1 Volume 17, Number 23 June 4, 2018 NEWS Unused Meal Plan Dollars Campus Dining Team, Ext This is a reminder that with the meal plan program, the rollover feature allows participants who did not spend all of their money month to month to roll that money over until the next month to have it all available for use. This will continue until June 30, 2018 as outlined in that plan. What this means is that if you have any dollars left in your meal plan on, June 30, 2018 and have not spent them or transferred them to a gift card by the end of that day, you will forfeit any remaining balance. It is to your advantage to spend the money within your meal plan down if possible, rather than transfer it to a gift card. Remember that the dollars on a gift card are treated like cash. We cannot waive the 6 % sales tax on meals purchased with gift cards and only the 10% Villager discount can be applied on this money. One question that has been asked is whether the amount forfeited from the meal plan can be counted as a charitable donation. Unused meal plan amounts do not meet IRS definitions of a donation. These are really just fees that are paid for services that you choose not to completely use. If you are unsure of your remaining balance in the meal plan, you can check your receipts each time you dine. The remaining balance is located on the bottom of the receipts at all 3 dining venues. You can also contact a member of the Campus Dining team at ext or ext to check remaining balances. Gift cards may be purchased at the Harmony Café from 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. and the Campus Inn from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. through and the Campus Inn from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. Page 1 of 8
2 Annual Conference of the Church of Brethren Pastoral Care, Ext The Annual Conference of the Church of Brethren is in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 4-8. The theme is Living Parables with reference to Matthew 9:35-38 The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few Faith Community sends a delegate to this conference, and Pastor Linda also attends. For several years, the Church has supported an agency in the host city that has been identified by the city for specific needs. The Witness to the Host City agency focus this year is First Step Home, a place for hope a place for help a place for healing. First Step Home is the only addiction treatment center in Cincinnati allowing children up to the age of 12 to live with their mother while she is in treatment. They provide a continuum of care, and work to assist women in rebuilding their families as they break the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction. Faith Community is asking for your monetary donations to help the women and children in Cincinnati. Please give this your prayerful consideration. Beginning immediately and through June 25, please place your donation (if a check, payable to The Faith Community) in a white envelope available on the literature cart outside, in the Pastoral Care Office, or at the Postal Center in Harmony Ridge; note that your donation is for Annual Conference Witness. If you use offering envelopes, please include your envelope number. Send or drop off your contribution to the Pastoral Care office. Red, White and Blue Alert Villager Military Veterans Committee Lately you read about respect for the Flag of the United States of America and how you honor it. Let s consider where a flag, or flag referred to as a banner, standard, ensign or sign is mentioned in the Bible. Numbers, Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, even Matthew and Luke contain verses that are relevant to a flag. And there may be other passages as well. Numbers 1:52 states The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own standard, according to their armies. Also Winston s dictionary indicates that flag and banner are often used interchangeably. In addition, our American Flag is often referred to as the Standard, Ensign, Colors and even the nickname Old Glory. And what about our Star Spangled BANNER? Enough said! Put, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. on your calendar now to come to the and include your dress code of red or white or blue, so you can pay tribute to one of your most prized possessions that Lee Greenwood sings can never be taken away. Watch the next Village Voice for the three cheers to our red, white and blue, and coercion for you to be in the for a patriotic personal salute to the Flag of the United States of America. Thank you for your participation in this ministry to the women and children in the First Step Home program in Cincinnati. Blessings on your journey. Page 2 of 8

5 Power Outages Brian Lawrence, Ext Director of Village Housing Power outages occur from time to time on campus; unfortunately, in most cases we have little control over them. We've put together a list of some important things to keep in mind when an outage occurs. One thing that we suggest to each villager is to keep a good flashlight beside your bed and to check the batteries on a regular basis. Another suggestion would be to purchase a small flashlight that plugs into a receptacle and if power goes off, the light will automatically come on. Phone service should not be affected during power outages, but Villagers will experience problems with cordless phones that plug into receptacles not working. We suggest that you always keep a phone with a cord and no electric power connection in one of the rooms of your home to use in a case like this. Another option would be to also have a cell phone available and charged in an emergency; however, note that cell phone service may be affected due to the type of emergency. It is still not as reliable as landline service. Another problem may be the automatic garage doors, which use power to open. There is a release on all automatic garage doors; it is usually marked by a red tag at the top of the garage door. We also have a special tool to open the Harmony Ridge West garage doors for garages that have no other access door, but the garage door. there is a power outage. We can transport you into the Mission Point Building if needed. It is also a good idea to call the power companies to report the outages when they occur. Please contact Met-Ed at or Adams Electric at As always, please feel free to call us if you have a concern or questions. Telephone questions should be directed to Kirk Frobenius at ext and Maintenance questions at ext. 5291, or you can call the Mission Point Building Receptionist anytime of the day or night by dialing 0 or if you need assistance during a power outage. Are You a Follower? Oliver Hazan, Ext VP of Sales and Marketing Did you know that you can follow Cross Keys Village on a variety of social media outlets? In addition to our website, you can find us on Linkedin, Twitter and, of course, Facebook. Simply go to to find us online first. At the top of the page you will see icons linking you to our LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook pages. These pages are where we share up-to-the-minute photos, tidbits, and recent achievements. If you see things happening in the community or know of events of interest coming up that would make a good story, feel free to let me know. If there is anyone who has special life support equipment that needs electrical power, please call into the Residential Health Office at ext or the Mission Point reception desk by dialing 0 or after hours. We maintain a list to check with you if Page 5 of 8

It is a good idea to check and make sure your telephone number(s) are on the list to avoid unwanted calls. To eliminate junk mail: You can Opt Out of receiving prescreened offers of credit or insurance by calling OPTOUT ( ) or visiting the website at You can choose to be added to the list permanently or to renew every 5 years. You will need to provide personal information to be removed from the lists. If you would like to learn more about these programs as well as other valuable information such as obtaining your free credit reports and types of identity theft scams, please visit the Federal Trade Commission s website at There is also a section where you can file consumer complaints with the FTC.
