2 About the AVA The AVA is the peak national body representing the Australian veterinary profession, delivering a range of services and benefits to over 9,000 members. Our members are veterinarians in practice, industry, government and academia. For nearly 100 years, we ve represented vets in every corner of Australia and we always will. As Australia s only collective voice for vets, we are experienced advocates and active leaders on all issues of animal health and welfare. About the East Coast Roadshow The AVA s East Coast Roadshow will run throughout the month of March and will be held in Victoria, Queensland NSW and ACT over three separate weekends and one evening. The NSW Conference will be held on the weekend of March 2017 at the Newcastle Exhibition & Convention Centre (NEX), 309 King Street, Newcastle, NSW. The theme is Emergency Medicine and Critical Care with a focus on small animal medicine. The program, which also features a dedicated stream for nurses, will cover practical approaches to emergency cases and the management of animals requiring ongoing intensive care. Delegates will also gather for a fun-filled evening on Saturday for the gala dinner.
3 The destination Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with a rich maritime history. It s the state s second-biggest city, just two hours drive north of Sydney. Newcastle is a harbour city with amazing surf beaches linked by the spectacular Bathers Way coastal walk and a delight to explore. 4 AVA NSW President welcome Dr Geoff Scarlett New South Wales Division President AVA NSW Division has been running Regional Conferences for 10 years with great success and the next conference in Newcastle is shaping up to be another excellent learning and social experience. The theme of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care offers a great opportunity for all those in veterinary practice to brush up on their skills in managing the ever-present emergency cases. The program will be based on practical, hands-on treatment of these cases and management of animals requiring ongoing intensive care. Our keynote speaker, Dr Erica Reineke, from University of Pennsylvania is highly credentialed in veterinary emergency services and will be supported by several local speakers. Topics to be covered include: emergency approach to seizures unstable diabetic patients zoonoses backyard dangers. There will also be a thought-provoking sessions on mental health with Dr Cathy Warburton. There will be stream for nurses which is always popular and a discount for practices that have both member vets and nurses attending. Newcastle has plenty to offer those who wish to bring their families and take a break for the weekend. Since the closing of the steelworks the city has turned into a vibrant cultural and social destination. The Honeysuckle area features many restaurants and coffee shops and there is the option to relax at a choice of beaches and seaside pools. Nearby at Spears Point there is also an award winning, internationally famous all-access children s playground. On Saturday evening the conference dinner will provide a great opportunity to sample the local fare and famous Hunter Valley wines while you enjoy the collegiality of veterinary friends and workmates. 5 Conference keynote speaker Dr Erica Reineke VMD, DACVECC Erica graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School in She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery followed by a residency in emergency and critical care medicine, both at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2007, she became a diplomate in emergency and critical care medicine and joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania where she is currently an Assistant Professor of emergency and critical care medicine. Erica has published on topics related to emergency and critical care including glucose monitoring and glycaemic control, triage, trauma and toxicosis. Her research interests include minimally invasive diagnostic testing, urethral obstruction, and small animal toxicoses. Mental health speaker Dr Cathy Warburton BSc BVMS MACVSc MVS TAA Dip Pos Psych and Well-being Veterinary Wellness Consultant and Coach Cathy is the principal trainer and coach at Make Headway. Cathy graduated from Murdoch University in 1989 as a veterinarian and worked as a clinician, trainer and manager in private, university and corporate practices for 25 years. Cathy left practice in 2014 and spent two years learning about positive psychology, well-being and coaching. Cathy and her husband have three boys aged 13, 16 and 19 years, a loopy German Short-Haired Pointer named Jelly and four chickens. Cathy is committed to doing the right thing by others, lifelong learning, leading a balanced, sustainable life and finding joy in the little things.
6 Local speakers Dr David Tabrett BVSc MACVSc (small animal medicine, veterinary emergency and critical care) David graduated from the University of Queensland in 1989 and relocated to the Hunter Valley the following year where he has worked in several practices in the region including Cessnock, Raymond Terrace, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. David became a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal medicine before he shifted careers, moving into emergency practice, first in Sydney in 2003 and then he opened Newcastle Animal Emergency Centre in May Further examinations in veterinary emergency and critical care followed in Dr Natsuko Kitamura BVSc(Hons) MANZCVSc (emergency and critical care) Natsuko graduated from the University of Sydney in 2003, then travelled south to Queanbeyan where she commenced her first and last mixed practice job. After moving back to Sydney, Natsuko worked in Camden for two years, then moved to Newcastle in early 2006 where she briefly worked for the RSPCA before joining Newcastle Animal Emergency Centre in mid Natsuko enjoys both medicine and surgery. Her biggest ex lap was on a pet goat named Mr Doolittle in the middle of the night at Newcastle Animal Emergency Centre. He barely fit on the surgery table, but he recovered well. Eliska Jerabek Head nurse (clinical) In 2000, Eliska was a volunteer at the RSPCA Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle. While completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, she was offered full time employment at the RSPCA. After three years she headed to Europe where she worked at a busy general practice before returning to the Newcastle RSPCA for another four years. Eliska then worked at a Sydney North Shore Specialist Centre before moving to Canberra where her love of emergency medicine started and where she worked as head nurse. After working at Newcastle Animal Emergency Centre for two years, she became Head of Emergency Nursing. She often speaks at local veterinary nursing seminars. Tracy Bowring Vet nurse Tracy started in the vveterinary industry in 1991 at Kalgoorlie, WA. She moved to Perth to obtain her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, then worked for a large practice as a Veterinary Nurse overseeing four branch clinics as an Aassistant Mmanager and Nnurse educator. In 1998 along with her daughter, Tracy moved to Newcastle and worked in two local practices before joining the Newcastle Animal Emergency Centre AREC in May In 2011, Tracy began teaching vveterinary Nnursing and Aanimal Ccare at TAFE NSW. She lives with her daughter, two Golden Retrievers, Levi and Wags and a cat named Riguel. Tracy enjoys the challenges of emergency and critical care and has a passion for educating future nurses. In her spare time, Tracy competes in Softball Masters tournaments and enjoys travelling and family time. Peter Massey Program manager health protection, clinical nurse consultant Hunter New England Population Health Peter is a clinical nurse consultant and program manager in health protection with Hunter New England Population Health. He has worked in public health in rural NSW for about 30 years and has expertise in immunisation, communicable disease control, zoonoses, public health emergencies and Aboriginal health. Peter brings a strong rural and equity focus to all aspects of public health. In addition, he has worked to build the research capacity of others in rural areas across Australia, and several Pacific countries. His work in TB has involved supporting grass roots developments and national programs in Solomon Islands, Fiji and PNG.
