This year's conference highlights outstanding national and local speakers and pertinent topics in the plenary and breakout sessions. Palmer, MS, RN, CNS AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor Jasmine Rausch, MSN, RNC AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor Elizabeth Stockhowe, BSN, RN AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructor The AWHONN AFHMPP Workshop is a one-day workshop focusing on the application of advanced fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. The content presented in this workshop builds on the essential knowledge and skills gained through the FHMPP two-day workshop. The workshop uses a case study approach focusing on the analysis of FHM patterns/characteristics and related case information. The workshop emphasizes underlying maternal-fetal physiology, instrumentation, interpretation, intervention and verbal and written communication skills. Successful completion of a written examination is required for completing the workshop and earning continuing education credit. Expected Level of the Learner: The AWHONN AFHMPP workshop is designed for registered nurses who have successfully completed the FHMPP two-day workshop, a comparable fetal heart monitoring workshop, and/or are certified in fetal heart monitoring. In order to facilitate successful

3 completion of the AFHMPP Workshop, participants are expected to review AWHONN's Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices, Third Edition in advance of taking the course. On completion of this program, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify basic physiologic principles underlying fetal heart monitoring. 2. Describe advanced physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer and acidbase balance. 3. Describe advanced concepts in antenatal testing including analysis and interpretation of biophysical profiles and complex antenatal fetal heart monitoring tracings. 4. Identify physiologic principles, goals and interventions for patients undergoing antenatal testing. 5. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for patients undergoing antenatal testing. 6. Compare and contrast physiologic principles and causes of adult cardiac dysrhythmias with fetal cardiac dysrhythmias. 7. Analyze fetal cardiac dysrhythmia patterns and describe outcomes associated with these patterns. 8. Analyze complex fetal heart monitoring patterns including utterine rupture, maternal-fetal hemorrhage, and abruption, utilizing NICHD FHM nomenclature/definitions. 9. Apply perinatal risk management principles, communication techniques and documentation strategies related to complex and challenging patient care scenarios. Describe use of medication and support groups as interventions. Identify appropriate resources as referrals. A2. Choosing Appropriate Infant Milks and Formulas Cathy H. Breedon, PhD, RD, CSP, FADA Describe maternal nutrition factors that influence the nutritional adequacy of human milk. Describe other factors that influence the nutritional adequacy of human milk regardless of mother s intake. Describe the rationale for the appropriate use of particular special formulas, including products for premature infants, hypoallergenic products, hydrolysates, lactose-free, higher calorie, lower calorie, thickened products and specific formula components in infants with constipation and diarrhea. Describe lipid issues of importance in infant nutrition. Describe how to approach nonstandard use of feeding products for infants using Aunt Cathy s PMS System for Sorting Out Feeding Issues. Describe approaches to evaluate the adequacy of an infant s reported intake and growth when there is an apparent discrepancy or unusual nutritional needs. A3. Explain the limitations of the autopsy and the importance of a thorough scene investigation in infant deaths. Describe the impact of late preterm birth on increasing rates of preterm birth. Breastfeeding Matters in the Near Term Infant: What s New is Not So New Jeanne L. Friebe, RN, BSN, IBCLC Describe the utilization of a near term breastfeeding policy in everyday practice. Demonstrate the correct use of a nipple shield. Describe the assessment of effective transfer of milk from the breast when working with the near term infant. All are welcome to attend. Recognize the signs and symptoms of personal stress and learn self care strategies to increase resilience. Recognize and discuss the differences between burnout and compassion fatigue. REGISTRATION INFORMATION All registrations must be accompanied by a check payable to MPO and postmarked on or before September 5, A refund, minus a $30 processing charge, will be given if notification of cancellation is received on or before September 5, If a registered person cannot attend, a substitute is welcome. You may register at the conference, but there will be a late fee of $20 in addition to the usual registration fee. *To encourage teams of attendees from institutions or organizations, MPO is offering a $10 discount for each member of a team that registers together. The team must consist of at least 5 members and all team members registration forms must be received together. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn. Room rates are $72.95 plus tax per room, for up to two people per night. More than two people per night may result in additional charges; please confirm rates with hotel upon registration. This block of rooms will be held only until Wednesday, August 13, 2007, so make your reservations prior to that date. 7 PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES CONTACT HOUR INFORMATION SPECIAL THANKS PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS AND DISCLOSURE POLICY 2008 CONFERENCE This program is designed to provide state-of-the-art information on obstetric and newborn care practices, and is of particular importance and value to obstetric and newborn care nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, family physicians, physician assistants, obstetricians, pediatricians, and allied perinatal health care professionals. After attending the conference, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the process to implement individual and population-based systems of care that are respective of the consumer s race, age, culture and outcomes-based research. 2. Discuss the design plans of inpatient and outpatient care, for implementation by designated healthcare professionals, which address the unique nutritional, developmental, psychosocial, nursing and medical needs of mothers and infants. 3. Develop personal goals that will promote a positive outlook on their role as an essential member of the perinatal healthcare team. Successful completion of this activity requires that participants turn in all evaluation materials for attended sessions. Nurses: This three-day activity has been designed to meet the MN Board of Nursing continuing education requirements for up to 18.6 contact hours. Contact hours have been applied for through the Wisconsin Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval Program Committee. Final credit numbers to be provided on site.
