ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE n i i..., n, Club Work Lcking THE ACADEMIC YEAR ef is slowly pproching close t we new tee ourselves t the hlf-wy mork. Looking ov*r the pst one-hlf Of this yer, we see Estern sorely lcking in one re. Club work. We see tht the clubs on Estern's cmpus hve been less ctive this yer thn ever before, especilly in the relm of providing ctivities for the college community. It is shme for cmpus the size of Estern with the numerous recognized orgniztions it hs tht these orgniztions cn function in no other wy other thn to ssemble once yer te hve their picture tkeh for the "Milestone." There re quite few county orgniztions, honorry societies, deprtmentl clubs, professionl clubs, religious groups, nd service orgniztions. The min purpose of these clubs is to seek nd provide the needs of their own ctive members, most dmirble objective ccomplished by most of the groups, iuf wht becomes of the rest of the students on cmpus who do not prticipte in clubs, or who mintin membership in the clubs tht hve limited meetings nd meeting times? The needs of these stud" enfs re not met or rrely met. These re the students who complin tht there f nothing to dp on cmpus nd thus go home to become the proverbil "suitcnsers," or seek ctivity wy from cmpus. As fr s we cn interpret these clims, we must dmit tht there is more truth thon fiction to the common gripe. As there re no orgniztions on cmpus whose primry function it is to provide for the socil nd ctivity needs of the student body, the logicl conclusion is tht these needs should be met by the other clubs. There r9 severl orgniztions who hve worked rther diligently t providing for these needs, but severl groups cnnot do if ll. The ttendnce t the functions provided by these groups prove* the need nd desire for moire: There re dnces provided by different orgniztions fter most of the home gmes, but these re not enough either. Dnces nd other socil functions cn be profit mking ctivity for the clubs. The ttendnce is usully lrge enough tht the ticket sles cn defry ll the expenses nd.leve enough over to mke profit for the sponsoring group. In ddition to providing for the socil tmosphere nd helping the orgniztion to remin solvent, the function con provide more ctivity for the sponsoring group to help mintin interest nd promote prticiption of the members^ We hope to see mny mere such ctivities provided for the students this semester. 5 - -Estern Progress- Fridy, Feb. I, 966 with PROGRESS ON SPORTS SHARPSHOOTERS SCORING AT ALL-TIME RECORD RATE The college bsketbll tems re scoring more points thn ny previous seson, this yer. This is due to ntion-wide collection of the shrpest field-gol shooters in the history of The NCAA Service Bureu sttistics for 9 gmes plyed by mjor-college tems through midseson show tht the current scoring verge is 5.3 points per gme, this includes both t&ms. Lst yer t the end of the seson new record of 6- ws set but this yer's totl is lmost three points better. The colleges' shrp shooters re currently hitting n ll time high of 3.3 per cent of their field gols, compred with lst seson of 3.. If this is broken down, the two tems combined re mking 50.9 field gols out of 36. ttempts. It my lso be noted tht.the Mroons re leding the O.V.C nd re lso well bove the ntionl verge by shooting very ccurte f. percent. Geogrphiclly every section of the country is shring in tae scoring increse except the trdditionl point leder, the Midwest). The Big Ten re verging 60 points, gme,. points below its ll-time sectionl high of lst seson nd presently rnks third behind the surging Southwest which is leding ll the sections with 6. points gme. The Rockies re in second position with 6. This section's increse is lrgely due to the high scoring tems like Wyoming nd Brighm Ybung. The Southwest's rte is nine points higher thn lst yer, the biggest gin shown by eny section over the full seson. Among the miserly, the Missouri Vlley is thretening to rest the resistnce crown wy from the perennil leder, the fw West. The Missouri Vlley is the top defensive section which hs yielded just.3 points gme compred to the Fr West's 7.8. The finl nd over-ll loop of ll the regions in scoring re s follows: Southwest leds with 6. points followed by Rockies 6.; Midwest 60-0; South 55.; Bst 5.5; Pr West 7.8; nd the Missouri Vlley with.3. Bodkin My St Record Eddie Bodkin my become Estern's leding ll-time scorer gme erlier thn expected t lest hs homecourt Alumni Coliseum fns hope so. The 6-7 Hrrodsburg senior, who is verging 5.0 points per gme, ws expected to ctch ssistnt coch Jck Adms in rod encounter with Murry, but 0-point outburst ginst Mrshll Wednesdy night pushed bun within 55 points of Adms'mrk. And, the Mroons hve two more gmes jn Alumni Coliseum before they tke to the rod A third encounter, ginst the PUerto Rico Ntionl Bsketbll Tem, will be plyed here Tuesdy, but sttistics will not be counted. Bodkin; who strted the seson with 955 creer points, now hs,05, with seven gmes to go. Adms' scored,60 in three sesons from The Mroons fce Middle Tennessee Sturdy nd Austin Pey Mondy in Alumni Coliseum clshes, nd Bodkin needs Wverge 7.5 in the two gmes to tie Adms, 8.0 to go Tht's tll order for nyone, but Bodkin hs scored 8 points, or better, in seven of 6 gmes this yer, getting more thn 80, on four occsions. He needs only to put two such efforts together on successive nights to become Estern's gretest point-producer before his homecourt fens. The All-Americ cndidte's other sttisticl credentils ere s impresm ve s his scoring. Bfe's hitting n even 50 per cent of his shots, 79 of 358, end 77.3 per cent of his free throws, hitting 9 of 9. In one recent stretch, he bit 3 consecutive grtis tosses without miss, five short of n Estern mrk. He's lso the tem's top rebounder with 0.7 rebounds per gme, divided lmost eqully between the offensive nd defensive bords. Other key men in the Mroon ttck, who will be trying to improve Estern's -7 overll nd 5-3 OVC mrks, ginst the Blue Riders nd Governors re 6- Bill Wlton,.. nd, John. Crr, 9.. Crr, 57 per cent shooter, hs developed offensive constetency fter shky strt, scoring in double figures in the Mroons' lst three contests. Ije ** ng the OVC hi shooting, the Mroons re sinking!
