2 It s December! From Jeramy I don t know about you, but that gets me excited. If you re thinking because of presents, then you are right! It also means that Kiowa County 4-H will be gearing up for another fantastic year. There are a lot of exciting events planned so please keep on top of your newsletters and agendas in the upcoming months so you don t miss out. Your brand new 4-H Council officer team is meeting this month to adopt a new budget and discuss plans for the year. We have some very enthusiastic leaders this year that are already working hard to make your experience with 4-H the best ever. Please plan on attending at least one council meeting this year and getting involved. That s all I really have for now. I want to encourage you to take advantage of your well-deserved break coming up. Every one of you has had a great, but exhausting, first semester at school with another quickly to come. Enjoy your family and friends this holiday season, and take a few deep breaths. Because come January 1, we re going to strap our boots on and make some things happen! Merry Christmas! Jeramy 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be Monday, Dec. 4 at 6:30pm, at the Extension Office. This meeting will include discussions on the budget and activities for the 2018 year! Prairie Queen Club Meetings The Prairie Queen Club will have their End of Year Celebration on Dec. 21st. You will meet at the hospital at 4:45 pm for some caroling, and then move to Prairie Pines by 5:30. After that everyone will meet at the Community Building between 6-6:30 for a Pot Luck Supper! ** Parents may drop food off at the Community Building anytime after 4:45 ** We are asking that if your name begins with: A to N: please bring a salad O to Z: please bring desserts Join us for a great time!! Changes for 2018: Remember Jeramy s Facebook challenge: there is a $50 award to the 4-Her that recruits the most new members! Talk it up! There are new project books for some projects, please check with us. Also there is a new Horse Rule Book for our horse riders! You can find a huge amount of information on the 4-H project website, check it out!

3 Considering New Projects in 2018? This is a time in your life when you can dare to try new things, so go for it! Remember that old saying, you will never know if you like it until you try it! 4-H has a lot more to offer than livestock projects, although raising livestock definitely has rewards. Please take the time to review the updated State 4-H project list and you can find out more on the website at If you have questions about any of the projects, please call us or talk to your Leaders. It s important to know what you are getting into, and also it might end up being much more interesting than you could imagine! And of course, projects require time. Right now the County Fair seems a far away thing, but if you wait to work on your projects until the last minute not only will you not complete it as well, but you will miss a huge learning experience. Please begin early, and learn how much more relaxing and enjoyable 4-H learning can be when you don t have to rush! New Council Officers! Congratulations to the new Kiowa County 4-H Council Officers for : Molly Stolzenberger - President Rooney Fehr - Vice President Hatch Nelson - Treasurer Emily Nelson - Secretary Chase Stolzenberger - Reporter Molly Stolzenberger - Senator Emily Nelson - Senator Rooney Fehr - Alternate Senator Gaige Arnold - Recreation Leader Zoie Arnold-Kraft - Recreation Leader Hailey Birt - Recreation Leader Selena Fehr - Recreation Leader Clayton Nelson - Recreation Leader Katherine Trosper - Recreation Leader Melissa Jones - Adult Leader Katharina Fehr - Adult Leader 4-H Record Book Tracker Amazing! You now have a way to keep track of your expenses, inventory and activities through the new 4-H Tracker App! This app will allow you to enter items at the time of purchase through any device that will access the internet. Also you will be able to track all the activities done throughout your projects. This tracker can be used for any 4-H project - what a great way to keep up to date on your e-records! To get started, go to: and click on Instructions where you will find step-by-step instructions on how to Create an Account and use the app. You will need to create an account first, and then get approved before you can start to enter information. Check These Out! There are two new tools you want to know about on our website! kiowa.extension.colostate.edu First is a new Extension Blog! Here you will find articles and information resources for agriculture, home and family and 4-H. You can use this blog to ask questions on any topic! Second is a Youth Market Livestock Profit Calculator. Borrowed from Washington State, this allows you to anticipate your profits early in the game. Please spend a few minutes looking at these, they are great resources! Leadership Development Conference The annual Leadership Development Conference (LDC) will be January 27-29, 2018 in Denver. If you are interested please contact the office to pre-register by January 9th. LDC is a fun, educational weekend promoting leadership development and community service. 