It is hard to believe the pace of life and how fast 2017 has flown by was a year filled with many changes, such as the US government and many heartaches around the globe with natural disasters and terrorism. As nurses, we recognize change on all fronts and how it affects the psyche of the human race. No matter our differing political views, cultural backgrounds, or religious belief; nurses come together for the common good. This is no exception in the realm of perianesthesia nursing. When one of our colleagues is in distress, we come to their aid and offer assistance. Always hoping for the best outcome. If the outcome is not what we desired, then we grieve together and support one another. To be a great perianesthesia nurse, we need the skills and support of our colleagues, as well as a specific knowledge and skill set of our profession. In order to build upon our perianesthesia skills, we must continue the journey of education. An excellent and highly esteemed way of learning vital skills and the "why" behind perianesthesia nursing is to become certified. There are two options: CAPA and CPAN certification. Another educational opportunity is the yearly ASPAN National Conference, which will be held April 28th-May 3rd, 2018, in Anaheim, California. The third option is to attend OSPAN conferences. The 2018 OSPAN Spring Conference will be held in Tulsa, March 24th, This conference will have speakers, such as ASPAN's Current President, Susan Russell, and the ABPANC Past President, Linda Lakdawala, Please go to and for further information about these conferences. The OSPAN Board of Directors are excited to organize and present opportunities to existing perianesthesia nurses and to encourage the future perianesthesia nurses. We hope you consider joining OSPAN and eventually joining the Board of Directors. We are continuously looking for ways to improve and provide the best opportunities for you. Once again, I wish you a very safe, prosperous, and blessed 2018; and thank you for allowing me to be the President of OSPAN. 8 Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 8 ASPAN Region 2 Director Greetings from our Region 2 Director, Jennifer Kilgore ASPAN Update Greetings OSPAN Thanks for the opportunity to write to this awesome group of perianesthesia nurses and to be a part of Oklahoma! I have given a great deal of thought on how to inspire this beautiful, brave group! I want to talk about belonging. America is in the midst of a spiritual crisis. I think it would be difficult to argue that we are not facing heated struggles that quite frankly are uncomfortable. Everyone has opinions, beliefs, ideas, passions and mix that with technology and media the flame ignites big time! According to research studies by social scientist Brene Brown from University of Houston - We are disconnected. Her research revealed that people today feel they are losing that sense of shared humanity. The world feels heartbroken. We ve sorted ourselves into factions based on our politics and ideas. We ve turned away.. from God and from one another. Many would attest that we are more isolated. We are quick to press toward blame and rage. Many are lonely and untethered and scared. With emotions running at an all time high many discussions on issues frankly are dominated by an Us vs Them mentality. Media is all forms fuels it. The very things that have brought us together are breaking - football games, concerts, corporate worship honoring the American flag - mass shootings in Las Vegas, churches, schools removing historical figures The very things we treasure and give joy and hope are under attack. Why? Where is this coming from? Politically, spiritually, economically, socially, culturally, linguistically even our words there is division. We feel anxious about saying the wrong thing, expressing the wrong opinion, and fear of being excluded. Really, what do we have to keep us, to bond us, to unify us? As a nation, as components, units, families. What happens if we are divided? We fall. Its time to recognize and make It our mission to come together. How can our society move past shame and hate toward empathy and connection? Let s face it everyone wants to be a part of something, but it has got to be real, not fake! Not conditional! As Americans, as ASPAN, I believe we must cultivate belonging! Recognizing that we are all inextricably connected to each other through nursing, our calling - through love and compassion! Brene Brown gives us four keys to true belonging. Make eye contact with people you disagree with get to know them. She says, people are hard to hate up close Much stealthier and easy online, behind a computer screen. Don t just agree to disagree go deeper. Share the reasons why the issue or topic is so important to you. When you want to run away or launch an attack, say Tell me more. Keep your eye on the future for outcomes you both hope for Share collective joy and pain there is a sense of true belonging spending time sharing emotional experiences with large, diverse groups (church, sporting events, concerts, services, seminars, conferences) Seek collective joy, show up for experiences of collective pain for real, in person not online, it more difficulty to deny our human connection. Sociologists observed that religious ceremonies, church create collective effervescence a sense of share emotion, connection, and sacredness. When we feel more similar to others, we feel more concern for them, we listen better, and we stick it out longer.

