1 Scuttlebutt December 2016 NORTH STRAND SAIL & POWER SQUADRON Chartered November 30, 2000 Volume XVII, No. 12 Editor: Barbara Coates at District 26, United States Power Squadrons Web page: FROM THE COMMANDER S HELM Welcome to a new North Strand Sail & Power Squadron Watch Year! I want to thank P/C Jack McKinnon, JN, his entire Bridge, and all the volunteers for an outstanding year of service. Our Change of Watch was great, with a record turnout over half our squadron attended. Thanks go to D/26 Secretary Harry Gindhart and his lovely wife Marsha for helping to make it such a memorable meeting. And, I also want to thank the COW committee for all their hard work and preparations for this special event. Congratulations also go out to all our award recipients for their contributions and dedication to our squadron all truly well deserved. I am so proud and humbled to be able to serve you all as our new Squadron Commander. Congratulations to our entire new Bridge and all our committees who have signed up to serve our squadron for the upcoming year. I am also excited that we have several new members who have volunteered to serve in various positions this upcoming year. Together, I commit to our members that we will provide a wide variety of activities both on the water and off that will be fun, rewarding and exciting for all. We have a full schedule of activities for December, including our Christmas party, Christmas parade, cookie exchange, ladies luncheon and Christmas tree lighting at North Strand Parks and Recreation. See our inserts and calendar in this newsletter for details. Hope you can join in on these fun events. Our various committees are also meeting early to plan all of our upcoming year s events. Our Cruise Director Ed is busy planning our fun cruises for the year, as well. I have it from a reliable source that the weather this upcoming year will cooperate. Starting this year, we are making some changes to our newsletter that hopefully will make it more efficient and effective in communicating all of our activities to our membership. We will be publishing the Scuttlebutt quarterly and a new publication Waypoints will be sent out in the off months. Between these two publications, you will still get all our events and important information communicated to you monthly, supplemented by blasts (always as needed). Our first issue of Waypoints will come your way on 1 January I am very excited about the upcoming year and hope to see you all at our upcoming December events. In closing, I hope you all have a great Holiday season with family and friends, and I wish all of you and your families a Merry and Peaceful Christmas. Catch the Spirit... Pass it On! Commander George Theriault, AP

3 The XO s Slip We are beginning a brand new year. Doesn t that sound exciting! I like brand new things. The Change of Watch was a Great Evening. The food was wonderful, and the decorations were fantastic. I like the new venue it was a Classy Event! We even turned out well in our best dress attire. Thanks to all the hard work that went into that COW from invitations, to money being collected, food choices, table setups, programs and decorations. It takes a lot of hard work to make this happen. I enjoyed being your Administrative Officer and look forward to the role of Executive Officer. We do have some things coming up soon. We have the boat decorating party for the Christmas Parade at the Faris home on 3 December at 1PM, and the parade starting at 5:30 PM. 4 From The AO s Wheelhouse Well, a new Watch Year has begun, and, as a new member of the Bridge, I find I have many things to learn. But first, I want to thank Bonnie Kanoy for the hard work she put in to set the committees and the personnel for this coming year. She has done everything possible to make my transition process to the Bridge easy. Secondly, I want to thank Becky Sabo and the Social Committee for making the Change of Watch such a successful event, with a record turnout at a beautiful venue. I look forward to working with our committees to enhance the membership s squadron experience and impact our involvement in the community. In keeping with that, I encourage you to come forward with any ideas, thoughts, charities, or special interests that you may have that can translate into our squadron goals. The strength of our squadron is our membership, the sense of fellowship and community that is evident in everything we do together. As a newer member, I fully understand the fog of confusion in joining the organization. I assure you the first step in clearing that fog is to volunteer. By getting involved, you get to meet members in small groups and have fun. How do you get involved? Here are some of our upcoming events for December. 1 Dec 2016: Game Night at the Faris Home 3 Dec 2016: Christmas Parade Boat Decorating at the Faris Home 8 Dec 2016: Ladies Christmas Luncheon at Clark s Restaurant 10 Dec 2016: Christmas Party at Little River Elks Lodge This will be another fun event. 7 Cruise News Although it s a bit cool outside right now and will be for a few months to come, before you know it spring will be upon us, and the spark to go boating will be back once again. This past year of 2016 was a good year for our squadron boaters, having no reported mishaps or accidents. That made it a very good season to me. We will probably be kicking off our next season of cruises in May of 2017, so until then, have a very Merry Christmas and wonderful Happy New Year to you all!! Hope to see you soon, Notes From The Treasurer Cruise Director Ed It's that time of year again, when one Watch Year is ending and another beginning. It's been a pleasure being your Treasurer this past year; working along with everyone and enjoying all that NSSPS entails. As a squadron, we purchased a large screen TV as an aid for education, invested in a reusable banner to advertise ABC classes, and transferred funds from the checking account to a money market account. The following reflects activity from 1 Nov to 24 Nov 2016 (the day I write this article): Beginning Balance (1 Nov 2016) $ Income Expenses ( ) Ending Balance (24 Nov 2016) $ Value of Money Market Account $ Thanks to the efforts of many, the Treasury is in very good shape and we're ending on a very good note. George and I wish you and your families a very Happy Holiday Season. 