Katie Barker of Lynn received The Daily Item scholarship, Jessica Natti of Gloucester received the R&L Associates, Inc. scholarship and Christina Siebertz of Ipswich received the Atlantic Referral Exchange Lynn BNI Chapter scholarship. 2 Tolerance in a Time of Intolerance will be the theme of NSCC s 26th Forum on Tolerance, Thursday, November 4, 6:45-8:45 p.m. The forum, which is free and open to the public, will be held at NSCC's Lynn Campus gym, 300 Broad St., Lynn. NSCC will celebrate the compassion and moral courage of Chiune Sugihara, pictured left, a Japanese diplomat who served as the Consul in Lithuania at the beginning of World War II. Sugihara, who despite being forbidden to do so by the Japanese government, signed exit visas for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany's persecution. By following his conscience and disobeying his government, Sugihara saved the lives of 6,000 Jews. Rabbi Reuven Cohn, right, whose parents were among those saved by Sugihara, is the featured speaker at this year's Forum. He is an instructor at the Hebrew College and Maimonides School in Boston. The Honorable Toyohisa Kozuki, Consul General of Japan in Boston, will also speak. Excerpts from the video, Sugihara: Conspiracy of Kindness, will be shown and the international choral group, Chorus Boston, will give a musical performance of Japanese songs. SMART Retirement & Beyond Seminars - A retirement planning seminar series for Massachusetts State Employees sponsored by State Treasurer Timothy Cahill, the State Retirement Board, and the Deferred Compensation SMART Plan is coming to North Shore Community College. The seminar will take place at the Frederick Berry Building Cafeteria, October 28, 2010 from 6 to 8 PM. The seminar is designed to provide you with information and tools needed to help you achieve a financially secure retirement. Representatives from the Social Security Administration and the Group Insurance Commission will join the presentation and be available to answer questions. 3 North Shore Technology Council Networking Event - On the evening of October 13th, NSCC hosted a Networking event with the North Shore Technology Council (NSTC) at the Danvers campus. The North Shore Technology Council (NSTC) is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization with a mission to build a community for interaction, collaboration, and advancement of technology business in Massachusetts' north-of- Boston region. Both of these fact sheets are attached to this Bulletin. Thank you! --Disability Services Volunteers And Donations Needed For Annual Children s Halloween Party, Oct. 30 The Children s Halloween party is an annual event that Program Council and Student Life have put on for over a decade as part of National Make a Difference Day. We usually draw around 300 children. The party will take place on Saturday, October 30th from 1-3 p.m. at the Lynn Campus gym. Setup will take place about 10 a.m. There will be activities ranging from a reptile show, to performers, to games and prizes. This event is free and open to any child 10 years of age or under. Children must be pre-registered and accompanied by an adult who will remain with them throughout the event. 4 Cummings Foundation Faculty Fellowships Service with a communitybased organization. Full- and part-time faculty members who are interested in working with the community have the opportunity to develop a service project with a local community-based organization and complete a 40-hour fellowship over the Spring 2011 semester. Fellowships include a $1,200 stipend. Deadline is November 19, Please contact Cate Kaluzny, ckaluzny@northshore.edu or at x5571/2148 for a Fellowship application and for any questions regarding this opportunity. $30,000 Transfer Scholarship Now Available - The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened the nomination process for the largest scholarships available to students and recent alumni from community colleges. The private foundation will award up to $30,000 annually per recipient to help students and recent alumni from community colleges pursue four-year degrees at any college or university in the United States. In order to be eligible for nomination a student should have a minimum GPA of 3.5, be graduating in May, or be a recent alumni, and plan to enroll full-time in September 2011 at a four-year college or university. The winners of the new Ipod Nanos were student Angela Panevino, right, and Cheryl Blundell, left, facilities. --Victoria Pasciuto, Coordinator of Student Activities Mid-Semester Smart Classroom Trainings - Academic Technology has planned a couple of midsemester Smart Classroom Trainings, for those who did not have the opportunity to attend a training at the start of the semester. The sessions will focus on how to best setup your classroom for teaching and learning using technology. We'll also take a look at applications available in the classroom, who/where to call if any issues occur, and end with individualized instruction, allowing you to try any applications or hardware in the room. 5 Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) - The TAC Committee invites all full-time and adjunct faculty and all professional teaching staff to submit applications to develop a Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) project in the spring of 2011 with implementation in the summer or fall of This year we are making a few changes to the TAC process. First, we moved the application dates to earlier in the semester to avoid the end-of-semester rush. Fall application materials are being distributed in October, and proposals are due at midnight on November 22. Second, we have split TAC into two parts. 1. If you would like to develop an online/hybrid course: Please contact Julie Riley (jriley@northshore.edu) or John McCormick (jmccormi@northshore.edu. They will explain the process and discuss the expectations, have you complete some short readiness activities, and give you an application. You will also need to discuss your plans with, and get the approval of, your Division Dean. Applications and Process are available during your consultation with the Instructional Designers, John McCormick or Julie Riley 2. If you would like to develop a project integrating technology into the curriculum: Apply for a TAC grant. The application, which includes project ideas, and the description of the TAC Process are attached to the bulletin. Please read all of the materials before completing your application. Division Deans and Department Chairs would appreciate an letting them know about your ideas so they can support your efforts. Applications must be submitted via to tacapp@northshore.edu by Monday, November 22, No late applications will be accepted under any circumstances. Notification of awards will be made before the end of the semester. Please note: These application materials are also available on Pipeline. Applicants need not have high level experience using technology, but because the TAC grant is becoming highly competitive, we urge applicants to prepare their applications carefully, making sure the descriptive narrative is thorough and clear. We are also, of course, interested in the applicant s motivation and willingness to think about how technology can improve his/her teaching. Finally, we would be delighted to answer any questions or discuss application ideas. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day 60 mile Walk. This year I walked in San Francisco. I m pictured second from the left, along with my nephew Mark, far right, who lives in the Bay area along with his children, Miriam and Sam. My 6 months of training, trekking all over the north shore, really paid off as I encountered numerous weather changes and very daunting hills on each of the three days. I was able to complete the Walk and have so far raised over $7,000 for this worthy cause, putting an end to breast cancer. One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease which has affected many in our NSCC community. It is the number one cause of death in women world-wide. The NSCC community has been very generous, and I very much appreciate your support. My website will remain up for the duration of October, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 7 Reading Girl Scouts Operation Undercover-Troop A Community Service Project for Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (Cradles To Crayons) Girl Scout Troop of Reading is trying to collect 1,000 pairs of new socks and underwear for MA children living in low-income families and/or who are homeless. Donations will be taken now through December 31 st. We are asking friends, neighbors, family members and co-workers to help out! Please drop off or send your donations of new children s (all sizes) socks and underwear to Jane Trullo in Student Financial Services, Danvers. We walk in memory of my cousin, Shaun Connolly, who lost his battle with Leukemia in 1989 at just 9yrs old. We have fundraisers throughout the year for the Relay which helps fund cancer research and treatment. I am currently taking orders for Ice Cream Pies (made by Scoops n' More of Peabody) that will be ready in time for Thanksgiving. Flavors are Chocolate Chip, Mocha, Oreo, Peppermint and new this year, Pumpkin! Pies cost $15/each and $5 of every order is donated to the American Cancer Society. Our team gets credit for all the pies that we sell. Orders and payment must be received by November 3rd. Checks should be made payable to the American Cancer Society in the full amount of $15/pie.
