2 Armed Violent Intruder Response Training In order for an individual to be an effective armed violent intruder response Champion, it is critical that there is an understanding of the bigger picture regarding why certain tools, techniques and principles are applied. This 2 day, 16 hour course has been specifically customized for the healthcare professional. Attendees will be exposed to dynamic lecture settings and hands on break-out sessions, which will deliver principally based, personal tools and techniques to proactively recognize and mitigate active aggression within various healthcare environments. A continental breakfast will be provided each day at 7:30 a.m. along with a working lunch. Attendance for the entire two days is mandatory, or no certificate will be issued at the conclusion of the workshop. Day One: June 5, :30 a.m. Registration/Refreshments 8:00 a.m. Introductions and Overview Two Day Agenda 8:15 a.m. Armed Violent Intruder Response (AVIR) 10:00 a.m. Break Discuss the Workplace Violence program as it relates to your job and how it relates to safety and security for patients, visitors and staff. Describe behavioral indicators that are consistent with warning signs of potential workplace violence and the circumstances and situations in the workplace that may contribute to workplace violence. Discuss the Action Step Series and how to properly implement and utilize the steps when faced with a violent or potentially violent situation in the workplace. Identify useful prevention strategies and general strategies to mitigate workplace violence. 10:15 a.m. AVIR (continued) 11:30 a.m. Working Lunch (provided) 12:15 p.m. Conflict Mitigation 2:00 p.m. Break Describe the characteristics of and identify the benefits of utilizing an assertive attitude while communicating with individuals. Identify and demonstrate active listening skills. Identify and demonstrate the appropriate intervention response for behaviors such ANXIETY, VERBAL AGGRESSION, and PHYSICAL AGGRESSION. 2:15 p.m. Conflict Mitigation (continued) 3:30 p.m. Break 3:45 p.m. Subject Under the Influence 4:45 p.m. Hot-Wash Identify the seven major categories of drugs that patients may use and the physical effects of each. Discuss the role of eye examinations in discovering the possibility of drug impairment. Review the day s topics and events. 5:00 p.m. Adjourn for day

3 Day Two: June 6, :30 a.m. Refreshments 8:00 a.m. Gang Violence, Terrorism, Anatomy of a Disturbance 9:30 a.m. Break Discuss the potential types of violence in your community. Identify proactive prevention strategies to help mitigate relative, potential violence. Identify gangs as they relate to your community and surrounding area, and terrorist organizations, foreign and domestic in the Mid-West. 9:45 a.m. Weapon Identification Discuss additional skill set, which will enhance the ability to be a critical eye-witness for quick identification and accurate reporting of specific types of threats to staff and responding public safety personnel. Describe personal awareness, which will assist you and others with appropriate decision-making during a critical incident involving active aggression. 11:00 a.m. Working Lunch (provided) 11:45 a.m. Personal Awareness Safety Strategies 12:45 p.m. Break Describe the elements of human intuition and the relevance to personal awareness. Articulate and define big picture awareness and the relevance to collective awareness. Define the anatomy of a dangerous person. Present and discuss strategy for children safety. Define stalking and the relevance of the act in regards to the home, work place and criminal statute. 1:00 p.m. Break-out Sessions 3:50 p.m. Break S.T.A.R.R. (Safe Training and Responsible Restraints) Conduct role play; discuss and demonstrate proper responses under duress. Re-directing a variety of attacks. Utilization of escape techniques. Forestalling chokes and strangulation. Physical control techniques of patients in various positions (standing, seated, supine and prone). Work Area Safety Resources Identify the eight categories of OUT Principles. Identify and understand the differences between cover and concealment. Identify and recognize items and objects in your work area that could be used for protection. Discuss the use of the buddy system as it relates to an Intruder Incident. 4:00 p.m. Testing/Evaluations 5:00 p.m. Adjournment Through a special arrangement with MDI, each attendee will receive an Armed Violent Intruder Response (AVIR) policy template designed especially for healthcare.
