Jobs in Mine reched 610,200 in June 2001, declining quickly to 603,800 in December Therefter, there were slight gins nd losses through the second qurter 2003, with the number jobs in June 2003 t 603,900. Between June 2003 nd June 2004, there ws gin 6,300 jobs. Job gins were recorded in helth cre nd socil ssistnce, retil trde, leisure nd hospitlity services, other services, government, nd construction. These gins were prtilly fset by loss 2,300 mnufcturing jobs. Chnging Industril Structure Jobs While the totl number sesonlly-djusted nonfrm wge nd slry jobs in June 2004 ws equl to the number recorded in June 2001, the structure industril jobs continued to chnge in Mine. Service-producing jobs incresed while mnufcturing jobs declined. Mnufcturing jobs fell by 14,400 between June 2001 nd June In June 2001, mnufcturing jobs ccounted for 12.4 percent ll sesonlly-djusted nonfrm wge nd slry jobs. By June 2004, mnufcturing ccounted for 10 percent ll jobs. Construction nd severl service-producing industries recorded job gins. The lrgest increse ws recorded by eductionl nd helth service jobs, rising by 7,700 between June 2001 nd June This industry ccounted for 17.8 percent ll sesonllydjusted nonfrm jobs in June 2004, up from 16.5 percent in June 2001.

Southern Mine Pul Trhn (207) After 35 yers, Portlnd is in dnger losing the Portlnd-to- Yrmouth N.S. ferry service.the owners Scoti Prince Cruises re ssessing economic indictors, prticulrly the decrese in pssengers from 165,000 in 2001 to 153,000 in 2003>Kohl's Deprtment Store on Route 1 11 in Biddeford is scheduled to open in October, generting pproximtely 100 new jobs. Applied Therml Sciences Snford nd Technology Systems Wiscsset hve developed lser-weld ing technology pplicble to the shipbuilding industry. The compnies hope to build $20-$50 million fcility nd employ up to 50 people in high-tech mnufcturing nd reserch nd development positions.

While the July rte for Mine 4.2 percent ws nerly unchnged from 4.1 percent for June, hs dropped by lmost 1 full percentge point from the July 2003 rte 5. percent, representing decline 6,200 in the number unemployed to 29,300 in July "Recent job gins continued in July, with n over-the-month increse 1,400 sesonlly-djusted it nonfrm wge nd slry jobs," sid Commissioner Fortmn. "The lrgest job gins were recorded in eduction nd helth services nd leisure nd hospitlity services." Between July 2003 nd July 2004, sesonlly-djusted nonfrm wge nd slry jobs rose by 5,600 to 61 1,500. Job gins were recorded in retil trde, helth cre nd socil ssistnce, ccommodtion nd food services, other services, construction, nd pressionl nd busi ness services. Prtly fsetting the job gins, there ws loss 3,000 mnufcturing jobs. The July sesonlly-djusted unemployment rte for Mew Hmpshire ws 3.9 percent. The djusted ntionl rte for July ws 5.5 percent, down from 5.6 percent in June nd 6.2 percent in July The not-sesonlly-djusted Mine unemployment rte for Lbor Mrket Informtion July ws 3.5 percent, down from 4.0 percent for June nd 4.4 percent for July The undjusted ntionl rte ws 5.7 percent for July, down from 5.8 percent in June nd 6.3 percent in July Not-sesonlly-djusted July unemployment rtes for Mine counties rnged from 2.0 percent in Lincoln County to 7.4 percent in Somerset County.
