2 INTRODUCTION Since its beginning, the Boy Scouts have encouraged outdoor adventures as learning experiences. In that tradition, Kansas Sea Base (KSB), an inland water safety and merit badge program, was developed by the Konza District of the Coronado Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The program is cosponsored by the Blue Valley Yacht Club, the Blue Valley Youth Sailing Foundation, and the Manhattan Masters Rowing Club. Kansas Sea Base uses keel boats, Sunfish, kayaks, canoes, motor boats, rowing shells, and ski boats provided by supporting organizations to teach the merit badges. KSB offers First Class and above Boy Scouts, who are at least 13 years of age, and male and female Venture Scouts the opportunity to complete one of these merit badges: Small Boat Sailing, Canoeing, Motor Boating, Water Sports, Rowing or Kayaking. The Water Sports merit badge is a demanding course making prior water skiing or wake boarding experience very helpful in completing the course at Kansas Sea Base. GENERAL INFORMATION Kansas Sea Base is located on the grounds of the Blue Valley Yacht Club (BVYC) on Tuttle Creek Lake approximately 16 miles north of Manhattan, KS (see back cover). The adventure begins Friday, August 9 with check in starting at 5:00 p.m. Youth need to be present when the program begins at 7:00 p.m. Friday and remain until closing on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Scouts need to provide their own tents and eating utensils. Meals are served from a central kitchen to all scouts and scouters with scouts providing kitchen support on a rotating schedule. There must be an adult leader for every eight youth from each unit. Adult leaders will be expected to supervise and assist all youth and will be asked to serve as safety observers of water activities. The rules of the Safe Scouting Manual will apply, including requirements for female Venture Scouts. COSTS The costs of KSB 2013 is $55.00 per youth. This fee includes four meals, a cracker barrel, a Kansas Sea Base T-Shirt, KSB patch and liability insurance. The adult registration fee of $40.00 includes the costs of food, liability insurance and a KSB patch. Additional T-shirts can be ordered on the registration forms. Additional patches may be available at KSB. REGISTRATION Youth and adult registration forms with the necessary medical forms and registration fees are due by July 20, A letter confirming registration and class assignment will be sent after the closing of registration by either U.S. mail or . The confirmation letter will include a set of prerequisites which MUST be completed and turned in at check-in Friday evening. Scouts MUST be able to pass the B.S.A. Blue Swim test and have medical forms that comply with B.S.A. summer camp requirements. Adults who submit valid health forms and pass the Blue Swim test will be allowed on the boats as time and space allow. The enclosed registration forms should be duplicated as needed. Youth registration is limited to the first fifty (50) qualified registrations received. EQUIPMENT CHECK LIST Each registrant needs to bring the following items to KSB > Swim Suit > Changes of Clothes > Sunglasses > Large beach towel > Personal hygiene gear > Sunscreen > Insect repellent > Tent (may be shared in accordance with B.S.A rules) > Sleeping bag and pad > Eating utensils > Merit book for assigned class > Hat Note: You may bring your own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) if desired. No electronic games, radios or TV s are allowed.
