2 General Information Continuing Education Credits: A total of 4.0 CEU credit hours will be applied for through the NC Board of Nursing Home Administrators and through the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulations - Adult Care Home Continuing Education Program. An additional 1.5 CEU credit hours for Nursing Home Administrators will available for those attending the postsymposium general sessions. 4.0 CNE Contact Hours. Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants must attend entire activity to receive credit. No partial credit is given for this activity. Target Audience: Nurse Managers, Nursing Home Administrators, RNs, LPNs, and other interested healthcare professionals. Registration & Refund Policy: DEADLINE FOR SYMPOSIUM REGISTRATION IS APRIL 30, 2013 No refunds will be made after April 26. Written cancellations received prior to this date will be refunded less a $25.00 administrative fee. Hotel Information & Reservations: We have a block of rooms being held at The Grove Park Inn. Room reservations can be made by contacting The Grove Park Inn directly at The deadline for hotel reservations is April 12, Hotel Rates: $ per night single/double. 5 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Symposium Education Sessions Monday, May 13 2:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. DECUBITUS OMINOSIS: THE KENNEDY TERMINAL ULCER Marsha Lynn, Clinical Nurse Educator, PCHCV KTU is a skin breakdown that is different in appearance and rapidity of progression from the usual pressure ulcer. Its presence can be an indicator of imminent death. This presentation addresses recognition and documentation of a KTU along with appropriate treatment of this unique wound. 1. Describe the unique characteristics of a Kennedy Terminal Ulcer versus a normal pressure wound. 2. Recognize essentials components for documentation and management of a KTU 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. MEDICATION MISADVENTURES: LEARNING FROM OUR MISTAKES Cathy Fuquay, Consultant Pharmacist, Neil Medical Group This is a program that showcases 20 actual errors that have occurred in the presenter s LTC facilities. The audience gets to participate with a discussion as to why these errors occurred and suggestions are made as to the systems or preventive measures that could/should be put into place to avoid these errors in the future. Errors include issues with medication reconciliation, mistranscribed orders, labs missed with negative outcomes, etc. 1. Name the top reasons for litigation in LTC 2. Understand the impact of medication errors in LTC 3. Explore common sources and situations in which medication errors occur 4. Evaluate systems to avoid common errors 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. WE GRIEVE TOO: GRIEF IN THE WORKPLACE Patti Weatherford, Counselor, PCHCV Annette Walker, Counseling Services Manager, PCHCV What are the myths of grief and how you can approach the realities of grief? What is grief, its symptoms and how you, as a worker, are affected? As a health care provider, you will experience cumulative loss and grief. In this session, we will define grief and the factors that influence your grief process. We will look at how individuals grieve differently and explore ideas for healing grief in the workplace. In addition, we will look at ways to have balance in your life. Take this opportunity to learn that we grieve too---and what can help. 1. Define loss and grief specific to the role of the healthcare provider. 2. Recognize symptoms of grief. 3. Identify support systems. Throughout this presentation we will take an interactive approach to explore many ways professionalism may be tainted, and ways you can improve the overall value of professionalism in your workplace. 1. Define professionalism as it applies to the workplace. 2. Recognize ways staff play a role in creating an unprofessional image. 3.