9 Jenny Kilgore Speak up (NICELY) when you disagree. People who feel a sense of belonging don t stay silent in these situations, but they do not attack either. They ask for clarification or evidence, they listen, they re respectful. Embrace the paradox Strong back, soft front. Which means on one hand they have principles and boundaries; they will speak up and show you their authentic self, even when it s uncomfortable. But they are also compassionate and vulnerable; they don t lash out or put up a wall in front of their emotions. True belonging involves the courage to stand alone. In closing, we should never allow differences be it cultural, social, political to be elevated above the message, above our collective purpose. These things can weasel their way quite stealthily into the group and divide. I encourage you to actively seek out ways to unify, communicate and love! Belonging, Jenny

While hospitals are seeking nurses with higher degrees, some of you may be wondering if you should return to school. As a recent graduate, I was asked how it was returning to school as a working registered nurse, and why I chose to do so. As a seasoned nurse in the perioperative setting, I have had many opportunities over the past three decades to serve as a preceptor or mentor to new nurses. Shortly after the new millennium, however, I began to meet new nurses who seemed to have great insight related to best practices and the future of the nursing profession. Best practice was an unfamiliar concept to me and not knowing where those ideas came from, or the processes involved, I began to feel outdated in a sense. I also began hearing that the healthcare industry wanted a higher percentage of nurses with a bachelor s degree but why now? I remembered hearing those exact words when I completed my associate s degree decades ago, but because of the unresolved nursing shortage it never seemed to be a concern to my career. This time, however, I sensed a change in the profession. It seemed the newer nurses were on the forefront of something bigger than simply having years of experience, and I began to feel my confidence slip. In 2011, I became nationally certified in my specialty thinking that would relieve my insecurities. Being nationally certified, however, came with exposure to the specialty s standards of care, position statements, and practice recommendations along with exposure to their quarterly journals. Consequently, the exposure raised more questions than answers. I was curious who decides best practice? Where do those ideas come from? I kept wondering - what are they teaching in nursing school today and what has changed since I was a student? It was clear that the curriculum had changed over the past decade regarding policy development and the influential role nurses play in their practice, so I finally decided, several years later, to return to school to obtain a bachelor s degree in nursing.

13 The thought made me cringe. Even though nursing school was decades ago, how could I ever forget the sleep deprivation, the care plans, and the long hours of studying? How much would it cost? Would my family understand? Do I really need another degree? I will admit, in the beginning, I was terrified. After all, it had been decades since I opened a textbook and was a working full-time registered nurse already having to juggle long hours and a demanding call schedule. Where would I find the time? At the same time, however, I felt motivated and excited that I had finally made the decision to go for it. So, what was it like? Surprisingly, I met many nurses in the classroom who were experiencing the same fears as myself and, much to my relief, the classes were small and there were no nursing care plans or examinations! Mostly, the program I chose consisted of writing papers, working on group projects with classmates, and learning how to create PowerPoint presentations. Of course, I had to re-arrange my lifestyle temporarily to study, had to burn a little midnight oil, and missed out on some social time with friends and family, but it was not long before I realized that I had made the right decision. Over those two semesters, I discovered more had changed than I originally thought. Of significance, I discovered the value of multi-disciplinary collaboration and the influential role nurses play in policy development and in the hospital boardroom. Although my job description did not change upon graduation, I changed. I continue to work as a bedside nurse in the perioperative setting, but now have the necessary knowledge to initiate changes in my practice and have great insight into what affects the care I provide to my patients. Additionally, I gained tools to better serve my profession and established life-long friendships in the process. Ironically, I also felt the calling to help other registered nurses, who may have the same fears that I had experienced, return to school to obtain their bachelor s degrees in nursing. Without hesitation, I applied to graduate school and upon graduation from that program, I accepted an adjunct position teaching in a RN-BSN program. I am excited that now I can help other registered nurses accomplish their goals with confidence. Today, there is a multi-disciplinary approach to caring for the hospitalized patient that includes physical and respiratory therapists, hospitalists, informatics specialists, and a variety of advanced practice nurses in addition to the bedside nurse and the patient s primary care physician. Not only do nurses have the potential to influence patient care, but the opportunities are here for nurses to play an active role in the hospital boardroom. Nurses are leaders, whether they are guiding a practice change, educating a patient, or directing a team of other nurses. I believe nurses do not realize their full potential to advocate for their patients and their profession, and that returning to school will certainly help them to do so. Returning to school was the best professional decision I have made, and the knowledge and friendships I gained in the process are invaluable. My only regret is that I wish I had returned sooner. There are a variety of nursing programs to fit the needs of those nurses pursuing an online degree, as well as programs that fit the needs of nurses who desire to learn in a classroom setting among other nurses. There are amazing nurses out there and I am excited to see where they take the profession.
