2 Iowa Trauma Coordinators Spring Conference Program Overview Join trauma colleagues from across Iowa to explore current issues in trauma care. Topics will help participants effectively care for trauma patients, improve hospital trauma programs and shape the future of trauma care in Iowa. Intended Audience Trauma Coordinators, Emergency nurses, emergency medical services providers and other interested staff. Program Agenda 8:00 am Registration/Continental Breakfast 8:30 am Farm Injuries: What Every Trauma Nurse Needs to Know Michael McGonigal, MD, FACS, Director of Trauma Services, Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota 9:30 am Break Farm work presents unique work hazards not seen in other industries. It is important to understand the injury mechanisms and the demographics of those affected in order to optimize care. This session will provide information on farm injuries, focusing on nursing management of acute injuries in smaller hospital emergency departments. Relate the demographics of farm accidents. Review common injury patterns form farm machinery. Discuss emergency department nursing management to optimize outcome and recovery from farm injuries. 9:45 am Unusual Rescue, Unusual Relationship Christopher Way, BA, Paramedic, Chief, Kootenai County Emergency Medical Service System, Coeur d Alene, Idaho This presentation is the story of how a successful rescue, involving a through-knee field amputation, was the ultimate test of a patient care system that had been developed over the last few years between a county-wide emergency medical service (EMS) system and local Level II trauma center in northern Idaho. This case demonstrates how important relationships between hospitals and EMS agencies are during emergency situations. The presentation will not only tell the story of this specific case, but also the efforts that went in to developing this relationship. Discuss the importance of developing relationships between EMS agencies and hospitals to create a system of patient care. Discuss how to help develop crucial relationships.

Discuss the lessons learned from the log truck incident involving a field amputation. 11:00 am Making Image Trend Easier Barb Devaney, RN, Trauma Coordinator, UnityPoint Health-St. Luke s Hospital, Cedar Rapids Learning to put patient information into image trend can be a daunting task. How does someone know what is important or where does someone find the information that belongs in each section? Once data is gathered, what needs to happen with the data? Identify sections of the image trend chart that are crucial to fill out. Identify barriers to getting accurate information within the system. Outline suggestions to use information as part of the participant s performance improvement program. Report writer within image trend can help participant s performance improvement program. 12:00 pm Lunch and Business Meeting 1:00 pm Human Trafficking: Medical Facilities Teresa Davidson, MSN, ARNP, MA, President, Chains Interrupted, Cedar Rapids 2:00 pm Break This session will provide the basic facts about human trafficking including definitions, statistics and grooming techniques. The presenter will also share what makes a person vulnerable, signs and symptoms and an action plan when someone is identified as a victim. Define human trafficking and several of its various typologies. Identify statistics, vulnerabilities, grooming techniques and facts about human trafficking. Explain signs and symptoms of a victim of human trafficking. Each discussion group will be facilitated by an experience Iowa trauma coordinator. Attendees will have the choice of which two discussion groups they would like to join. Identify new ways to improve the trauma program at attendees hospital. Develop an improvement plan for a hospitals trauma program. Compare and contrast current trauma program practices to trauma program practices being used at other hospitals.
