6 Registration Procedures If you are interested in joining one or more of these programs, please complete the registration form. Please note: if you register your child in grades prekindergarten through grade 6 for a ½ day or 2-hour program, you may also register him/her for ½ day of Day-to-Day or Green Pond Day Camp. You need to submit a non-refundable $50 deposit per week for each participant for each program. You may also pay the fee in full at the time of registration. Should there be an insufficient number of students to run a particular program, you may have the deposit refunded to you or it can be applied to another program. The balance of the fee for each program is required by June 1, Any registration received after June 1, 2018 requires the full fee at the time of registration. Children participate in a variety of activities that include arts and crafts, swimming, and games. The Before Care program begins each morning, June 11-August 3 at 7:00 a.m. and runs until 9:00 a.m. The After Care program is offered from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Both sessions are offered Monday through Friday to children (entering prekindergarten through grade 6) already registered for the Day Camp or Enrichment Programs. There is a $5.00 per person per hour charge for before and after care. It is imperative that children are not dropped off before 7:00 a.m. and that they are picked up by 6:00 p.m. There is a $50 late fee for pickups after 6:00 p.m. There is no supervision prior to 7:00 a.m. We would like to have registration for the Before and After Care Programs in advance, and this should be indicated on the registration form. Before Camp Care is under the supervision of Mrs. Paulette Vuchko, assistant in Moravian Academy s Extended Care Program; the After Camp Care program is under the supervision of Ms. Melissa Hummel, prekindergarten teacher at Moravian Academy. 6

7 Day-to-Day Camp This full-day camp will be offered for students entering grades prekindergarten through grade 6. This program is different from the regular day camp and enrichment programs in that you may register your child for one day, two days, or all five days for each session. Students must bring their own lunches. Many activities are planned including drama, arts and crafts, games, field trips, and physical activities both outdoors and in the gymnasium. We ask that campers not wear sandals. This program will be held in Walter Hall on the Merle-Smith Campus from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. In addition to the program, before camp care will be available from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and after camp care will be available from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Miss Gabbey Stone will be directing the program again this year. She directed the Day-to-Day Camp program last year and was an assistant in Miss Gabbey Stone is also the director of Moravian Academy s Lower School Extended Care Program. Dates: Session I June Session II July Session III July 30-August 3 Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades: Students entering grades prekindergarten 6 Bring: Campers need to bring a lunch and beverage, a swimming suit and a towel. Campers are encouraged to bring a water bottle. Fee: $50 per day $200 per week Green Pond Day Camp Green Pond Day Camp meets daily, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., for students entering prekindergarten through grade 6. The camp runs as five independent one-week sessions. Each week revolves around a central theme and all of the children's activities arts and crafts, drama, music and field trips focus on the theme. Field trips are scheduled for each week, but depending on the weather, dates could possibly change. Campers also take part in sports and swimming. Certified lifeguards are on duty during all swimming activities. All children are tested on their swimming abilities. Campers are grouped by age or grade level. The counselors for Green Pond Day Camp are Mrs. Angela Emili, Miss Nicole Martins, and Miss Gabbey Stone. Mrs. Angela Emili teaches after-school programs at the Lower School. Miss Nicole Martins was a Green Pond Day Camp counselor in 2017 and in previous summers, the summer program lifeguard. Miss Gabbey Stone also directs Day-to-Day Camp and is the director of Moravian Academy s Lower School Extended Care Program. 7

