5 PRE-CONFERENCE The pre-conference is optional and offers two, ½ day sessions. They are scheduled for Tuesday June 14, 2011 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, 3303 North 3 rd Street, Temple, Texas. Registration is required for attendance of each pre-conference session. CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION This offering will allow participants to gain insight into some of the healthcare needs of the school age child and adolescent, as well as offer topics of interest to the school nurse s professional practice. The conference will be applicable for licensed nurses working in the school, clinic, or acute care environment. In addition to the conference objectives, attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers. CONFERENCE LOCATION The Conference and Pre-Conference will be held at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center 3303 N. 3 rd St. Temple, TX CONTACT HOUR INFORMATION Scott & White Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This activity provides up to contact hours for attending all sessions. At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to: CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES List healthy habits that can lead to healthy state. Discuss nursing related bills before the Texas 82 nd Legislative Session that might impact practice. Recognize activities among Texas youth related to gangs and drug use. Describe the initial management of common injuries occurring in a school setting. Discuss current childhood obesity issues. Identify dermatologic disorders common to the school age child and adolescent. Discuss initial management of common facial and dental injuries occurring in a school setting. Describe distinguishing symptoms between bacterial, viral and allergic conjunctivitis. Discuss ways to avoid common litigation involving the school nurse. Discuss current pharmacological and nonpharmacological management of common childhood cancers including late complications of therapy. Outline the benefits of the most commonly used contraceptive methods. Improve interpersonal interactions through the use of communication skills. Pre-Conference Describe effective ways to intervene and assist a victim of cyber-bullying. Examine issues surrounding self-injury to assist children and teens who practice self-harm. Recognize anxiety and panic in your students. Discuss the use of vaccines in relationship to HPV and cancer of the genitals, anus, mouth and throat. Discuss current trends in adolescents related to sexually transmitted diseases. Discuss how healthcare providers can influence the sexual health of their adolescent patients.
