Tynda Airmen participated in Sentry Savannah 16-3 at Savannah Air Nationa Guard Base Juy 26 - Aug. 5. Sentry Savannah is the Air Nationa Guard s argest fighter integration, air-to-air training exercise with both fourth and fifth-generation aircraft. During Team Tynda s time at Sentry Savannah, Airmen from the 43rd Fighter and the 2nd Fighter Training focused on dissimiar air combat training, which gives units the opportunity to train with and against mutipe unique aircraft. It is a great opportunity to come out here and work not ony with the T-38 Taons, but aso the F-15 Eages, F-16 Fighting Facons, F-18 Hornets and KC-135 Stratotankers, said Capt. This exercise aso gives Tynda s F-22 B-Course students the opportunity to put their cass work to the test in a safe, controed environment before going out to the combat theater. We put them in a dynamic and stressfu training environment to put the skisets they have earned to the test, Pierce said. 5 12 AF News Produce Piots, Advance Airmen, Feed the Fight CS contract operations New AF vioence prevention speciaists training begins Staff Sgt. Danie Pheps 94th Airift Wing Pubic Affairs DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. Representatives from the major commands and more than 30 Air Force instaations attended training at Dobbins Air Reserve Base Juy to become vioence prevention speciaists. The Speciaists for the Primary Prevention of Vioence is being set up as a new heping agency for Airmen and their famiies. By using advanced scientific techniques, the agency wi be dedicated to preventing a aspects of vioence, from domestic to sexua assaut, and suicide. SPPVs wi be in pace on a Air Force bases wordwide in Apri There has been increased interest over the past year and a haf to focus on prevention rather than responding to situations after the fact, said Dr. Andra Tharp, an Air Force sexua assaut prevention and response prevention expert. The Air Force heard that and created this position to address that issue. Groups assisting with the training incuded the Division of Vioence Prevention at the Centers for Disease Contro and Prevention, and Green Dot Etc. When we earned the position was authorized by the secretary of the Air Force, we engaged the CDC to give the prevention speciaists the strongest training possibe into doing what works and using a pubic heath approach to prevent interpersona and sef-directed vioence, Tharp said. We are thried that CDC has partnered with us for this training. The CDC provided a background for the training to give the speciaists a strong foundation in the prevention science underying vioence prevention, which wi equip them in their roes, Tharp added. When designing the training, the organizers thought about what key competencies the speciaists needed in order to be vauabe resources at their instaation, Tharp said. One piece was the CDC s abiity to provide the prevention background and research; the other was appying the pubic heath to prevention practice, which was where Green Dot came in. We ve never done training to this extent ike we have with the Air Force, said Dr. James Mercy, the director of the Division of Vioence Prevention with the CDC. We see the Air Force as a pioneer in prevention. We thought it woud be a great opportunity to work together where we coud earn from each other. Dr. Dorothy Edwards, the Green Dot founder and organizer, said that for a ong time, interpersona vioence prevention was soey focused on things ike teing men not to do it and women not to wak aone at night. We then reaized there was a third roe, the bystander, Edwards said. So, instead of focusing on what not to do, we started focusing on what can we do. Both agencies had a past partnership with the Air Force, but on smaer eve. This training aowed them to expand that partnership. We had been working with the miitary on vioence prevention for a whie, Mercy said. We wanted to strengthen U.S. Air Force photo/don Peek Laura Chiang, from the Center for Disease Contro and Prevention, interacts with a group of participants during a discussion on barriers to effective prevention at the Primary Prevention of Vioence Foundation training seminar at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia, Juy 19, The 10-day training program took pace from Juy and invoved guest speakers from Headquarters Air Force, the CDC and Green Dot Etc. our partnership with the Air Force because they have been a pioneer in this, especiay with suicide prevention. We thought this woud be a great opportunity for us to earn from each other and prevent further vioence in the United States. Green Dot hed training sessions at individua bases for few years, Edwards said. When the (Air Force) decided to do a comprehensive approach, the diaogue began, she said. They didn t want to just wing it. They were driven by the research. The research and expertise in vioence prevention came from the CDC. The CDC is the argest organization in the word in regards to preventing vioence, Mercy said. We have subject matter experts in different types of vioence, covering the whoe range. That expertise incudes how you measure, prevent and protect from different types of vioence. That s the information that was shared in our training, sharing what we have found out through severa decades of research. The CDCs experts taught how to take that information and use it to impement programs on the ground, Mercy added. They aso spoke on the magnitude of the probem in the U.S. who is at a higher risk of vioence, characteristics of victims, who is most ikey to be a perpetrator and specific programs that seem to work. It s a ot of information, but it is easiy understood, Mercy said. The research from the CDC was used to deveop Green Dot, Edwards said. So, the fow from the CDC to Green Dot was easiy foowed as Edwards taught impementation. The Green Dot strategy is to reinvigorate peope and et them know they can do something, Edwards said. This is about being reaistic about what the bystanders can do. It s not that easy to just step in. Part of this is acknowedging that good peope can get stuck and have barriers. This gives bystanders more natura and reaistic toos. The training group was excited about the future of this position and how they have been abe to empower the SPPVs. The Air Force is so driven right now to getting this right, Edwards said. This is an extraordinary position, and it has been an exciting training to be part of. 5 MILITARY AND FAMILY LIFE COUNSELOR PROGRAM Miitary famiies face unique chaenges.