8 December Safety Message When Your Draft Exceeds We ve all heard the saying When the draft of your vessel exceeds the depth of the water, you are surely aground. It s a cute saying, until it happens to you. At best, you know you re in the shallows and are traveling at idle speed, in which case, the grounding is likely a mere inconvenience. At worse, it can be unexpected while traveling at cruising speed and can then be dangerous or even life threatening. As we all know, the Intracoastal Waterway has several shoaling areas. Some of these are quite dynamic, changing location or depth with each passing storm or simply with the passing of time. What can we do to prepare for and avoid these constantly changing areas? There are two excellent sources that immediately come to mind. They are the Corps of Engineers Hydrographic Survey (CEHS) charts and the Active Captain website. The CEHS charts show a color representation of the depth and location of the channel within the daymarks (see below). As many of you are probably aware, daymarks do not always indicate safe passage. Due to shoaling over time, I ve witnessed daymarks in extremely shallow water. The CEHS charts will indicate these areas of concern. The downside of the CEHS chart is, like any hard copy chart including chart plotters, they are dated. They are updated every few years, but, of course, a lot of new shoaling can take place over a couple of years. They can be located online at A more current source of these hazardous areas can be found on the Active Captain website, located at It is a free website, containing loads of maritime information, but they do require you to establish a user account with them. It includes, amongst many features, a nautical chart of just about any water in the world, including our own AICW. This is a community maintained website, meaning that boaters using the AICW can add or edit hazards to the chart as soon as they appear. With millions of boaters world-wide making updates in real time to these charts, this means you have the latest available information at your fingertips. Last year, I brought my boat PAX down to Little River from Catawba Island in western Lake Erie. When I entered the AICW, I carefully examined the CEHS charts and referred to the Active Captain website, noting all the hazards along the way. I can proudly say I navigated the entire AICW from Norfolk to Little River without incident. I did witness a few vessels that were not so fortunate. They relied entirely on the daymarks to keep them out of harm s way. It was a mistake on their part. I hope this article will help you be better prepared when you navigate the AICW and help you keep the depth of the water exceeding the draft of your vessel. Happy and safe boating! P/C Doug Thomas, SN This is an example of a CEHS chart. Note the location of R18 in the bottom segment. Clearly located in unsafe water. In this case, you would favor the green side of the channel at this bend. 8

9 A Tribute To Our North Strand Squadron Family By: Joanne Jenkins When we join the United States Power Squadrons, we pledge to render assistance whenever possible. For the members of North Strand Sail & Power Squadron, this doesn t just mean on the water it means under water and on land as well. With the recent Hurricane Matthew that hit the Southeast pretty hard, Past Commander Bob Candiano and his wife Jane were also hit hard. Their home backs up to the Waccamaw River and is not in an official flood zone, but flood it sure did a week after Hurricane Matthew blew through. Inland rivers, making their way to the ocean all over the Southeast were swollen for days and exceeded flood height in many towns across the area, causing extreme flooding. So, on a Saturday two weeks after the hurricane, more than 30 squadron members plus some family and others came together to help Bob and Jane by tearing out sodden carpets, packing and moving everything out of their home and removing ruined drywall and insulation. Coffee and donuts in the morning and lunch in the afternoon were generously provided by Past Commander Marc Theriault, and lots of hands were there for Bob and Jane. In addition, many squadron members donated money, as well their time, and $866 was raised to help them purchase materials to rebuild their home. Our boating friends are really special, and it sure feels good to pull together for something like this. It was work, for sure, but it was rewarding work. As our motto says, Come for the education, STAY FOR THE FRIENDS. Friends don t get any better than this gang. 13 USPS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT As you know, USPS has for the past several years, experienced a declining membership. In some squadrons, filling leadership positions has been a problem. While the organization remains healthy, and membership numbers have improved recently, there are ways that we members can help our organization. Our national organization and our districts have been working on ideas to solve some of our problems, the health of USPS rests in many ways with our squadrons. If we are to have our organization grow and prosper, we must have our squadrons functioning effectively and efficiently. One way of so doing is to enhance our squadron leadership. We need our leaders to be well trained in leading a volunteer organization. The USPS Leadership Development Committee has developed a series of three seminars to help our members develop and enhance their leadership qualities. We have scheduled the first two seminars in this series (LD101 and LD102) on 5 and 6 January 2017 in Raleigh, NC. We have scheduled the third seminar in Orlando, FL at the USPS Annual Meeting on 24 February Many of you will say that I have had this type of training in my professional life and don t need any more. However, there is a big difference in leading people in a work environment and leading people in a volunteer organization. These seminars focus on leading our volunteers in our squadrons. Since we in District 26 are getting into our change of watch times, these seminars will help our new and our advancing bridge officers in their years as our squadron leaders. But, these seminars are not only for our bridge officers, they are very helpful to all of our squadron leaders and potential leaders. We welcome you all to attend. To register, go to the Leadership Development Committee webpage on the USPS website. We are still taking registrations, and will continue to take registrations for the next few weeks, even though the webpage says there is a cut-off date of 1 November We do have enough registrants to be able to hold the seminars, but we have room for more. The registration fee for each seminar is $ After successful completion of each seminar, District 26 will reimburse the members of District 26 squadrons the registration fee. Hotel information is also on the LDCom webpage. Your expenses should also be tax deductible. For additional information or questions, please contact Stf/C Harold O Briant, JN at or hobriant@juno.com; or P/R/C Ed Kridler, SN at or ekridler@bellsouth.net. We hope to see many of you in Raleigh.
