1 Karl Kassel, Mayor Presented by the FNSB Parks and Recreation Department Programs are offered to all FNSB Seniors age Tiffany Corrigan Senior/Adaptive Program Coordinator: Phone: Office Phone: Cell July/August Hello Everyone, I would like to extend an invitation to join the Senior Walking Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at the Big Dipper with the exception of July 8th August 8th, due to the Dipper s scheduled closure for maintenance. During those weeks we will be walking at alternate outdoor locations, weather permitting. The downtown walking along the River Park will begin and end at the Morris Thompson Cultural Center. The Bentley Mall location will be at the entrance by Safeway. If the weather is nice, you may walk outside allowing you to visit the Great Harvest Bread Company to see their treats as well as sampling their daily specials. Transportation is available through Van Tran ext.#2, for those walking as well as transportation for those who would like to attend the exercise class held at the Fairbanks Senior Center. If you would like information on joining the Walking Club, please call the Parks & Recreation Senior Program Office and speak with the staff. If you would like more information on requesting rides for our senior outings and programs please call Fairbanks North Star Borough Transportation Department at ext.2. The transportation is at no cost to you when attending designated Parks & Recreation Senior Programs and Outings that are offered on our calendar. This is a great group of seniors sharing in the positive effects of walking, exercise and socialization. For your enjoyment in July, we will attend the free outdoor concerts offered at the Golden Heart Plaza on Wednesday evening as well as the Thursday evening concert offered by the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival with Jazz vocalists performing at the Georgeson Botanical Garden. Other July outings will include shopping on Friday, July 6th due to the 4th of July Holiday falling on Wednesday. July 18th, you may shop at Farmer s Market. The second senior summer picnic will be held at Tanana Lakes on Wednesday, July 25th, 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. This will be a potluck picnic allowing you to bring a dish to share with others. If your last name begins with A-S please bring a side dish, veggies or chips to share. If your last names begin with T-Z please bring fruit or a dessert to share. There will be hotdogs, hamburgers, buns and beverages provided. August activities will include: shopping Fred Meyer West or Safeway, Senior Day at the Tanana Valley Fair, breakfast at Sam s Sourdough Café, Farmer s Market Shopping, and North Pole Seniors dining at Banks Alehouse for lunch. There has been such minimal attendance at the monthly shopping outings, we may be forced to discontinue them beginning in September unless there are at least 6 requests per month to continue this outing. For information you may look on the website: or feel free to call the Parks & Recreation Senior Program Office. Thank you for your help by viewing your newsletter online.
