New vaccines are developed, vaccine recommendations are revised, vaccine shortages occur, and new immunization tools are created to improve provider practices. The Kansas Immunization Conference provides the opportunity for healthcare providers to stay up-to-date on this important information as well as learn more from peers about successful initiatives and partnership opportunities within the state. Objectives At the conclusion of the conference participants should be able to: Identify opportunities within Kansas and their service area to improve vaccination rates Discuss current information about vaccines and vaccine preventable diseases Explore strategies and best practices to increase immunization coverage rates Implement new communication strategies for responding to questions about vaccine safety Compare current workplace policies regarding vaccine storage and handling with current guidelines Target Audience Physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, nurses and other health professionals interested in advocating for healthy lives by offering age and culturally-appropriate messages as well as scientifically-based vaccine delivery. 6 Description of Breakout Sessions for Kansas Immunization Conference Wednesday June 8, 2016 Session A Initiatives by Medicaid and KanCare to Improve HPV Vaccination Rates in Kansas - The three KanCare Managed Care Organizations (MCO's) of Amerigroup, Sunflower and United HealthCare, are working collaboratively on a Performance Improvement Project (PIP) to address the low rates of HPV immunization compliance in the state of Kansas. The KanCare MCO's will describe their Improving HPV Compliance Collaborative quality improvement project, as well as strategies they have used to improve HPV immunization rates and barriers encountered to improving compliance with the three part HPV immunization series. A representative from Kansas Medicaid will also present the basics of working successfully with Medicaid to receive the maximum benefit. Vaccine Preventable Disease Investigations in Kansas This will be a presentation covering the disease investigation processes in Kansas for vaccine preventable diseases which are followed by Local Health Departments. Appropriate techniques and priorities will be discussed. KSWebIZ: All about HL7 The KSWebIZ has many functions and capabilities that are often not taken advantage of by users. This presentation will describe the functionality of the system and explore the use of reports and leveraging WebIZ to improve the coverage rates for local immunizations. Homeless and Immunizations This presentation will provide practical experiences and share successes in working with homeless populations and increasing immunization rates. There will be opportunities in the next influenza season for increasing vaccinations to the homeless of Kansas and this presentation is designed to provide training on best practices to work with this population. Back to the Basics: Immunizations 101 There are basics that anyone working in immunizations should know. This session will focus on the basic guidelines and best practices for managing and administering vaccinations in your practice to prevent disease. Immunization Coverage Assessments Epidemiologist from KDHE will present the latest findings from Kansas studies on adolescent immunization rates as well as kindergarten coverage rates. This session will review BRFSS data, Operation Honey Bee data and the kindergarten survey. It will also review school entry policies and immunization exemptions. Wednesday June 8, 2016 Session B Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program This session will describe the many facets of the Perinatal Hepatitis B prevention program including activities to be conducted monitoring at risk newborns as well as share data of the successes and challenges faced today in Kansas. There are many opportunities to prevent Hepatitis B which will be explored in this presentation. Vaccine Preventable Disease Investigations in Kansas Repeat from session A Implementing ACIP Recommendations and Changes This session will explore how ACIP recommendations are developed and when they are implemented. There will be a focus on the newest ACIP recommendations for Meningococcal Group B Vaccine. Best practice implementation experiences will also be shared by a local provider. Improving Vaccine Ordering and Inventory Practices The nuts and bolts of successfully ordering and managing vaccine inventories will be described in this session. Presenters will discuss how to best evaluate current inventory and project needs over the coming weeks and months. Presenters will also

7 describe the details of the step by step process for successfully ordering vaccines as well as how to return wasted and expired vaccines. Improving Influenza Vaccine and PCV13 Rates in Older Adults of Wyandotte County - The KU Family Medicine Clinic received a grant from the American Academy of Family Physicians to improve influenza vaccine and PCV13 rates for older adults during the 2015 influenza season. The project was two pronged, focusing on improving clinic rates along with community outreach. The clinic program targeted clinicians through vaccine education and enhanced electronic medical record (EMR) use. PCV13 rates improved to 53.9%. There were challenges faced, including inconsistencies in documentation and running out of influenza vaccine. A low cost, sustainable clinic strategy to improve vaccine rates was developed that will be applied to improve other vaccine rates. This project also aimed to provide homebound patients with PCV13 vaccine through collaboration with local agencies, which in turn increased the patients access to primary care. Vaccine Safety Vaccine safety is often a concern expressed by parents and there are many studies demonstrating the safety of all vaccines administered in the United States. This presentation will focus on the science behind vaccine safety and will have special focus on the safety of the HPV vaccine which has been the target of many barriers to increasing the rate of immunization coverage. Thursday June 9, 2016 Session C Immunization Coverage Assessments Repeat from session A Improving Immunization Billing in Local Health Departments Kansas has received two consecutive grants from CDC to develop and implement improved billing practices for immunizations. This session will describe the products developed from these opportunities and review the successes found through implementation of the Billing Manual. Moving Up the Needle on the HPV Vaccination Rate - This session will discuss ways to improve that rate on a county level. The Shawnee County Health Agency had the most improved rate for urban health departments in 2015 through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment project Operation Honeybee. Shawnee County used several approaches to improve their rate, including school based clinics and utilizing different ways to communicate with parents. Successes and challenges will be presented along with materials used for the school clinics. The session will also cover best practices for improvement projects, including patient recall methods. Attendees will be encouraged to share information about their efforts to improve HPV rates.
