3 2016 Culver Lake Fest Page 3 Jeff Kenney parade marshal With all of Indiana turning its attention to Bicentennial celebrations of the rich history of the Hoosier state, it only made sense for the Culver Lake Fest of 2016 to turn its attention to its own, local history, choosing as its honored parade marshal this year a resident who has emerged as the town s unofficial historian, Jeff Kenney. Kenney, editor of The Culver Citizen newspaper for the past nine years, has divided his time during that period as curator of the Culver Academies Museum in downtown Culver. His foray into local history, however, began years earlier, in what he cites as a pivotal moment which actually occurred miles away from Culver. I was in an antique store in Nappanee, Indiana, recalls Kenney, who grew up in Culver, and whose maternal ancestors were among the first group of pioneers to settle in the Lake Maxinkuckee area in They had a display rack of old postcards and I happened to notice a section of photos of Culver, long past. I hadn t really looked at anything like them, so I began to peruse them and I was fascinated. I thought, I know Jeff Kenney that place, and that place. I had no idea they used to look like that! The photos set off a spark in him, says Kenney, and he eagerly headed to the Culver Public Library the next day, ready to look at those photos and more. To his surprise, however, no one at the library -- even the de facto keeper of things historical at the time, the late Edna Taber -- knew where to find such photos. When Kenney himself became employed at the library in the early 2000s, he set about to change the situation. The Internet was still relatively new at the time, at least to many people, recalls Kenney, but I was given permission from the library director at the time, Scott Pletka, to create a space on the library s website for digital scans of a large collection of postcards given to the Antiquarian and Historical Society by the late John Cleveland, with his wife Patty s permission. That endeavor launched a journey into Culver history which snowballed, not only on the library s website -- which still hosts hundreds (if not thousands) of images and articles Kenney placed there, related to the area s unique and storied history -- but in numerous print articles, publications, talks, tours, and the like. While still at the library, he was instrumental in launching the Antiquarian Society s museum (then known as The Center for Culver History), in the library building (today it s next door, on Jefferson Street, and goes under the name, Museum of Culver & Lake Maxinkuckee History), and the process of collecting artifacts, memorabilia, photos, videos, and information pertaining to Culver history became central to Kenney s work. That process also evolved into the AHS sponsoring his labors in digitizing vintage issues of The Culver Citizen newspaper, local high school yearbooks, and a host of other publications, on its website (culverahs.com; since then, the State Library has added decades worth of the Citizen on its own website). All of the photos and research also led to a number of PowerPoint-based presentations by Kenney pertaining to Culver history; he s given countless talks -- with audio, photo, and video included -- on an array of related subjects at local schools, clubs, and events over the years. These have spurred more kinesthetic events taking those with an interest in Culver history to sites of interest by way of historical walks, canoe paddles, hayrides, bicycle rides, and history boat cruises on Lake Maxinkuckee. Along the way, Kenney s efforts were acknowledged via awards such as the Culver Lions Club s Citizen of the Year honor and recognition as the Culver Chamber of Commerce s Volunteer of the Year. Kenney also points to his partnership, starting in 2006, with Culver Academies historian Robert B.D. Hartman as immensely formative. Under Hartman, Kenney began work on a digitization project which became known as the school s Digital Vault, and included nearly complete runs of its Vedette newspapers, Alumni magazines, Roll Call yearbooks, and many other publications and photos, also full-text searchable and browse-able online (digitalvault.culver.org; Kenney also creates regular features on the Culver Academies History Facebook page). That work evolved into his curatorship at the Academies museum, which began in 2009 when the museum opened, and continues today. Editorship of The Culver Citizen provided opportunities to delve deeper into Culver history as well, and Kenney churned out regular features on people, places, events, and the especially popular unusual facets of Culver s history, in the pages of the community s weekly newspaper of record. That has been one of the most gratifying aspects of all of this, reflects Kenney. To be able to unearth information not readily available, if at all, before then, about the uniqueness of Culver s history. Those of us who, like me, grew up here and love it for our own great memories of the place, I think also find some satisfaction in how much its unusual mixture of town, lake, and Academy is of interest to the broader world of the state, the Kenney Continued on page 4

4 Page Culver Lake Fest Thank you Jeff for your many contributions for discovering and preserving Culver/Union Twp. history. Kenney Continued from page 3 country -- even internationally. Kenney cites examples ranging from the literary and cultural figures who spent summers of yore on -- and were inspired by -- Lake Maxinkuckee, such as Lew Wallace, Cole Porter, and novelist Kurt Vonnegut Jr., to name a few (Kenney has been featured in two film documentaries regarding Vonnegut within the past year); to Culver being home to the first integrated high school basketball team in Indiana; to the many famous graduates of Culver Academies, besides its famous Black Horse Troop and legacy in the history of the Boy Scout movement, among other significant attributes; to its status as home to the only Titanic survivor to settle in Indiana, and its wide regional impact in the ice industry. The list goes on. Most recently, Kenney -- who lives with his wife and the couple s five children in the Culver area -- helped launch Culver-Union Twp. Heritage (culverheritage.org), a non-profit organization aimed at collecting and disseminating Culver s history and preservation. And while Indiana s Bicentennial provides a great opportunity for residents statewide to contemplate the meaning and value of their shared history, Kenney only hopes his efforts help foster an ongoing eye towards community heritage, in Culver and beyond. Local history isn t just about quaint or interesting factoids of the past, he emphasizes. It s not only a way of honoring and learning from our ancestors, but it s also grounding ourselves firmly in a sense of place and meaning. That s especially important in the digital, more transient age in which we live. And I think people are wired to need that, and be happier and better off for it. Congratulations Jeff, we are proud to honor you as our Culver Lake Fest s 2016 parade marshal. Visit culverlakefest.org for the latest schedule Find us on Facebook!
