8 Gonzales County 4-H Food and Nutrition Project Opportunities In order to successfully complete a project in 4-H, you should set goals, seek out new learning experiences, and be able to identify at least six objectives you met. Participating in activities and competitions can help you work toward your goals. For example, if your goal is to learn how to make an apple pie, then learning to peel apples may be an objective. Learning why the apples turn brown and how to prevent them from turning brown might be another objective. If you participate in the Food Show, then you want your objectives to be focused on food preparation, food safety, and nutrition. You want to plan activities that give you the opportunity for community service/service learning and leadership. Contests: Food Show The Food Show will have new categories and a theme. The categories are: Protein, Fruits & Vegetables, and Grains & Dairy. The theme will be healthy holidays. The Food Show is an individual contest in which members prepare a dish in one of the contest categories and presents it to a panel of judges. During the presentation and interview with the judges, members exhibit the knowledge and skills gained through the 4-H Food and Nutrition Project, such as preparation steps, nutrients found in the dish, the functions of various ingredients, personal dietary needs, healthy substitutions, and cost analysis. Food Challenge The 4-H Food Challenge is a contest that allows 4-H members to demonstrate their culinary knowledge and skills. From a set of predetermined ingredients provided, teams of 3-5 members must develop a recipe and prepare the dish within 40 minutes. Teams then make a presentation to a judging panel, explaining the preparation steps, serving size, food safety concerns, nutrition value and cost of the dish. Dates and Deadlines: Food Show and Food Challenge packets are available in the Extension Office. You may also request to have a packet by ing Janie Pineda, at janie.pineda@ag.tamu.edu.