10 Ceramics Camp: Working with Clay This two-week camp will get your creative energy flowing. We will be working in the Couch Art Building's Ceramics Studio. Campers will be making objects with clay using both hand-building techniques and throwing it on the potter's wheel. Week one's focus will be building the clay objects. Week two's goal will be glazing and decorating their surfaces. Campers can create clay pieces that are functional and/or purely sculptural. Let s get creative! Ms. Sue Maurer was bitten by the ceramics bug in her high school art classes and has been working with clay ever since. During the school year, she works with MA Upper School ceramics students. In the summer, she works with master ceramics artists learning new techniques to share! Are you in awe of all things embellished? Do you love to create? Would you like to make original designs you can use to personalize cards, picture frames, mirrors, or notebooks? Then this is the camp for YOU! Campers will learn the basics of working in a digital design space along with tips and techniques for making creations only they could have imagined. Mrs. Mackavage teaches math at the Middle School and is returning to Summer at the Academy after having served as a counselor for Green Pond Day Camp last year and having taught enrichment camps in previous years. 11 Inspired by Nature Spend a week getting inspired by nature! In this exciting camp, students will create several crafts and works of art inspired by the world around them. They will learn about land artists, the upcycle art movement, and how to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Our project time will be supplemented and inspired by nature walks, a field trip to a local wildlife sanctuary, and visits to our Upper School garden. I hope you can join us! 12 Summer Jazz at the Academy Summer Jazz at Moravian Academy is a day camp for instrumental music students interested in building their jazz performance skills. Students will spend the week in classes on jazz improvisation, jazz listening, ear training, jazz styles, and ensemble rehearsals. The week will end with a concert at Moravian Academy with New York City guest Jazz Artist and Bowling Green State University Jazz Studies Director David Bixler. Faculty members include Dr. Richard Fanning, Director of Instrumental Music at Moravian Academy; Steven Denny, New York City freelance jazz pianist; Mike Lorenz, guitarist/bassist and Moravian Academy alumnus, drummer Liam Zahm. Dates: June 18 - June 22 Times: 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Grades: Students entering grades 7-12 Fee: $200 Write Music [the Right Way]! Want to learn how to create music? Then this camp is for you! Campers learn to write music, using current industry-standard music-writing software, as well as developing and honing a solid foundation of music principles to be utilized in writing music. By the end of this weeklong course, you ll be able to write the tunes you hear in your head. Let s spend a week creating music! Ms. Chase Morrison s graduate degree in music composition is from Westminster Choir College. She also is a professional cellist, conductor, and music educator at Moravian Academy and Westminster Conservatory. Her musical compositions have been commissioned and performed by Cornell University, Westminster Choir College, Dance Theatre Workshop, and Symphony Space in New York, among others. 14 Spanish Immersion A aprender, jugando! (Let's learn, playing!) This exciting Spanish Immersion summer day camp is open to children entering kindergarten through grade 6 in the school year. Starting on the first day, campers will be spoken to in Spanish and will spend their days learning, exploring, and playing- all while learning to react and respond in the target language. Campers participate in outdoor activities, swimming, arts and crafts, music, games, and other educational activities during their immersion experience. Parents can choose to enter children for one, two, or all three weeks of the program. Each week will have a different theme to guide the activities that take place. We look forward to seeing you! This program is directed by Mr. Marc Yerrington. Señor Yerrington is the third grade Spanish Immersion teacher at Moravian Academy. Whether your child is entering the 7 th or 8 th grade, we will focus on skills that will help the student to not only retain but also to solidify and strengthen basic skills. Material covered will relate to specific topics, but we will work mostly on Reading, Writing, Listening, and especially, Speaking. We will do this through a variety of improvisational and skit activities that engage students. This program will be taught by Mr. Gonzalo del Real. Mr. del Real is a Spanish teacher at Moravian Academy s Upper School and is a veteran Summer Program counselor. 15 Winter in July?! The winter holidays are a busy time of the year. Let s slow down during these lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer to relish the secular side of the most wonderful time of the year. We ll explore some of the beloved customs and traditions that make this season so merry and bright. Come join us as we delve into the origin of such things as gingerbread houses, ugly sweater contests, holiday crackers, and light displays. We ll serve up hot cocoa, decorate cookies, learn to make a perfect snowflake, and so much more during this fun-filled and festive week! Mrs. Dani Mackavage will lead this camp. Mrs. Mackavage teaches math at the Middle School and is returning to Summer at the Academy after having served as a counselor for Green Pond Day Camp last year and having taught enrichment camps in previous years. Dates: July Times: Morning session for students entering grades 3-4: 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Afternoon session for students