5 WHY I GOT INTO AMATEUR RADIO My uncle Wyne ws one originl tech-nerds, lthough we didn t cll him tht! He ws into photogrphy nd electronics while owning n electricl repir business. About this sme time n strnge ntenn ppered on ro my next door neighbor who ws generl contrctor. This ws my introduction to rdio. Both se men let me tlk on ir CB rdios nd I ws hooked on rdio. Now, this ws bck in dy tht you ctully hd to hve license! Anor uncle who ws locl M.F.A. bulk oil distributor went in with Uncle Wyne nd y got into business bnd rdio operting somewhere in 46 MHz re. I took gret plesure in nswering Uncle Wyne or tlking to Uncle Bernrd from bse sttion. Fst forwrd to 1974 nd CB rdio crze 70 s nd I soon hd my own rdio in my cr nd bse rdio which I thoroughly enjoyed using nerly constntly. Tlking loclly never relly cught on with me nd I ws lwys fscinted by long-distnce contcts I herd ing mde (illeglly t this time, course!). So, f to college I went, CBequipped, nd dodging Smokey Ber up nd down I-70 nd 50 highwy. It eventully got boring nd I hd herd bout hm rdio from chief engineer t KMMO/KMFL (Mrshll) where I worked s high school sports correspondent nd weekend rock-nd-roll disc jockey. The owner locl CB store (Wyne Eichelrger) told me hm tht he knew in town nd tht I should tlk to her if I ws relly interested in finding out more bout mteur rdio. This led me to front door one Ruth Vollrth (KØONK) nd month lter I mnged to squeeze by her 5 W.P.M. code test by skin my teeth. A couple weeks lter ficil written exm cme in mil nd on July 4, 1976, I pssed test. Three weeks lter tht little yellow nd white piece pper rrived in mil nd I ws suddenly WNØVHN nd month lter I ws WBØVHN when distinctive novice clss clls were eliminted. Two weeks lter I rrived t C.M.S.U. s freshmn music mjor nd met Clrke Homoly (KØRPC) nd gn operting college club sttion (WAØWQA) nd it s Hethkit HW-100 in fternoons on 80m CW. I think I ws one few students on cmpus tht hd building key in those dys nd I eventully got to spending time in evenings in little close (for which Dr. Homoly hd provided key s well( in old electronics building t Mguire nd South street. My first rig hs monster crystl controlled trnsmitter tht hd en built for Ruthie by Al Schwneke (WØASSK) from UMR in Roll. I hd crystls for couple 80m nd 40m frequencies. My first receiver ws n Electrovoice RME-4530Awhich I still hve nd it STILL works! I soon lerned tht one my music pressors, Nel Seipp (KØZAD), ws hm nd he invited me over to see his sttion nd ply little HF. Dr. Seipp hd Glxy III trnsceiver (80, 40, nd 20 meter) which ws younger bror Ruthie s infmous Glxy V so course it ws fmilir to me. Lter tht yer (1977) Doc Seipp sked me if I would interested in hving G-3 s he hd just bought new rig course I jumped on it! By this time I ws lredy working towrd Generl clss license nd pssed it erly in 1978 in front der old Ett Songer, exminer t F.C.C. field fice in Rytown. I hd lredy st for my third clss commercil phone license in front her in 1973 nd knew tht she ws no-nonsense person. The KC re hms clled her Godzill - some you rememr how nerve-rcking on Ett s test sessions could by nd if you filed you hd to wit 30 dys fore you could try gin nd re ws NO credit for pssed element n, eir!. With 13 W.P.M. under my lt, three months lter I mde it through Advnce clss test ( written test only in those dys! During this sme time I got to know Ry nd Ktie Putz, Jeff Kesterson (WBØLRX), Bob Pierce (WBØFND), Wyne Thomson (NØWT), Jeff Koch, nd mny or Wrrensburg re hms nd I ws involved with originl Wrrensburg A.R.C. even hosting 1978 S.E.T. from my luxurious estte out t Thunderbird Court where I plyed SSB nd RTTY (with REAL RTTY mchines!) nd frequently entertined. With grdution cme move to Knss City nd in spring 1984 I pssed my 20 W.P.M> code nd Extr Clss written (gin under Godzill s wtchful, intimidting eye!). I pssed my code test lst week fore F.C.C. dopted 10 question multiple guess test for code so it ws one minute perfect copy or five minutes with t lest 70% copied correctly (it felt more like 95% when I ws tking it!). My most recent wrd ws erning ARRL Dimond DXCC Chllenge wrd by working 150 countries in 2012 but my most prized wrd is ARRL A-1 Opertor Club wrd which Ruthie hd told me she nominted me for just fore she pssed wy. Bck in 2010 when wrd ws once gin ing promoted by Legue somebody (wish I knew who to thnk!) put in second nomintion nd one hot ugust dy my!-1 Opertor Awrd shoed up in mil! I hve hd plesure nominting ors to A-1 Opertor s Club which is one wrd s privileges, too. Over 37 yers I ve en n mteur I ve enjoyed ing involved in Skywrn, both Arm (AAR7MS) nd Air Force M.A.R.S. (AFA7VV), pcket, stellites, RTTY nd digitl modes, APRS, HF contesting, nd pper chsing. I ve mde lot gret friends in mteur rdio over yers nd still enjoy driving down rod, mic in hnd! This is cold process so tkes month cure time 5 pints wter 12 ounces lye 5 pints lrd or or ft (rendered if niml ft) Put cold wter in stinless steel bowl, dd lye nd stir with wooden or stinless steel spoon until lye is dissolved. Add lrd nd stir continuously until sponifies. Tht mens it looks cremy nd smooth nd trces when dripped from spoon. Pour into molds. Let set until strting to set up. Score if in lrge mold. Let set bout 4-5 hours or overnight. Tip out molds onto plstic or wx pper. Let cure for 30 dys. This lets lye finish working. If used to erly, my burn skin.
