1 Historic East Greenwich Rhode Island Founded 1677 Visitor s GUIDE 1 Town Hall, 125 reet
2 Shippeetown Rd Welcome to East Greenwich HISTORY. Chartered in 1677 by the Rhode Island Colony, the Town of East Greenwich began as a farming community with a compact harbor, where the town center eventually developed. It later became a thriving seaport, with the farm produce being shipped out of the port for local and coastal trade. Today, East Greenwich has preserved much of its history through its historic reet, historic homes, and museums. COMMUNITY. East Greenwich is conveniently located in the geographic center of Rhode Island, offering easy access to the City of Providence, TF Green Airport, beaches, and beyond. With its wide variety of community programs and events, and its consistent ranking as one of the top school districts in the state, East Greenwich is recognized as an ideal place to live or raise a family. SHOPPING. Come visit our historic reet and enjoy our many fine restaurants and specialty shops. In the warm weather months, be sure to look for our Thursday night reet Strolls, which Yankee Magazine says is One of the top 20 things to do in RI. Visit for more information. 4 The Kentish Guards were formed in 1774 to protect the town of East Greenwich from 5 Tory attack, and were later chartered by the Colonial Assembly as an elite militia, taking responsibility for their own training and equipment. They are still called upon today by state, civic, and educational organizations for patriotic, historical, educational, and ceremonial duties. The Kentish Guards Fife & Drum Corps practices every Wednesday from 7pm 9pm. All are invited to stop by the Kentish Guards Armory during rehearsals. These are rare opportunities to experience the fife and drum musical tradition in its military context Armory Street The Varnum Memorial Armory (built in 1913) contains an 6 extensive military & naval museum, with weapons & artifacts dating from the 16th century to the present. Additionally, the Armory contains an extensive military library, including training manuals and documents, and has been visited by some of the most prominent military historians in the world. The Armory is open the 2nd Saturday of every month, from 10am to 3pm, and by appointment. 6 reet The Varnum House Museum has witnessed Presidents, Generals, and Founding Fathers debating the creation of the United 7 States, strategizing the Revolutionary War, and a lot more. Today, this former manor home of General James Mitchell Varnum (built in 1773) offers informative tours, rare antiques, unique architecture, and a rich history. The Varnum House is open Saturdays and Sundays in June, July, and August, from 10am to 4pm Revolution St reet The New England Wireless and Steam Museum (NEWSM) showcases the history of steam engines and wireless technology, 8 including the only surviving George H. Corliss engine running under steam today, and the oldest surviving working wireless station in the world. The Museum is open every Thursday from 9am to 2pm, and by appointment. Admission is $15 for adults; $10 for ages 14 and under (must be accompanied by an adult) Frenchtown Road