entering grades 5-6: 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Fee: $175 per session English and History Cartography Lab: Mapping the World By Heart The International Cartographic Association defines cartography as the discipline dealing with the conception, production, dissemination, and study of maps. Cartography is also about representation the map. This means that cartography is the whole process of mapping. (Canadian Cartographic Association) This hands-on cartography lab experience will allow participants to explore various types of maps humans have created, as well as utilizing pencil and ink for an intensive application of cartography skills by mapping the world by heart. Skills focus include geographic resource interpretation, identifying map projections and specific use for each, location through utilizing latitude and longitude, scale ratio, and precise map construction with a thorough continent by continent and region by region development. Students will learn to develop skills that can be used for the rest of their lives like persistence and patience, cooperation, problem-solving, decision-making, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment with ownership of their finished product. Additionally, the learning environment will also encourage positive student collaboration and interaction, exploration of global awareness, and the use of creative art for their uniquely designed border. This cartography lab will be facilitated by Mr. Nicholas Lucas. Mr. Lucas is the 6th grade Middle School Social Studies teacher. In addition to holding a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Moravian College, Mr. Lucas has real-world experience in the areas of geography, 15

16 cartography, and military intelligence with a focus on East Africa, the Middle East, the Subcontinent of India and Indian Ocean, and Southeast and East Asia. Dates: June Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades: Students entering grades 6-9 Fee: $250 Readers Workshop Looking to boost your child s interest and confidence with reading? Following Lucy Calkins Readers Workshop model, campers will spend the week working to improve their fluency, accuracy and comprehension skills. Lessons will be presented in four ways: 1.) Whole group instruction, where we will cover topics such as smart book selections, making connections with the text, asking clarifying questions and building vocabulary. 2.) Individual conferencing, where students will meet one-on-one with the instructor to review goal setting and to check comprehension. 3.) Independent reading time, where students will practice reading independently to build fluency and increase reading stamina. 4.) Peer-to-peer work, where students will work with a buddy to make predictions about texts, reflect on the lesson of the day, and present book reviews and recommendations. ***Students must be able to read independently.*** This camp will be run by Mrs. Courtney Zemsky. Mrs. Zemsky is an experienced classroom teacher having taught students in pre-k, kindergarten, and elementary grades. She has a BA in philosophy and Religion, an MA in Educational Leadership and is an AMI certified Montessori Primary teacher. Drawing on her Montessori background and responsive classroom techniques, her hands-on style blends whole group instruction with small group work and individual conferencing with each student. She has been trained in Lucy Calkins Readers and Writers Workshop, and she loved using these research-based methods in her classroom. During this week, we ll put technology aside and get back to basics as we learn such things as how to sew on a button, write a handwritten note and address an envelope, set both an informal and formal table, and use essential hand tools. Creative drama, fun group activities, and storytelling will be used to jump-start students imaginations and their writing. Students will write daily, participate in-group and one-on-one workshops, and share in-group discussions. Areas covered will include practice in the expository modes of writing, word processing, and keyboard work, and emphasis on the whole process of writing, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. We will focus on expository modes of writing (narration, process analysis, description, and persuasion) and will work on daily exercises to hone our skills in descriptive and sensory writing. We will read Book I of Dexter and The Dragon Spell and complete a character analysis essay at the end of our workshop in a book conference with the author. If students have already read Book I of Dexter and The Dragon Spell, Books II and III of the Dexter series will be available. This workshop is taught by Dr. Catherine Moore. Dr. Moore is a Moravian Academy Upper School English Teacher and has taught at Moravian Academy for six years. In addition to holding a Ph.D. in English Literature, Dr. Moore has a Master s degree in Theatre, with a concentration in Theatre History from Northwestern University and a Master of Studies postgraduate degree in Research Methods in English Literature from the University of Oxford. 