Within six months of working together, the creative Sullivan was able to get through to Keller, using her own innovative and insightful approach to teaching.

Keller was a young girl living in Tuscumbia, Ala., who had been deaf and blind since before her second birthday. Sullivan was recruited from the Perkins Institute for the Blind to teach Keller. Within six months of working together, the creative Sullivan was able to get through to Keller, using her own innovative and insightful approach to teaching. Keller learned 575 words, the Braille system and multiplication tables up to the number five. A new reality, filled with communication, was unearthed. This was something completely unknown to the Keller family. No one had been able to reach the young Helen until this point. Keller s education under Sullivan continued at the Perkins Institute, after Sullivan decided that her young student needed more resources beyond those available for homeschooling in Tuscumbia. Together, the pair serve as inspiration to deaf and blind students, as well as those attempting to teach such students. And it was during her work with Helen Keller that Anne Sullivan became known as simply the miracle worker.

We all feel jaded and restless from time to time, but if you re suffering from a complete lack of stimulation, try these tricks for snapping out of it: Read something new. Pick a book by a new author, or one that covers a subject you know nothing about. Talk to people. Pick someone you don t know very well, and find out all you can about him or her. Explore your surroundings. Stop ignoring the sights on your daily routine trips. Pay attention to all you see look for something different and original. Rearrange your space. Sometimes shifting things around at home or at work can force you to look at your surroundings, and your life, in a new light. Try a new recipe. Get out of the rut in your kitchen.