5 Leadership Development Conference Sign up now for LDC and 4-H Day at the Capitol, January 27th-29th. Join senior 4-H members from across Colorado at this outstanding leadership event, then see our state government at work. The conference includes community service, workshops, awards banquet, and a dance. A morning at the state capitol and visits with legislators wraps up the event. Registration for the event is $170 plus hotel room. Remember some counties offer financial assistance for attendees. Participants will also need additional money for some meals. You must be 14 by Dec. 31, 2017 to attend. The Southeast Area registration deadline is January 4th, and is done through 4-H Online. Contact your local Extension office for more information. Youth Fest Youth Fest is a camp for youth ages 9-13 and is held each year at the Ponderosa Retreat and Conference Center in Larkspur. The camp is filled with activities, workshops, dances and great food. This year s camp will be February 9th-11th and is limited to the first 195 campers. Cost is tentatively $135 per camper. The registration deadline is January 26th. Registration is through 4-H Online. Camp fills up fast, so the sooner you register, the better. Information will be available soon from your local extension office. Camp Scholarships The District VI 4-H Senate has voted to provide scholarships for district 4-H members to attend state, regional, and district events. For Dare to Be You and Caballeros & Clovers 4-H Camps one scholarship will be offered for each county. For LDC, Youth Fest, District Retreat and State Conference two scholarship maximum will be offered for the whole district. A deposit for the registration amount will be held, but will only be deposited if the scholarship winner does not attend. Due dates for scholarships will be advertised in the newsletter. There is an application that must be completed. You can get the application from your local extension office. For LDC the scholarship application deadline is January 4th. For Youth Fest the scholarship application deadline is January 13th. 4-H Enrollment Again for 2017/2018 year we will be using the 4-H Online program to enroll members. 4-H Online is a secure database that has been in use for quite a few years now in Colorado. Families will need to login to the 4-H Online site and complete the enrollment process. All counties will be providing very specific instructions, but don t hesitate to ask for help. Also, if you do not have access to a computer or would like to have our help we can schedule a time to help you enroll at your Extension office. Members and volunteer leaders need to complete all parts of the online enrollment process, including adding online signatures for: Animal Care and Housing Form (if applicable) Permission to Participate Photo Denial (only check & sign if you don t want to allow photos) Code of Conduct Health Form. You will not have to print anything off UNLESS you are not housing your animals at your home in which case you will need to download and fill out the animal housing form and return to the Extension Office by the enrollment deadline. Counties may have county specific forms that you still must sign and turn in. To complete your enrollment, you must pay club fees as set by your county following the county process. Enrollment deadline is February 1 in Cheyenne County, March 1 in Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero and Prowers Counties. The Colorado State University 4-H Office has put together some excellent resources on 4-H Online. The link to these resources is 4H Online Blasts From time to time the State office will be sending s directly to the 4-H members. It is the easiest and most effective way to communicate important State events and requirements. We know that not everyone particularly enjoys the extra s and there have been requests to be unsubscribed. It is important to know that if you do that, you would not receive any re-enrollment s or information the County office sends directly to you. Please do not unsubscribe.

6 Welcome New SEA 4-H Agent Hello all! I am Abby Weber, and I m eager to serve you as your new Bent County Extension Agent. It is a thrill to be a part of the Southeast Area Peaks and Plains CSU Extension Team. I have a background in Environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology and Chemistry, and a Master s in Education. I have taught for a number of years in Southeast Colorado, so many of you already know me. It has helped, too that my husband is a livestock inspector in the southeast region, and we ranch in Bent County ourselves where we raise horses and cattle. It is exciting to know that we will both serve this agricultural community that we hold so dear. Not only are we current residents and patrons of this great region, but we will be here for so many years to come. Our two children attend school in McClave, and proudly participate in the 4-H program in Bent County. When I have free time, I love to cook, travel, read, and learn anything new that I can. I love to teach, and look forward to sharing with you what I know. I am excited to connect with all of you on behalf of the CSU Extension team to share my knowledge and excitement for what we can offer through Family and Consumer Science and the 4-H Youth Development Program! Thanks for welcoming me into this exciting opportunity, and all of the support that has come with this new adventure! Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Trainings The dates for the 2018 Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Trainings have been set. Approved leaders can register for these trainings through 4-H Online. See your local extension office for more information. Weld County - March 9th-11th Pueblo County - March 23rd-25th Arapahoe County - April 6th-8th Mesa County - April 13th-15th District VI Shooting Sports Contest Mark your calendars for the 2nd annual District VI 4-H Shooting Sports Contest. It will be Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at the La Junta Rifle Club. Meat Quality Assurance All 4-H members in breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits, dairy animal and horse projects must complete Meat Quality Assurance training the first two years they show livestock, and then again when they change age divisions. You may attend any MQA in the area; be sure to sign in and complete the quiz so your county will know you attended. The hands-on learning stations will be used again with changes in the stations. This is a come and learn-by-doing training that will take approximately an hour to complete. Parents and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. Times and locations will be announced in a future newsletter. Plan to attend one of these sessions: March 15th - Cheyenne County March 16th - Kiowa County March 19th - Baca County March 20th - Prowers County March 21st - Bent County March 22nd - Crowley & Otero Counties
