Training is delivered to more than 25,000 regional, national and international students annually. Across 17 campuses from the Whitsundays to Thursday Island and out to Mount Isa, students can choose from more than 380 accredited programs, from Advanced Diplomas through to Certificate courses. Short courses are regularly scheduled throughout the year at all campuses. Training is delivered across a diverse range of industries, from business to health and trades to tourism. More than 3,500 apprentices and trainees are in training at any one time at our campuses. TAFE Queensland North has established strong partnerships with schools, businesses, industries, universities and community organisations. Pre-vocational and Certificate II courses provide basic level training to show employers you are ready to work and can undertake further education or begin an apprenticeship. 5 How do I enrol? The course/s you choose will generally determine how you enrol at TAFE. When the paperwork is complete, your enrolment can be finalised by post, telephone, in person, fax or . Phone your local TAFE Queensland North Customer Service Centre or visit one of our campuses nearest you to confirm the enrolment process. Enrolment conditions Access to all classes is subject to: sufficient enrolments in the class pre-requisites and other entry requirements being met course fees being finalised. Enrolment fees All fees are due and payable at the time of enrolment. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express). CERTIFICATE 3 GUARANTEE The Certificate 3 Guarantee gives eligible Queenslanders access to a government subsidised training place, up to, and including their first post-school Certificate III level qualification in priority training areas. How does Certificate 3 Guarantee work? The Certificate 3 Guarantee subsidy for a course is paid to TAFE to reduce the cost of the Certificate III course to the student. The amount of subsidy provided by the Certificate 3 Guarantee will vary depending on the demand for skilled workers in a particular industry and the needs of the student. Am I eligible? To be eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee a student must: Not hold or be already undertaking a Certificate III or higher level qualification (Certificate III qualifications completed at school are not counted) Be 15 years of age or older Have finished secondary school or left school Be a Queensland resident an Australian Citizen or permanent resident living in Queensland, or a New Zealand citizen permanently residing in Queensland. 6 VET FEE-HELP Study now. Pay later! VET (Vocational Education & Training) FEE-HELP is an Australian Government interest free loan scheme that provides financial assistance to students. Eligible, full-fee paying students who enrol in an approved Certificate IV, Diploma or higher level course can apply for VET FEE-HELP to assist with the cost of TAFE tuition fees. How does VET FEE-HELP work? VET FEE-HELP provides an interest free loan from the Federal Government to help eligible students pay for all or part of their tuition fees when studying an approved VET program at Certificate IV, Diploma level or higher A loan fee of 20 per cent applies to all debts TAFE receives the full loan amount directly from the Government. You repay the loan through the Australian Taxation Office once you earn a wage equal or higher than the repayment threshold RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Got the skills and need the paper to prove it? Turn your experience into a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). If you have never formally studied or trained in a particular area, RPL could provide you with a qualification fast. 7 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies TAFE Queensland North is the only training facility in Queensland to have a faculty dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. Over 20% of students enrolled at TAFE are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Students can choose to study a variety of industries including: Cultural Arts, Education, Conservation & Land Management, Business, Management, Financial Services, Primary Health Care, Aged Care, Sport & Recreation and Fitness. Students can choose to study: on campus, in communities and in the workplace. Even if you don t live near one of our campuses you can still enrol in our courses by accessing Away from Base (AFB) financial assistance which may help pay for your travel and accommodation to undertake an AFB course. (See page 22). All students have access to a team of dedicated Indigenous Support Officers to assist them with their training needs. Great Barrier Reef International Marine College All your maritime training needs in one location. One of the most comprehensively equipped training centres in the southern hemisphere, Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) comprises a Full Mission Bridge Simulator and Navigation Labs, Fire Fighting and Damage Control Emergency Response Training Simulator and a sea survival training immersion pool, all of which are located on the one campus. In addition, our two training vessels provide innovative hands on training, taking the classroom to sea. Training courses on offer at GBRIMC lead to internationally recognised Certificates required to service on and operate all types of vessels from up to 35m in length to the largest ships afloat at over 400m in length. 8 APPRENTICESHIPS & TRAINEESHIPS Do you want to study and work in your industry at the same time? Apprenticeships and Traineeships are jobs that combine work, structured training and formal assessment, which lead to a qualification. As an apprentice or trainee you are contracted to an employer for a nominal period of time, enabling you to successfully gain competence in a trade (apprenticeship) or a vocational area (traineeship). Your employer will schedule time during work hours for you to attend TAFE. Here are four easy steps to become an apprentice or trainee 1 Choose the right apprenticeship or traineeship Think about what you enjoy doing and what your interests are. Speak to your family, friends or your school career counsellor or guidance officer about the job you are interested in. Youth.gov.au 2 Find an employer You can be employed directly by a business. The business will pay your wages and train you with the support of a training organisation. To find an employer:. contact businesses either in person or through a letter. apply for jobs advertised in the newspaper. search for jobs on the internet on sites such as: jobsearch.gov.au, seek.com.au and careerone.com.au. using your personal networks talk to family and friends to see if they know anyone who could employ you as an apprentice or trainee.. contact a Job Services Australia provider these organisations can provide you with a list of job vacancies in your area. Call or visit deewr.gov.au/employment You can be employed by a group training organisation who will place you with different businesses to gain on-the-job experience, pay your wage and organise your training. Choose a training organisation: You and your employer will choose a training organisation (TAFE) who will work with you throughout the apprenticeship or traineeship.
