1 Thank you for your interest in SummerQuest 2018! SummerQuest provides students of all ages an opportunity to engage in programs focusing on academics, athletics, and the arts. We are thrilled to offer a variety of courses and camps to fill your summer with growth, enrichment, and fun! At SummerQuest, we are always growing and improving, so be certain to check out the many new courses that have been added to our catalog. We hope you will be a part of SummerQuest 2018, as there are many unique opportunities for children to enhance their God-given abilities and learn new skills. The First Academy is conveniently located just off of Interstate 4 and John Young Parkway on the campus of First Baptist Church of Orlando. SummerQuest faculty includes experienced educators, professional instructors, and talented coaches who work together to provide a memorable experience for all participants. 3 General Information REGISTRATION SummerQuest offers online registration and payment. Please visit our website at to register for courses. After registering online, all participants must also complete our medical information form. You can complete it online, send it in via mail, or bring it to campus by the first day of camp. This form requires a parent signature and is found on the next page of this brochure. Please return the medical form to: The First Academy 2667 Bruton Blvd. Orlando, FL Attn: SummerQuest Deadline for online registration is Friday, May 18, 2018 at 3:00pm. Any registration received after May 18th will be charged a $10 late fee. COURSE FEE The course fee must be paid in full to reserve your spot in the course. After paying online, complete the medical form that is located online on the registration page. REFUND POLICY The student will receive a full refund minus expenses incurred (T-shirt, etc.) if withdrawing from a program before Friday, May 18, No refunds will be made after this date. If a student is asked to leave the course or camp for disciplinary reasons, no refund will be given. We understand that unforeseen circumstances do arise. However, in order to staff our camps and to ensure the camp programs offered are available to those who registered, there are no exceptions. CANCELLATION & WITHDRAWAL The First Academy reserves the right to cancel any program if there is insufficient enrollment. The designated participation minimum is listed under each course description. All fees will be refunded in the event that the course minimum is not met. This application is made with the understanding that The First Academy reserves the right to request withdrawal of any student whose conduct, influence, attendance, or progress is regarded as undesirable or unsatisfactory, or who fails to conform to rules and regulations. No refund will be made to any student who withdraws or is dismissed from SummerQuest after the program has begun. DRESS CODE The dress code for SummerQuest is casual but conservative. For sports camps please wear proper athletic clothes and footwear. Uniforms are not required during the summer. 5 Adaptive Camp The Therapy Camp The Therapy Camp will be organized and ran by a certified & licensed speech/language therapist, occupational therapist/assisstant and a registered behavior technician with experience in helping children socially succeed. Your child will work on: - Enhancing their social pragmatics - Conversational skills - Turn taking/cooperative play skills - Eye contact/empathy - Fine and gross motor coordination - Being a good friend - Being successful in a group environment - Impulse control Purpose: The goal of this camp is to allow children in grades K-12 with special needs to enjoy a fun camp experience with highly trained professionals to support their individual needs. Our campers will engage in group activities to promote their social skills, self control, language, and motor skills. Space is available for a minimum of 12 individuals with special needs who would benefit from group instruction and social emotional support. Campers need to be: - Fully potty trained - Able to communicate basic wants/needs - Able to function in a group environment - Able to transition with minimal diffculty The camp requires a minimum of 12 children to run. 9 K4-Story Stretcher: Rainbow Fish Join us for an adventurous week of water play, special cooking activity, and arts and crafts. We will be patterning, sequencing, counting, and "reading" color words. We will be getting ready for K-Prep by learning classroom routines and will even take a tour of the Lower Bchool building (Clinic, Art, Music, and Spanish rooms). The kids will build their fine motor skills by using scissors, painting, and shaping play dough into sea creatures. We will take a "field trip" to the beach without even leaving the classroom. The kids will have fun "fishing," collecting shells, and making sand castles. Minimum class size is 6 students. We will use literature each day as a springboard for exciting activities involving reading, writing, math, science, and art. We will review Kindergarten skills and preview what First Grade at TFA is like. We will play games, create, and learn as we work cooperatively and prepare for the upcoming school year. Students will be given the opportunity to review essential skills for success in Kindergarten. The focus will include activities related to letter sounds and recognition, reading readiness and comprehension, number awareness and recognition, fine motor skills, and oral language. Each day will feature a different on-campus field trip to allow students to become more familiar with the TFA campus. Minimum class size is 8 students. Students will practice school skills such as reading, writing, math, art, and fine motor skills through fun and creative activities. Allowing children the opportunity to imagine, plan, and create is an important step in the learning process. As children fuel their natural curiosity, they engage in an important discovery process that leads to the development of problem solving, fine motor agility, and the ability to collaborate. 