1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Deputy Medical Director Reports to: Medical Director, Urgent Care Location: Across Greenbrook urgent care services. Key Working Relationships: Director of Operations; Director of Nursing; Associate Director for Quality and Governance. Has direct management responsibility for urgent care Clinical Directors. Job Summary: The Deputy Medical Director will: Provide senior clinical leadership and have senior clinical management responsibility for the governance and clinical quality of the Urgent Care Centres (UCCs), making sure they are safely developed to their full potential. Line-manage the urgent care clinical directors (and UCC Lead GPs where no clinical director is in place) to ensure they are managing the day to day delivery of safe clinical services. Work closely with the Director of Nursing to develop a senior clinical management workforce including clinical directors, lead GPs and Lead Nurses that are able to effectively manage the Greenbrook clinicians and allied healthcare professionals. Deputise for the Medical Director - Urgent Care when required The post holder will focus on urgent care but may take responsibility for specialist projects and other services when required. Key Responsibilities: Management Responsibilities will include: Senior clinical oversight of all Greenbrook Healthcare UCCs and Out of Hours services including: Oversight of clinical governance across the services including regular attendance at clinical governance meetings. Ensuring audit is integral in the monitoring and development of all services. Being visible and responsive to the needs of the clinical workforce, this will include being available at out of hours times where needed. Taking senior responsibility as part of the team investigating Serious Incidents (S.I) and Higher level Incidents (HLIs), conduct root cause analysis where needed. Working closely with the quality and governance manager to ensure governance processes are fit for practice. Supporting clinical directors in the sign off of clinical complaints; final sign off of complaints where no clinical director is in post. Day-to-day management of Greenbrook Clinical Directors and Lead GPs to ensure optimal delivery of clinical services Support sites to maintain CQC compliance and be involved with focused CQC preparatory work in the run up to inspections. Part of senior management on call team Part of local escalation processes Senior clinical input into clinical staff development Supporting the recruitment of GPs, lead GPs and Clinical Directors into new services Recruitment and induction of new Lead GPs and Clinical Directors Appraisal of senior Greenbrook clinicians Management of complex GP performance issues Senior clinical input into service development Working with the Operations Director to develop services and embed best practice across all sites Review and development of new policies and pathways as required Leading on new projects, supporting the medical director in the development of innovative and responsive clinical services. Mobilisation of new services as they arise Support in writing the clinical sections of bids for new services 2
3 Building relationships with key stakeholders Senior clinical staff in our partner organisations Senior clinical staff in host acute trusts Meetings with Commissioners Key responsibilities as a clinician: To provide triage where required To provide complete consultations with assessment, treatment and management of patients of all ages presenting with primary care problems at the UCC To record full clinical notes using the UCC IT systems To complete all admin work relating to consultations To work as part of the wider clinical team- supporting Nurse Practitioners, HCAs, and GP colleagues and training Doctors To manage referrals of UCC patients on to acute specialities, A&E or community services where required To support the redirection of patients to their registered GP To give education to patients on healthy living and disease prevention To give education to patients on appropriate use of NHS services To prescribe medicines in accordance with UCC formulary and dispense medicines from stock where available To complete discharge letters for all patients seen in the UCC To complete coding requirements on the clinical record in line with the Trust and Greenbrook requirements To use all internal and external referral pathways for patients in the UCC To adopt a reflective approach to clinical practice, to report all incidents and work with the team to investigate incidents To prepare response for any complaints concerning his / her work To follow the UCC safeguarding and vulnerable adults policy To restrict the use of diagnostics according to the specification of the UCCs To maintain full registration with the GMC and have full medical liability insurance Auditing clinical activity and contributing to its evaluation Attend team meetings and other meetings as necessary Education Training and Development: Engage in appropriate professional development activities in order to maintain clinical competence and performance by attending Centre staff meetings and joint educational meetings Contribute to the facilitation of a suitable educational environment in which to support the development and learning of junior doctors, junior Nurses, medical and nursing students on placement Undertake teaching sessions as required to undergraduate and post-graduate staff within the multi-disciplinary team, if required Undertake mandatory and statutory training, keeping up to date with emergency procedures undertaking training as required. These will include major incident, advanced resuscitation, fire, minimal handling 3
4 Personal & professional development 1. Annual reviews Participate in own annual NHS appraisal and GMC revalidation process. Participate in annual Greenbrook appraisal 2. Development of others Be an effective role model and resource for the UCC team and other members of the multi- disciplinary team. Maintain clinical excellence within the department and provide education and training both formerly and informally for colleagues. 6 Uniform and Dress Code All nursing and Emergency Care Practitioners should adhere to infection control principles and must wear a uniform when on duty. Smoking Smoking is not allowed on any part of Greenbrook Healthcare premises. Policies & Procedures The post holder is expected to comply with Greenbrook Healthcare s policies and procedures. Personal Property Greenbrook Healthcare is unable to accept responsibility for articles of personal property lost or damaged on its premises whether by burglary, fire, theft or otherwise and staff are advised to insure against all risks. 6