18 Writers Workshop We ve all got a story to tell. This Writers Workshop will help campers explore the world of being an author and publishing their own story! Following Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop model, campers will learn how to: look at books as mentor texts, cultivate their own ideas for writing, add detail and interest to their stories and edit their work. This two-week workshop will culminate with a publishing party in which friends and family will be invited to join us, as all authors share their finished products and show off their writing skills! Please note: campers are permitted to sign up for the first week only, although it means they will not publish a story. This camp will be run by Mrs. Courtney Zemsky. Mrs. Zemsky is an experienced classroom teacher having taught students in pre-k, kindergarten, and elementary grades. She has a BA in philosophy and Religion, an MA in Educational Leadership and is an AMI certified Montessori Primary teacher. Drawing on her Montessori background and responsive classroom techniques, her hands-on style blends whole group instruction with small group work and individual conferencing with each student. She has been trained in Lucy Calkins Readers and Writers Workshop, and she loved using these research-based methods in her classroom. His designs have inspired a movement of artists who create their own cause and effect machines. This exciting program will give participants the opportunity to create kinetic sculptural designs that encourage teamwork, experimentation, and humor. In other words, we will spend a week making complicated machines that do simple things! This camp will be directed by Brian Elstein and Brad Pomeroy. In addition to teaching and reinforcing all of the basic fundamentals of the game, this camp will feature a wide variety of skills and game competitions to keep things up-tempo and fun. Coach Polgar is the Head Coach of the Upper School Girls Basketball program, and Coach Brennan has been an assistant coach to the program as well. Camp days are designed to promote the learning of techniques and skills while focusing on the individual player. The curriculum will provide an accelerated series of training sessions that will enhance the player s proficiency in technique and tactics. Goalkeeper specific training will also be included before joining field players in training and matches for game simulation. The Soccer Academy and Advanced Player Camp are directed by Mr. Bob Hartman, Moravian Academy s Head Boys Soccer Coach. Mr. Hartman was named Soccer Coach of the Year for 2011 by The Express-Times. He was named National Private High School Coach of the Year for 2014 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He will be assisted by Fernando Carrizo, Moravian Academy s Upper School Assistant Varsity Soccer Coach. Mr. Carrizo is the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Assn. This camp will consist of skills training, hockey drills, and scrimmage time. Ms. Danaher is a teacher and coach at Moravian Academy. She was formerly the head field hockey coach at Southern Connecticut State University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Ms. Danaher played Division I field hockey at the University of Connecticut and has earned gold medals in the Keystone and Nutmeg State Games. In addition, she has coached Keystone Games, Junior Olympics, and worked as a head coach and site director for the USFHA Futures program. 26 Moravian Academy Tennis Academy The camp is designed for players of all ability levels interested in improving tennis skills and gaining that competitive advantage through small group instruction on-court and off-court strategy sessions. All players are evaluated the first day of camp and placed in competitive groups to maximize their tennis camp experience. Your time on-court will be filled with a combination of group instruction, match play, and one-on-one instructional opportunities to really help you achieve your tennis goals. The goals for the week are to make the camp fun for all players, to instill good sportsmanship, to inspire commitment to the sport and to teach sound stroke mechanics. The weeklong clinic stresses fundamentals in tennis: footwork, stroke production, strategy, and match play. Each day there will be challenging drills, fun games, and match competitions. The Moravian Academy Tennis Camp is taught by PTA professional and varsity boys tennis coach Tom Schoeninger and USPTA professional Rick Brown, head girls coach. Tom Schoeninger has been the head boys tennis coach at Moravian Academy for twenty years. His boys teams have won 16 Colonial League Championships, 17 District Championships, and two PIAA Championships. He has also coached four doubles teams to state championships and was the recipient of the Edwin Faulkner award for USTA Middle States Coach of the year. Rick Brown is a USPTA certified pro. He taught tennis for five years for the USTA in Las Vegas where he mentored Division 1 tennis students. He has been the MA boys assistant coach for 6 years and girls varsity coach for three years.