11 Sensational Science In Sensational Science Camp, we will observe, touch, change, and alter things around us to discover what happens. God made an AMAZING world and it is fascinating to explore the things He has given to us. Each day, we will focus on a different topic and do two to three different experiments. Come join the FUN! This course is geared toward rising 2nd and 3rd grade students. Get ready to practice, review, and expand the skills you will need in the next grade level. Nobody wants to spend Summer doing boring worksheets by themselves! In Summer Sizzle, we ll explore Math, Reading, Science, and other foundational skills through games and interactive cooperative learning. You will have the opportunity to practice the skills you'll need for your new grade level as you participate in game play, art, and stem activities. You ll be having so much fun, you might not even realize you are learning. Camp includes a daily snack time and opportunities to get a jump start on Summer reading. 12 Direct TV Show - Project Based Learning Students will produce a TV show! Television shows don't just magically appear on our TV screens. They might look easy, but it's because of incredible amounts of work and preparation put into each episode. During this camp students will develop an idea, write the scripts, and then design the sets. Students will make a television production using their writing, math (area, perimeter), imagination, creativity, and technology skills. We will decorate cupcakes, dip treats in chocolate, make snacks, and create yummy gifts for others. Each day we will touch on the joy of hospitality and the blessing it is to share that with others. 13 4th Grade...Here We Come! Calling all rising 4th-grade students! Gather your friends and come get a jump-start on the upcoming school year! By the end of the week, students who attend will have read the required chapter book, completed the summer reading project, and previewed the 4th-grade math curriculum. Start racking up your AR Points and making gains towards becoming a "millionaire." Come get a head start on what could be a challenging academic year. 14 Athletics Camps Baseball - Session I The TFA baseball summer camp will focus on players learning and refining the fundamental skills needed to play the great game of baseball. Daily instruction will focus on individual aspects of the game, mental approach to the game, and the understanding of team philosophies. Drill instruction will include hitting, throwing, pitching, fielding, base running, and proper warm-up techniques. Each day, campers will also compete in individual skills as well as game situations. The camp instruction staff will consist of the varsity baseball staff at TFA. Players should wear baseball appropriate clothing, and bring their own gloves, bats, and cleats daily. 15 Football The TFA summer football camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game. These fundamentals include proper footwork, catching skills, throwing skills, blocking skills, tackling skills, and sportsmanship. Each day will include individual instruction and sportsmanship training, along with team and individual competition. The camp coaches will include TFA varsity football players and TFA varsity coaches. Children will receive instruction in a competitive environment that will allow them to improve their skills and have fun. There will be a daily spiritual emphasis and an awards ceremony that parents may attend on the last day of camp. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt at the end of the week. Players will need to wear cleats, shorts, and an athletic shirt each day. Competitions include: punting, passing, kicking, catching, team competition, and obstacle course competition. Learn proper motions and technique, jumps, cheers, dance/tumbling, and basic stunt technique. Cheerleaders will also enjoy fun games and activities. At the end of the week, we will have a performance for family and friends. This youth cheerleading camp will be taught by former TFA Cheerleader and TFA teacher Ashley Rowley. 16 Coed Basketball K-2nd Grade The TFA summer basketball camp focuses on the fundamentals of the game including shooting techniques, defensive techniques, passing, ball handling, and rebounding. Each day will include individual instruction along with team and individual competitions. The coaches include the TFA boys coaching staff as well as players from each of the teams. Your child will improve their basketball skills and abilities in a competitive environment that features a daily spiritual emphasis. We will end each week with an awards ceremony that parents may attend on the last day of camp. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt and ball. Gym clothes and gym shoes are required. Concessions are available for purchase during breaks. 30 Personal Training This summer, TFA's Strength Coach, Jessica Kenning, is offering personal training sessions for anyone looking for a more personalized training regimen. One hour sessions will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Once registered for your desired number of sessions through the SummerQuest form online, you will receive access to the sign-up log and be able to select an available time that works best for your schedule. Along with your one-on-one training with Coach Jess you will receive weekly workout plans and personalized health/fitness tracking. 31 Fine Arts Camps 101 Dalmatians Production Camp This class is designed to help 4th-9th-grade students express their creativity and develop their artistic talents while implementing theatrical terms, staging, and acting. The students will rehearse 101 Dalmatians, Disney s classic animated tale of kidnapping villains and courageous puppies adapted in this "fur-tastic" musical adventure, with a culminating performance on Friday.
