The School serves as an invaluable resource within the region, known for its world class reputation as a center for education, research and best practices. The conference will take place at the Stony Brook School of Nursing in the Health Sciences Center. Those staying at the hotel are able to leave their cars in the lot and walk (it s a short distance), or if need be, take the shuttle. There is parking in the Stony Brook Hospital lot. Parking will be validated at the conference. From the parking lot follow signs to the hospital entrance. Walk straight through the hospital lobby to the rear of the building where you ll find a series of escalators. Continue down to Level 2, which houses the School of Nursing and is where the conference is located. All other sessions and meals will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Health Sciences Center on the Stony Brook campus.

Marybeth Heyden, RN, DNP, is a pediatric nurse practitioner in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook Children s Hospital, and is Clinical Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook School of Nursing. Dr. Pena specializes in the care of athletes and disorders of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and is team orthopedic physician for Stony Brook University, Suffolk County Community College, and Dowling College. Dr. Penna is a graduate of SUNY Brooklyn/Downstate Medical School and completed his residency at SUNY Stony Brook in Orthopedic Surgery with a fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital Northwell Health, Sports Medicine. 11:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. NYSASN General Meeting 12:00 1:00 p.m. Lunch Evaluation of Belly Pain in Children and Adolescents Anupama Chawla, MD From anxiety to emergency: How to access your student s complaints of abdominal discomfort. Dr. Chawla is a pediatric gastroenterologist in Stony Brook, New York and is affiliated with Stony Brook University Hospital. She received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College and has been in practice for more than 20 years. She is one of 4 doctors at Stony Brook University Hospital who specialize in Pediatric Gastroenterology. Symptoms of Common Pediatric/Adolescent Skin Conditions Adrienne Haughton, MD What to make of the rashes, bumps and itchy patches that school nurses frequently encounter. Dr. Haughton is Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatological Surgery and Medical Dermatology at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and did her residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center with a Dermatology Internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. She is an expert in the treatment of alopecia and skin rejuvenation. Note: Sessions are offered consecutively in the order listed. There are no concurrent sessions, allowing participants to attend all sessions.
4 Saturday, November 3rd Sunday, November 4 3:00 3:30 p.m. Break Tick-borne Diseases What You Need to Know Anna-Marie Wellins DNP, M.Ed., ANP-C As the incidence of tick borne diseases continues to increase worldwide, those commonly found throughout New York state will be discussed along with the associated symptoms, treatments and measures of prevention. Dr. Anna-Marie Wellins joined the Stony Brook School of Nursing faculty in the Advanced Graduate Nursing Education Program in She completed her DNP degree in 2014 at Stony Brook University and continues to work in primary care as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in Sag Harbor, New York. In 2014, she became increasingly involved in tick borne diseases in her clinical practice due to its high prevalence on the east end of Long Island. She is currently a member of the East End Tick Advisory Council, which is involved in tick borne disease education, treatment and prevention to the community and resource to local health care professionals. Anna-Marie is presently a coinvestigator in a NIH funded study on Lyme disease. 4:30 p.m. Dinner on your own 8:00 9:00 a.m. Breakfast Under Water Bryan Fitzgerald This short film is a true story based on the writer s own high school experiences as he attempts to cope with life events spiraling beyond his control. Bryan Fitzgerald is the writer, director and lead actor of the film short Under Water. Bryan, 28 years old from Huntington, NY, has struggled with abuse of alcohol, drugs and prescription pills. I am not above it; I have not conquered it. I am, however, using art, film, and teamwork to not only help and forgive myself, but also to share my story and help others avoid the pitfalls I nearly drowned in. Recognizing and Responding to Substance Use Disorders in a School Setting Leslie Marino, MD How can we, as school nurses, help stem the tide of alcohol and opioid abuse that is sweeping our country? Research shows that signs of potential drug and alcohol abuse in adults and teens often appear at an early age. One tool that helps with early intervention and follow-up is SBIRT which stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment. 10:15 10:30 a.m. Break Beginning Mindfulness Dr. Cheryl Kurash Discussion of the essential elements of mindfulness, used as a method of stress reduction and dealing with everyday life s ups and downs. Cheryl Kurash, PhD, a licensed psychologist and certified MBSR teacher, maintains a private practice of psychotherapy and mindfulness training in Stony Brook. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and has served as Coordinator of Mindfulness Programs at the Counseling and Psychological Services, Stony Brook University; Assistant Director of Counseling for Training at SBU; and Associate Professor of Psychology at SUNY/Empire State College. 11:30 a.m. 12:00 noon Raffles, Final Evaluation, Certificates Stony Brook Village By Myself / CC-SA-1.0 Dr. Marino is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Division of Behavioral Health Services and Policy Research at New York State Psychiatric Institute.
