Pizza and cookies will be served. The Women for A&M-Texarkana also will host a book signing, luncheon and lecture by Dr. Cutrer on Tuesday, March 29, at 11:30 a.m. in the University Center. Tickets for the luncheon are $25. All proceeds benefit scholarships for A&M-Texarkana students. The Art of the Woman explores the life of German-born Elisabet Ney, a sculptor who transfixed philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and left the court of Ludwig of Bavaria to put down new roots in Texas. Born in 1833, Ney gained notoriety in Europe by sculpting the busts of such figures as Ludwig II, Schopenhauer, Garibaldi and Bismarck. In 1871, she abruptly emigrated to America and became something of a recluse until resuming her sculpting career two decades later. Her works included sculptures of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin and can be found in the Texas State Capitol, the U.S. Capitol and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Dr. Emily Cutrer Dr. Cutrer s biography of Ney makes extensive use of primary sources and was the first to appraise both Ney s legend and individual works of art. In the book, Cutrer argues that Ney was an accomplished sculptor coming out of a neglected German neoclassical tradition and that, whatever her failures and eccentricities, she was an important catalyst to cultural activity in Texas. Texas A&M University Press is re-releasing the 1988 book this month as part of its Ellen C. Temple Classics in Texas Women s History series. For Women for A&M-Texarkana luncheon reservations, contact Shannon Gustafson at Shannon.Gustafson@tamut.edu. NPR reporter to speak tonight Anya Kamenetz The Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) at Texas A&M University-Texarkana will host educational futurist, lead education reporter for National Public Radio and acclaimed author Anya Kamenetz for a lecture titled From Generation Debt to DIY U today at 7 p.m. in Eagle Hall of the University Center. Kamenetz will discuss how to solve the debt problems plaguing young adults and what reforms and actions are necessary for young people to escape debt and successfully manage their money. A winner of multiple national prizes from the Education Writers Association, Kamenetz is part of a new team at NPR coordinating national coverage of education.

Call for submissions: common reader Faculty and staff are invited to submit book suggestions for the common reading experience until April 8th. As a collaborative effort among the Office of First Year Experience, Program for Learning and Community Engagement, Student Life and John F. Moss Library, the common reading experience allows new students to bond with each other through shared reading and learning experiences, and it connects the entire community in a common intellectual experience. The common reader serves as the primary text for the freshman seminar course: IS 1100, University Foundations, and other faculty may include it in their coursework or educational activities. The academic theme is Race and Ethnicity and book suggestions must align with the theme. Ideally, the university would like the opportunity to bring the author to campus. Feel free to keep that in mind when submitting suggestions. Please send suggestions to Craig Nakashian, Chair of the FYE Common Reading Experience Subcommittee, at Craig.Nakashian@tamut.edu or to Liz Patterson, Assistant Vice President for Student Success, at Elizabeth.Patterson@tamut.edu.