4 Speaker Biographies Jeri Babb is director of emergency services at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She has oversight of three emergency departments, Mercy One aeromedical service, Mercy ambulance and the trauma service. She received her associate s degree in nursing from Iowa Central Community College, her bachelor s degree from Wichita State University and her master s degree in nursing from Drake. Her nursing career has focused primarily on critical care and emergency nursing and her passion is the care of trauma patients. She has been involved with Iowa s trauma system development since inception in the early 1990 s and serves as the current Trauma System Advisory Council chairperson. Teresa Davidson has practiced as a pediatric nurse practitioner for more than 22 years, recently becoming a sexual assault nurse examiner. She is also a pastor and part-time missionary and has led multiple international and national mission trips, including those rescuing and serving victims of human trafficking. Davidson is currently working in Guatemala to assist with prevention education and restoration. She founded and serves as the president of Chains Interrupted, an organization based out of Cedar Rapids dedicated to eradicating human trafficking in Iowa and beyond. Barb Devaney is a trauma coordinator at UnityPoint Health St. Luke s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. She received her nursing education from Allen College of Nursing in Waterloo and Mount Mercy College. She has grown in her nursing career by serving as a flight nurse, intensive care unit nurse, nurse manager of inpatient services and emergency room (ER)/trauma nurse and ER supervisor at various locations. Elizabeth Fuchsen is the trauma program manager of UnityPoint Health Des Moines Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children s Hospital. She has been with UnityPoint Health Des Moines for 12 years. She was an intensive care unit bedside nurse and held a position as an informatics nurse prior to transitioning to her current role. She sits on multiple hospital and system quality committees and participates in Iowa trauma improvement initiatives. Fuchsen received her bachelor s degree in nursing in 2005 from Allen College and is currently pursuing her master s degree in nursing from Walden University. Jennifer Lefeber is the emergency department nurse manager at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. She is a trauma nursing core course director, Epic certified clinical content builder, trauma coordinator and emergency medical service liaison for Shelby County Emergency Services Association. Lefeber also serves on the Iowa Trauma Coordinator committee and is a member at large for the Iowa chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association. She is also active in domestic violence and child abuse prevention and serves on many other committees related to safety and quality improvement throughout Myrtue Medical Center. Together with Shelby County Public Health she is working on projects for the community related to Stop the Bleed and Narcan for emergency responders. Lefeber graduated with a bachelor s degree in nursing from Clarkson College in Omaha and has worked at Myrtue Medical Center for 23 years. Christine Matthies is the director of emergency services at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. Matthies has lead the trauma program at the Level IV facility, served as the grant administrator for both the hospital preparedness program grant and emergency medical service system standards grant and is a Stop the Bleed instructor. Matthies obtained her bachelor s degree in nursing from Clarkson College and a master s degree in business administration with nursing management emphasis from Oklahoma Wesleyan University. She is currently the Iowa Trauma Coordinator president and previously served two terms as the District A representative. Margot McComas is a registered nurse working in the bureau of emergency and trauma services (BETS) at the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). McComas has bachelors degrees in classical languages from the University of Iowa and nursing from Creighton University. Her previous work experience includes working as a registered nurse in a trauma, medical and surgical intensive care unit since More recently, she was the night shift unit supervisor. McComas currently works as the trauma nurse coordinator at BETS. Working for IDPH has given her the opportunity to travel around Iowa helping to regulate, educate and offer resources to all Iowa s hospitals. Michael McGonigal is the chief trauma surgeon and oversees both the Level I adult and Level I pediatric trauma centers in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1982 and he pursued residency training in general surgery with an emphasis in trauma care at the Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. McGonigal moved to Minnesota in 1993 to become the director of trauma services for the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center, which subsequently changed its name to Regions Hospital. Dr. McGonigal lectures across the country on trauma-related topics and is involved in the development of state trauma systems. He also serves as a trauma center reviewer for the American College of Surgeons and several state trauma systems.
5 Christopher Way was appointed the chief officer of the Kootenai County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system in North Idaho in Prior to his current position, he served as an EMS chief for a county in Southeast Kansas. Way attended Labette and Coffeyville Community Colleges for his EMS certifications and holds a bachelor s degree in business management from Mid America Nazarene University. In his current role, Way oversees the delivery EMS via a fire-based EMS system. He serves on many local and regional EMS, fire, emergency management and health care committees. Brianne Wessels is the trauma program manager for Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She is also the District B representative to the Iowa Trauma Coordinators Board. She received her bachelor s degree in nursing in 2003 from Allen College. She is a certified emergency nurse as well as a trauma certified registered nurse. She has worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center since 2006 in the emergency department and in her trauma role since Diane Williams is an executive officer in the bureau of emergency and trauma services (BETS) at the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Williams has bachelors degrees in theatre from Southwest Minnesota State University and in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology from Drake University. She began an emergency medical service (EMS) career in 1997 and has worked as a pre-hospital provider for both and private EMS services, worked in a pediatric emergency department and in a cardiac catheterization lab during her tenure as an EMS provider. Williams currently manages the statewide trauma program, the EMS for children s program and coordinates grant writing and grant reporting requirements within the bureau. She also oversees the bureaus multiple budget streams. Williams has more than 11 years of experience working in the bureau of emergency and trauma services.
