mink P helping. Then, Lt/C Bob Kelly N and Linda Kelly S won first place in the lighted boat parade. Fantastic December THANK YOU and Congratulations to all!! Our growth in membership continues to amaze me. Growth brings us new people with new perspectives, new energy, and fresh ideas. When we combine that with the valuable deep levels of experience and knowledge already in our membership, the results are pretty amazing. Yep! That s why you re going to love 2014 boating. With committee chairs leading the efforts, this department s volunteers administer almost all of the fun activities, including, but not limited to the following: 1. Boating Activities 2. Cruise and Rendezvous 3. Special Activities/Programs 4. Membership/DB2000/Directory 5. Member Benefits 6. Communications/meetings 7. Sunshine/Get Well Wishes 8. Photo Central 9. Fleet Captain 10. Port Captain 11. Operations Training Next month we will be listing the names and phone numbers of all the chairs and bridge Officers as the MSPS 2014 leadership is announced. Stay tuned. See the flyer for 18 Jan 14 C&R at Yacht Sea Grill with FREE BOAT SLIPS available. In addition, be careful out there use the buddy system it may save your life. Page 4

5 Education Department Lt/C Bob Kelly N seo@manatee-squadron.org LT/C Bob Kelly N Before the December membership meeting, Lt John Walsh AP presented our revised seminar covering GPS/Chart Plotter. Not only did he do an outstanding presentation, the revised material was well worth the time and inconvenience of coming early. He said there was good feedback so he will be able to alter the presentation before the public seminars. There was double the number of squadron members in attendance verses VHF/DSC or Marine Radar. Thank you for your help. At 07Jan 14 membership meeting, P/C King Barnard SN will present the "How to use a Chart" seminar. This is the last seminar before we present all four to the public at large on 15 Jan14 at the Bradenton Central Library. Starting at 0930 and ending at There is no cost to attendees. The time table follows 0930 How to use a Chart 1130 GPS/Chart Plotter 1330 Marine Radar 1530 VHF/DSC All USPS members and associates are invited as well. Lt Marty Spenser P and Lt Bill Spenser JN organized and conducted a very successful ABC 3 class on 30 Nov 13. We sadly note that Marty is stepping down from her chairperson position after three years of remarkable and outstanding leadership. You have to give her credit for directing all those type" A" instructors. In early January 14 the instructors will be meeting to decide what electives and grade courses will be offered in There are three courses starting immediately: Navigation 06 Jan 14 P/LTC Mike Stewart SN Electronics 07 Jan 14 P/C Charlie Brunner SN Weather 08 Jan 14 P/C Richard Harrison SN It's not too late, call the instructor and he will work you in. Answer to December's question of the month: What is sucking bottom? As is was explained to me by a tug/work boat captain: There is a very deep layer of loose silt that is picked up by your props, causing the viscosity of water to thicken to the point your boat will not respond normally, especially when turning. January's Question of the month: When steering a straight course, another vessel is on a crossing path to yours and this vessel stays aligned with some feature on your boat. What is going to happen if both vessels maintain their courses? Page 5

We are working on a new membership book that will explain some of our uniforms for the events. The big one is Uniform A that is our full dress uniform or Black Tie event. I will be very busy going from one look to another this month as I am planning on going to quite a few of our neighboring squadrons Change of Watches to show our support. I will be looking forward to seeing all of you at our 2014 January meeting, as you will be hearing who our next AO will be there. As well, the presentation of our 2014 budget will be given. Plus, not to forget all the great people that will be there to share the night with. Hollywood has their night of stars and we have our monthly meetings. Which is better? Do I really have to ask?
