We want to apologize for the lack of communication in There are absolutely no excusess for not completing and communicatingg with 4-H newsletters this year. It is not acceptable and we take full responsibility for this. We stood in frontt of all of you in January during our 4-H Kickoff and vowed to do better in communicating. We ended up doing the complete opposite and went backwards. We hope that you can all accept our apology. We are starting with this newsletter, to turn over a new leaf. We will make this one of our priorities starting from this day forward. We are going to work towards smaller newsletters more often and filling the time in between with reminders. We have included some important dates and reminders that will be beneficial for you and your club members to know from now until Kickoff. Sincerely, Andrea Daubenmier & Larry L. Hall

2 H Volunteer Kickoff Dates Set We are going to be offering more Volunteer Kickoff sessions in We will be offering three regular sessions and one new advisor training. Please remember that it is mandatory that you attend one of the Kickoffs. BRAND NEW VOLUNTEER KICKOFF SESSION This session will be designed for brand new volunteers for 2015 or ones who came in during the 2014 season. We will be going more in depth with all of the paperwork and the logistics behind our 4-H program. We realized that during our regularr sessions we take for granted that everyone knows what all of the paper work is about and understands our system. We feel that our brand new volunteers need us to take a different approach on kickoff. New volunteers for all you need to bring is a writing utensil. We will be providing each one of you with all of the appropriate paper work that you will need for the year. Volunteers from 2014 pleasee bring your club notebook from last year if you still have it. This session will be held at the OSU Extension Office located at 160 Columbus Road on Saturday, January 17 starting at 9 a.m. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! CLOVER CONNECTION REGULAR VOLUNTEER KICKOFF SESSIONS This year we will be holding THREE 4-H volunteer kickoff sessions. The first one will be Tuesday, January 20 starting at 6 p.m. The second will be Thursday, January 22 starting at 6 p.m. The third and final one will be on Saturday, February 7 starting at 9 a.m. You will need to bring your club notebooks and a writing utensil. The organizational advisor will get the all of the information for the club notebook. But a new feature this year iss that everyone will receivee a packet that has important information in it. That way, if club volunteers cannot all come together to one particular kickoff everyonee is still walking away with what they need in terms of information. All of these sessions will be held at the Memorial Building in the dining room downstairs. The Memorial Building is located at 112 E. High Street. KICKOFF TIMES & LOCATIONS New Advisor Session at OSU Extension Office ~ Saturday, January 9 a.m. Regular Sessionss at Memorial Building ~ Tuesday, January 6 p.m. ~ Thursday, January 6 p.m. ~ Saturday, February 9 a.m. 2 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION KNOX COUNTYY

4 Becoming a 4-H Volunteer Are you interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer? Here are the steps that you will need to work through in order for you to be considered. Contact the OSU Extension office to indicate an interest in becoming an Extension volunteer. Pay a $5.00 volunteer application fee to receive an application. The fee helps cover copying costs and postage for mailings to and from references and the applicant. Complete and submit the application and Standards of Behavior form. After receiving and reviewing an appropriate number of responses by references and the application, an interview with the applicant will be scheduled with at least two people from the program area (4-H, Master Gardeners, FCS, etc.) staff. After a successful first interview, the applicant will acquire and self-pay for a Webcheck report through Ohio BCI&I. Once all forms and reports are accepted and in the applicant's file, the applicant will be informed of their status as a volunteer for a one-year term which may be renewed at the discretion of the OSU Extension staff. This process needs to be STARTED AND COMPLETED before March 16, The process from start to finish should be no more than a month. Fingerprint Background Checks Fingerprint background checks are required before beginning service and every four years thereafter. Both the current and newly expanded Policy 1.50 require all OSU employees, students, and volunteers who work with minors in the course of their duties to have an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) fingerprint background check before they begin service, and every four years thereafter. If the employee/student/volunteer has not lived in Ohio for all of the last five years, they must also have a FBI fingerprint background check in addition to the Ohio BCI check. There is no more background check grandfathering. Therefore, every OSU Extension employee, student, and volunteer must have a BCI fingerprint background check on file, even those who were grandfathered without a background check in Each current adult volunteer in the 4HOnline system has been assigned a rescreening date based on their years of service (and if they ve had one recently, the date of their last BCI fingerprint background check). As of 10/1/14, all adult 4-H volunteers were assigned a last approved date: ; ; ; and These dates represent the 4-H programming year. Volunteers who have listed as their last approved screening date should have received a letter via the US Postal Service informing them they need to have a BCI fingerprint background check. The 4-H letter was sent from Tom Archer and Kirk Bloir from the State 4-H Office. We will accept the results of a fingerprint background check if the volunteer had an Ohio BCI fingerprint background check conducted within the past 12 months for a reason related to working with children, working with the elderly, or certain types of licensure. They must use the BCI request form ( and have BCI mail the report directly to the OSUE Fingerprint Background Check Coordinator. Note: if they are unsure if they can request a copy of a past report, they can contact the BCI Civilian Identification Department directly at The cost for these reports is $8.00. Results of the BCI fingerprint background check MUST be sent directly from BCI to the OSU Extension Fingerprint Background Check Coordinator. No BCI fingerprint background check reports should be sent to or kept by a county office. All reports should be mailed directly from BCI to OSU Extension at: OSU Extension Volunteer Background Check Coordinator 2201 Fred Taylor Drive Columbus, OH December 31, 2014 is the deadline all current volunteers with a last approved screening date of must obtain a fingerprint background check.
