1 2018 Battle Re-enactment Invitation You are invited to participate in the re-enactment of the Battle of San Jacinto. This event will occur on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The Re-enactment Committee has been working through the year to plan and finance this event. The re-enactment will be held at the same location as last year. Participation Please note this is a juried event and by invitation only. New volunteers must send in a photo of themselves and their kit for the committee to review for acceptance to join this re-enactment. To participate in this event, you must accurately portray in your character your dress and your encampment, the combatants or civilians of All attire and equipment will be reviewed. Items that are not appropriate to 1836 must be removed from 8 am until 6 pm the day of the re-enactment. Remember that you are a part of an army, either in retreat or hotly in pursuit, or you are a civilian running for your life with little more than the clothes on your back. Considering these circumstances, do not clutter your camp with an over abundance of knick-knacks and trinkets. If you have questions about your camp, please call your camp commander for help and advice. Registration If you wish to participate, please complete the enclosed Registration and Release of Liability forms. Even if you are not a combatant, you must check in. Due to the growth of the event, Pre Registration is MANDATORY. We can no longer perform registration on the field because of the time constraint. Fill out and return all your forms as soon as possible. Forms MUST be completed, ed, or mailed and postmarked no later than April 13, Please do not wait until the last minute if you can. This will be greatly appreciated. Send forms to: Postal Mail LINDA TUBBS c/o SAN JACINTO VOLUNTEERS FIRE CREEK DR HOUSTON, TX register@sanjacintovolunteers.org Or complete the Registration Form online at: San Jacinto Volunteers Invitation Page 1 of 6

2 Camps Families Over the past few years, more family members and friends have been joining their re-enactors at this event. Many are coming dressed in 1830 s period-correct clothing while others wear contemporary dress. We have requested that contemporarily dressed family members and friends and those not checked in be prepared to join the general public from 10AM until the conclusion of the battle re-enactment. This is required to support authenticity and their safety. Therefore, please do not be offended if non-compliant friends or family are asked to leave the field or camp. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Since historical records, no camp followers were associated with the Texian Army at San Jacinto, there should be no women or children present within that camp. Those that are pre-registered and in 1830 s dress are welcome to participate as part of the Runaway Scrape in the Civilian Camp. As in the past, we request that participants stay in their respective camps. Those that wander into the opposing army's camp will be arrested and held as a prisoner of war until the end of the battle. There will be a camp for Civilians. All other that are not with family must set up in the Texians camp. This is being done so to enlarge our small looking Texian Camp. Women We are starting to have more women participants in the Runaway Scrape camp and welcome these volunteers. In keeping with the theme of the Scrape, we must request the dress of the ladies not be as formal as we have seen in the past. Remember that you are running for your life and as in the camp are asked to keep things simple and that must include your type of dress. We will not allow Civil War / Formal Ball type dresses or tennis shoes. It is not our intention to keep anyone from attending the Re-enactment but we do have a responsibility to the public to keep the re-enactment as accurate to history as possible. Children Children brought to this event must be in period dress and under parental supervision. Other living historians are NOT responsible for your child s supervision or safety. The San Jacinto Volunteers, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, or the San Jacinto Museum of History are NOT responsible for any injuries incurred during the course of this event. Women and children in period-correct dress following the Mexican Army must be prepared to support their roles in the re-enactment. Health If you have any health or medical issues, concerns, or problems that we need to be aware of, you MUST let us know on your registration form. This information is very important so that we can ensure your safety at and during the re-enactment. If someone in your family is unable to stand or walk for long periods of time or has any other medical problems that will require your attention, we must ask that you make plans for your family members so they may be made comfortable on the park grounds and not in camp. It is truly for the greater good San Jacinto Volunteers Invitation Page 2 of 6

3 We see spectators fall out each year due to dehydration and they are not dressed in period attire. Start drinking a lot of water the day before and make certain you drink plenty of water the morning of the reenactment. Bring your canteen and use it all day long. There will be plenty of fresh water with in the camps. If you do not see where the water is located, ask some one. No modern cigarettes allowed in the camps during the reenactment. Safety Artillery If an artillery crew is anywhere near a gun, assume it is loaded of about to be fired. If the gunner (the person at the rear of the trail) has his arm raised above his head, KNOW that the gun is loaded and preparing to fire. If you see the artillery crews holding the implements above their heads or if the gun is vacated with only two crewmembers working the gun, something has gone wrong with the firing of the piece so you need to stay clear of the weapon. Cavalry Period correct wardrobe is required and must be approved by the steering committee. Period correct reproduction tack is preferred but modern tack may be camouflaged with blankets, burlap, etc. All tack must be in good, safe, maintained condition. Tout horse must be in good health and up to the rigors of the event. A CURRENT NEGATIVE COGGINS IS REQUIRED FOR EACH HORSE. Please print out and bring a hard copy of your coggins to be left with you unit leader. NO EXCEPTIONS. New coggins rules went into effect January 1 st and the coggins MUST be in the owner s name. No Stallions. TPWD has specific rules concerning picket lines and corrals. Ask your unit leader for more information. Do not tie your horse to trees, shrubs, tents, etc. TPWD rules also require proof of your ability as a horseman. Be prepared to show such ability if asked to do so. Your horse MUST be accustomed to this type of event (gunfire, cannons, crowds). A limited number of horse earplugs will be available. Rake and bag manure/hay before breaking camp and leaving the park. The Cavalry Commanders listed on this invitation are authorized to remove the rider and horse from the field if there is a problem. For a complete list of rules, contact Andy Anderson San Jacinto Volunteers Invitation Page 3 of 6
