Records Stop 4 Tuesday, August 16, :30 to 8 p.m. The Awards and Recognition Committee will be providing one-on-one assistance to 4-H members for their Standards of Excellence (different colored sheets that are given with the project books) and the Illinois Award Application. All 4-H members are welcome to bring the start of their records to the workshop to ask questions. Please bring a flash drive or your own laptop to save your work. This workshop will be held at the McLean County Extension Office. AG & NATURAL RESOURCES What To Do With Your Fragrant Herbs Wednesday, August a.m. There is nothing better than the aroma of fresh lavender when walking through the garden. Learn what do with these fragrant herbs outside the garden to enjoy the scents all year long. This workshop will be held at the Illinois State University Horticulture Center located on Rabb Road in Normal (north of the University Golf Course and across the road from Heartland Community College). All classes are outdoors and subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. Please bring your own lawn chair. Explore the World of Daylilies Tuesday, August 23 6:30 p.m. Please join the Woodford County Master Gardeners to explore the world of daylilies, taught by Heart of Illinois Daylily Society. Daylilies, known for their lovely trumpet-shaped florets, are easy to grow and are suitable for all types of landscapes in Illinois. Beyond the basic care and maintenance of daylilies, experience the incredible choice of colors, patterns and forms now available; from classic "ditch lilies" to elegant double-blooming varieties, all in colors of lavender, red, orange, yellow and everything in between. 2 Illinois Native Pollinators Webinar Tuesday, August 23 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 25 6:30 p.m. University of Illinois Extension's Four Seasons Gardening program focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening and back yard food production. When it comes to pollination, honey bees get a majority of the attention. However, many insects play a role in pollination. Join University of Illinois Extension Educator Ken Johnson as he discusses native pollinators. Ken will discuss different native pollinators and how to attract them to your landscape. Registration link for log-in on home computer: Once registered, participants will receive a confirmation with information on connecting from home. Handouts and webinar instructions will also be included. This is the last webinar in the summer series. The fall series will begin September Premiere - McLean County Barn Quilt Heritage Tour Saturday, August a.m. The Barn Quilt Heritage Trail of McLean County s opening event will be held at the David Davis Mansion Historic Site, 1000 Monroe Dr., Bloomington. Admission is free and coffee and donuts will be available. Twelve new quilts were created for the 2016 season. A tour book is available to provide travelers with a brief history of each site, plus a poem written by a local poet, for each quilt. Each year, an updated tour book is published and distributed at the opening events at the David Davis Mansion. A map is included with detailed driving instructions, and committee members occasionally provide step-on-guide tours for bus groups. Words on Quilts, original poems about McLean County quilts are written by local published poets. They will share those poems at 10:15 a.m. An auction of 2x2-foot barn quilts will follow the poetry reading. For more information, please visit Corn Breeding for Low Input Systems September 9-10 Frank Kutka is the assistant director of the Dickinson Research Extension Center in North Dakota and founder of the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society Farm Breeding Club. Frank will visit the University of Illinois on September 9-10 to present his research on breeding a yellow dent corn variety that carries a Ga1s allele, which confers gametophytic incompatibility that reduce transgenic contamination of organically produced corn. On September 9, he and others will speak at a campus workshop designed to raise awareness of the potential for regionally adapted grain (corn, soybeans, dry beans and wheat) to serve growing local markets. This workshop will be held at the Funk ACES Library, 1101 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana. On September 10, Frank will be the guest speaker at a Field Day in Danforth, IL organized by the Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture Program and University of Illinois Extension. He will share his experiences breeding corn for low input systems, conduct field evaluations, and provide guidance to farmers engaged in on-farm selection trials where his corn and other varieties are being tested. Harold Wilken, his son Ross, and several employees manage 2300 acres in Iroquois County. After 23 years, they made the switch from conventional farming to organic in 2003, and are now moving to access local food-grade markets. Details are forthcoming and likely to include management strategies of Wilken's diverse organic acreage. They will also give an update on the farm's commercial-scale mill that will help drive organic grain production in the region. The farm is located at 854 E 2300 N, Danforth, IL. Autumnal Festival Herb Garden Demos Saturday, September 17 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join the fun at Illinois State University Horticulture Center s Autumnal Festival! Enjoy family activities,

3 purchase homegrown pumpkins and gourds, get lost in the corn maze and take a hay ride. A variety of herbal demonstrations will be presented by the Herb Garden throughout the day. Advance registration is not necessary, however there is a nominal fee to enter the Autumnal Festival. North Woods Wildlife Excursion: Wolves, Bears, and Raptors Oh My! September Join the Illinois Grand Prairie Master Naturalists for an excursion to Ely, Minnesota, and northern Wisconsin. Relax and take in the anticipated full fall color for four days and three nights, with stops at the International Wolf Center, North American Bear Center, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory (Duluth, MN), International Crane Foundation Aldo Leopold Foundation (Baraboo, WI). We'll discuss which foods supply the nutrients that are especially important for us as we age. You'll enjoy a food demonstration with tastings and a packet of recipes. Diabetes Clinic: Breaking Down the Food Label Thursday, August 18 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. If you or your family member has diabetes, you know that reading food labels is important. You'll learn to break down a food label to help you decide whether a certain food fits into your diabetic meal plan or not. Diabetes clinics are informal but informational walk-in programs with a different topic each month designed especially for persons living with diabetes. Clinics are free and open to the public.
