Information that was once only available in study subjects is now becoming readily available. Drug interactions and end organ failure may also affect pharmacokinetics of individual opioids in a similar manner. Genetic testing reports can be used by the hospice staff to improve end-of-life pain and symptom management. This training will allow participants to self-report increased knowledge of opioid effects in the body, metabolism and excretion; self-report an increased understanding of pharmacogenetics and polymorphisms that may impact pain management; become aware of drug interactions and genetic predispositions involved with specific pain medications; and choose improved medication therapy choices for individual patients. A2: Advance Directive Completion in 2017: Are Nebraskans Avoiding the Inevitable? A Preliminary Review of the NHPCA End-of-Life Survey (Repeated as Session C2) Julie Masters, PhD, Professor and Chair, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska Lindsey Wylie, JD, PhD, Research Associate, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska Sarah Hubner, BA, BS, Graduate Assistant, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska The purpose of this session is to provide insight into the decision-making behaviors of Nebraskans regarding their end-of-life wishes and whether these decisions continue to be an integrated process since first examining the data in the last NHPCA Nebraska Endof-Life Survey Report. This training will allow participants to identify the hot regulatory issues in the hospice industry and how they affect hospice providers and the hospice industry as a whole, review the current quality reporting requirements and issues in the hospice industry, and discuss how to reduce compliance risk. A4: Good Company = A Good Company (Your Hospice as a Bridge of Hope) Steve Sewell, Chaplain, CEO, Speaker, Trainer, Author, Encouraging Hope and Steven Enterprises, St. Joseph, Missouri Health care organizations are known not only for their programs and care but for their people associated with caring programs. In this session, you will learn a failproof model of connecting with your community and ways to launch new relationships. 12 tuesday march 20 schedule details B3: Death Prep Extravaganza Laura Pritchett, Author, Fort Collins, Colorado Based on Laura Pritchett s book, Making Friends with Death: A Field Guide for Your Impending Last Breath (To Be Read, Ideally, Before It s Imminent!), this session is a practical workbook-type session designed to get you and your patients thinking about how best to live life, contemplate death, and help others know and respect our wishes. This session is anything but morbid rather, it offers spunky and fresh ideas about clarifying one s life, using death as your advisor so as not to dilute or distract your time away, creating a good holding environment for yourself or others, and making friends with the inevitable. This training will allow participants to identify how to best live life, contemplate death, and help others know and respect their wishes; review fresh ideas about clarifying one s life, using death as your advisor; and create a good environment and make friends while facing the inevitable. B4: Finding Hope: Helping Kids Find Their Smile During Grief and Loss Steve Sewell, Chaplain, CEO, Speaker, Trainer, Author, Encouraging Hope and Steven Enterprises, St. Joseph, Missouri Fears, misconceptions, doubts and other barriers to healthy communication play a large part in what we do as end-of-life professionals. Working with children and teenagers who are grieving through the loss of their loved one or as a patient can be even more challenging. In this seminar, Steve will provide encouraging hope to you, in whatever discipline you serve in, to support, provide empathy, and create a high, open relationship with these precious young people. This training will allow participants to reflect on what we know about kids and experiencing grief and loss, differentiate age-level-appropriate grief support for a variety of end-of-life clinicians, and observe general tips of working with kids and teens as it relates to grief and loss. 3:15 p.m. - 3:30 p.m....break 3:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.... Announcements/Door Prizes 3:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m....general Session III Making Friends with Death? Yes, Indeed Laura Pritchett, Author, Fort Collins, Colorado Based on Laura Pritchett s new book, Making Friends with Death: A Field Guide for Your Impending Last Breath (To Be Read, Ideally, Before It s Imminent!), this session is designed to get participants thinking about making peace with the inevitable. Pritchett will broach the sacred and the scary with warmth, humor, and a few wisdoms gleaned from years of research into what a good death looks like. The goal? Participants will leave thinking of death as more of a friend than a spooky stranger which helps not only each of us, but our loved ones as well. And since we can use death as our advisor, it might offer a few nuggets on living our best and brightest life too. There will be a few laughs along the way because it s not all grim when it comes to the grim reaper. Objective: This training will allow participants to self-report that they left the session thinking of death as more of a friend than a spooky stranger which helps not only each of us, but our loved ones as well (not to mention our culture and planet). 5:00 p.m....adjourn/certificates 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m....reception 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m....banquet Special Guest, Edo Banach, JD, President and CEO, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Thanks to support by Hospice House, anonymous donors, and Heath and Karma Boddy Nebraska Health Care Association is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This session, based on Tom s latest book, captures the substance of that earlier work and extends and embeds it in descriptions and interpretations of experiences of learning how to live from birth to death, learning to carry sorrow, engaging with life s mysteries, and soulful and spiritual dimensions of loss and grief. This training will allow participants to self-report an understanding of how we learn to live in the world from birth until death, self-report an understanding of grief reactions, and self-report an understanding of the grieving response. 10:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m....break 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.... C2: Advance Directive Completion in 2017: Are Nebraskans Avoiding the Inevitable? A Preliminary Review of the NHPCA End-of-Life Survey (Repeat of Session A2) Julie Masters, PhD, Professor and Chair, University of Nebraska Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska Lindsey Wylie, JD, PhD, Research Associate, University of Nebraska Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska Sarah Hubner, BA, BS, Graduate Assistant, University of Nebraska Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska The purpose of this session is to provide insight into the decision-making behaviors of Nebraskans regarding their end-of-life wishes and whether these decisions continue to be an integrated process since first examining the data in the last NHPCA Nebraska Endof-Life Survey Report. C3: Sound Care for Yourself and Those You Serve Tami Briggs, MBA, Certified Harp Practitioner, Therapeutic Harpist, Musical Reflections, Eden Prairie, Minnesota Your sound care is vital to your overall well-being. In this session, you will feel music s powerful healing role, with live harp music, and explore a unique perspective on self-care in relation to the four areas of well-being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. As you move from busyness to calm and deep relaxation, your spirit will be nurtured with time for reflection and rejuvenation. (continued on next page) 11

14 wednesday march 21 schedule details This training will allow participants to describe sound care and discuss how to mindfully create a sound cloud for themselves and those they serve; discuss the four areas of well-being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, and how each impacts participants overall self-care; and learn creative ideas on how the harp and therapeutic music can support your self-care journey. C4: How Dying is Under Siege and What Can Be Done Helen Chapple, PhD, RN, MA, MSN, CT, Associate Professor, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska Biomedical advances now rescue many from sudden death, enabling survivors to maintain chronic conditions over time. As decline from illness and general frailty gradually assert themselves in these people, death can often be foreseen. Dying has therefore become something separable from death, garnering attention on its own. The development of dying as a thing and its impact on the culture makes its threatened disappearance notable. Expected remedies from hospice and advance care planning are not reliable. This session traces the development of dying and what now puts it in jeopardy. Possible interventions will be explored. Objective: This training will allow participants to name one factor in the development of dying as a particular focus, describe how medical advances have made dying more difficult to identify, and explain why hospice cannot protect dying generally. (This session meets the requirements for 1.25 hours of ethics continuing education for certified social workers.) 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m...lunch 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.... Concurrent Sessions [D1-D4] D1: Lessons Learned: What We Can Learn From 20-Plus Years in Chaplaincy Steve Sewell, Chaplain, CEO, Speaker, Trainer, Author, Encouraging Hope and Steven Enterprises, St. Joseph, Missouri The role of the spiritual counselor and/or chaplain has evolved from a lot of different meanings in the past to several different definitions for current-day practice. Yet in some cases, the chaplain role is being diminished, underserved and underappreciated. This session will explore the evolution of chaplaincy, the fundamental points of interests and best practiced skills, and how to keep the call to serve patients and their families at the foremost interest of ourselves and our agencies. This training will allow participants to identify the evolution of chaplaincy, explore lessons learned from veteran chaplains, and share their best valued lessons and points of interests in chaplaincy. D2: The Need for Wisdom in Thanatology Tom Attig, PhD, Professor of Philosophy Emeritus, Bowling Green State University, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Wisdom is a worthy and necessary companion to science in the body of knowledge that is thanatology. Science seeks objective truths about reality. Wisdom seeks subjective truths about values and meanings one can live by. Wisdom enables us to recognize the limits of our knowing and to reflect carefully about challenges in living meaningfully, especially in shadows of uncertainty, e.g., when facing mortality, dying or grieving, or when caring for others who are doing so. The body of wisdom in thanatology is already rich and diverse and among our most valuable treasures. This training will allow participants to define the purposes of wisdom and science in thanatology, identify and discuss several places where wisdom is vitally important personally and professionally in living mortal lives and caregiving, and identify a variety of sources of invaluable wisdom for contending with mortality, dying and bereavement and for respectful caregiving. D3: Integrative Care in Pediatric Palliative Care Sheila Mee, DMin, CHTP/I, Healing Touch Practitioner, Hand in Hand/Palliative Care, Children s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska This session will provide an overview of integrative modalities that may be used in pediatric palliative care. It will demonstrate how integrative care has evolved in the Hand in Hand/Palliative Care program at Children s Hospital and Medical Center and describe ways in which patients are benefiting. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how integrative care can be incorporated into their setting. This training will allow participants to explain the basic goals in integrative care as well as basic types of integrative care, self-report understanding of how integrative care was introduced at Children s Hospital and Medical Center and how they might apply those principles in their own setting, and enumerate the modalities of integrative care that are currently being used at Children s Hospital and Medical Center as well as the results that are being experienced. 12

Whether it is peer to peer, patient-related, or challenges with families, our field reports will detail conflicts of many kinds. But what if we were to base our clinical work (and our personal relationships) around integral models of caring for others through listening and utilizing certain methods of conquering these conflicts? This session will cheer on and champion the advocate in their approach to end-of-life caregiving.
