The purpose of this newsletter is to keep our graduates and transfers informed on upcoming workshops, provide application assistance, provide you tips and information, remind you of deadlines and things to complete as a graduate and/or transfer student. Our goal as SSS TRiO staff is to help you reach your academic goal of graduating from Napa Valley College and/or transferring on to a four-year institution. Along the way, you may encounter unique issues with your application process to a four-year institution. Please don t hesitate to ask for help so that we can assess your situation and assist you. This dinner event is hosted by SSS TRiO staff and we celebrate the achievements of our SSS TRiO graduates who have achieved a degree and/or certificate and students whom are transferring to a four-year institution. SSS TRiO students receive a SSS TRiO Graduation Medallion and a Certificate of Excellence at our ceremony. In addition, it becomes a proud moment when we see you walk that commencement stage at the end of the spring semester at the Napa Valley College Commencement Ceremony. 4 Graduation Section STEP ITEM TO COMPLETE DEADLINE STEP 1 Reserve your seat for the Petition Graduation Workshop provided by Martin Olguin. (i.e. Associates Degree, Associates Science Degrees, AA-T Degree, AS-T Degree) Workshops in August! Reserve your seat now! STEP 2 Complete and submit your Petition for Graduation. TIP: Make a copy for your records! Submit your completed petition to Admissions & Records DEADLINE: October 23 STEP 3 Be sure that you follow your Graduation Petition (i.e. remaining courses still need to complete) (passing your classes) Fall / Spring STEP 4 Check your for the status of your graduation petition, if it has been approved. January / February STEP 5 Reserve your seat for the Petition for Certificate of Achievements (CSU or IGETC) Workshop January Workshops STEP 6 Complete and submit your Petition for Certificate of Achievement. TIP: Make a copy for your records! February STEP 7 The Napa Valley College Graduates List will be posted to the Student Services Website in April. Be sure to review the list for your name and the degree(s) and/or certificate(s) you have petitioned. 10 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) Workshops Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) Filing Period Sept th Can only do one TAG UC Berkeley, UCLA, & UC San Diego do not accept TAG's Must have 30 transferable units completed by Summer 2015 Must report all course work at all institutions Must meet GPA requirement Some Majors have specific requirements and/or specific GPA requirement s 10
11 UC Personal Statement... UC Application process is open beginning Aug 1! However, cannot submit until Nov 1-30th. What you will need to provide with the submission of your UC Application is a personal statement. Personal Statement Prompts Question # 1 What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement. Question #2 Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? 1000 words TOTAL Personal Statement workshops are available through the Transfer Center. See workshop section in this guide for dates. 11
12 Applying to Private Schools... Private School Application Deadlines Vary by School Some will let you apply directly at their websites Others will want you to submit the Common Application: Very important to research these and find out deadlines because some will have scholarships you can apply for directly at their financial aid offices websites. Some Examples of Private Schools: Dominican University Pacific Union College in Angwin For a list of private institutions, visit: 12
13 Transfer TIPS Review your deadlines Read EVERYTHING CAREFULLY! Stay organized with a folder Create an account specifically for transfer Check your on a DAILY basis Questions? Come in and ask for help! 13

Must check on a regular basis Consider creating an new only for school applications (yahoo is not a good to have) Create accounts (primarily CSU's) Check accounts on a weekly basis To-Do list via your CSU or University login Application Status Review Admissions Offers and Financial Aid Packages Housing Attend Orientation Accept Offer Send Final Transcript Certify your general education. (IGETC or CSU) Financial Aid Very important that you submit it by March 2 nd Be involved in parents tax process so you know what is going on Encourage them to get it done as early as possible You may also need to do your own taxes if you work Three weeks from the date taxes are submitted you must try to link your info to the IRS Database The process is not different from what you have done here at NVC for fin aid. 14
