2 Hello Michigan ENA! Can you believe we are half way through 2017! Did we have a plan for what we wanted to get accomplished? We sure did and still have more to get accomplished, but let s review where we are at: We planned what will be happening this year at our January State meeting. Elections for President-Elect, Secretary and Director at Large. Leadership Conference in Las Vegas for the President, Secretary, Treasurer and TNCC and ENPC Committee Chair. Delegate selections for attending the General Assembly in St. Louis MO in September, Spring Conference in May at Soaring Eagle, Day on the Hill in May. Awards for Excellence in Emergency Nursing, Nurse Manger/Leader Award, Rising Star Award, Life time Achievement and Chapter Award. State Council meetings will be March 24th, May 9th, September 7th and November 10th. Who is attending Emergency Nursing 2017 in St. Louis. And let's not forget what is happening with Government Affairs. Oh and we want to also increase our members. Elections for President Elect, Secretary and Director at large will be held with voting in August. But first comes time for nominations. If you are interested in running for one of those positions, please send me your nomination by June 30th. Want more information about what each position is all about, go to ENA.org under Membership/Officer Orientation/Education. The website michiganena.org under the MENA bylaws, will provide the length of each position. Would love to answer any questions you may have. Gerri Muller the State Council TNCC and ENPC Chair and I attended the State and Chapter Leaders Orientation 2017 in Las Vegas, this past February. This is a meeting for new officers and this year the TNCC/ENPC Chair was in invited to participate in multiple topics: Updates with ENA Board of Directors, Digital Communication, Government Relations at the State Level: How You and Your members can Effect Change, Leadership Development, Member Engagement, Foundation Association law and TNCC/ENPC updates & feedback. We both shared what we learned at our March State meeting. Certainly some of the highlights is the networking with the ENA leaders from different states. People sharing what has worked well and what hasn t. Meeting those individuals that work at the National ENA offices, putting faces with names. Certainly got some creative ideas from all those we met. We looked at the Delegate Tool that we have used in the past and realized we didn t have the time to make changes before the need to us it for We asked for volunteers to work on the tool this fall so we will have it ready for We asked for Delegate applications for the 2017 General Assembly to be in by April 15th. We had 21 Michigan ENA members apply to be Delegates. National ENA allocated Michigan 16 delegates and 1 alternate. We have notified those 17 individuals with confirmation being expected back by June 15th. Day on the Hill is when each State sends members to Washington DC to be able to meet with Senators and Representatives. Michigan has in the past sent 2 nurses. This year it was on May 2-3, We had two of our members ready to represent Michigan but due to changes neither were able to attend this year. Each year at our Annual Spring Conference we have awards that our members have nominated and then voted on to win. These are presented on the evening before the conference. The following are the awards presented. Michigan Excellence in Emergency Nursing Award (started in 1981) which honors a member who exhibits passion, knowledge, skill and professionalism in Emergency Care. The Nurse Manager/Leader award which honors a nurse who has consistently demonstrated excellence in the profession of emergency Nursing and has mad significant contributions through an emergency management role. Rising Star Award is for a new member or a member that has recently become active and has promoted their chapter or the Michigan ENA. Chapter award exemplifies outstanding work and contributions to ENA. Lifetime Achievement Award is for longtime member with achievements in Emergency Nursing. Demonstration of service/commitment beyond job expectations. This year we had one nomination for two awards, so we did not vote. Congratulations to our two award winners! Lifetime Achievement went to Chis Baker MSN, RN, CEN and Michigan Excellence in Emergency Nursing went to Margaret Keehl MSN, RN, FNP, BC. Spring Conference was a success! Seeing friends, making new friends and learning, can t get much better! We will have a review of the 2017 conference from Gerri Muller and Jill Zuteck our conference leaders. Have you heard about Senate Bill #33? billanalysis/senate/pdf/2017-sfa-0033-f.pdf. With very short notice we were able to testify in support of Bill #33 on January 31st to the Senate Judicial Committee. Six Michigan ENA members attended the hearing with Becky Jarvi and myself testifying. We asked fer letters from our members or their colleagues about involvement in violent situations while providing care to patients. We received 25 letters that we printed and provided to the Senate Judicial committee. The bill passed the Judicial committee with an amendment. The bill has not gone to the Senate floor for discussion or a vote yet. Currently the focus in Lansing is the budget. We will get together to go to Lansing in Mid-September to continue to support the legislation.

3 Look forward to the next six months as we have Elections for President Elect, Secretary and Director at large in August. General Assembly with Resolutions to discuss in September as just a couple of events to look forward too. Next Michigan State Council Meeting: September 7, 2017 November Little Traverse Bay (LTB)ENA The summer meeting was held on June 7th following a fun day with EZ IO At McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital. EZ IO was here all day so attendees (EMS Providers, Doctors and RN s ) could test their EZ IO and intubation skills. Future 2017 LTB ENA meeting dates are August 15th, September 19th and October 17th. IQSIP As we all know, distracted driving is a huge concern for us as health care providers and parents! Currently our committee is putting together an educational program focused on distracted driving (yet unnamed to use in schools. The program starts with a video and then a mock crash with injuries, fatalities, with the end result being a hearse leaving with a body and a med flight leaving the scene with a transport. There are new people that are being added to this committee as there was lots of interest at the MENA Spring Conference. It is a big endeavor as is IQSIP. There are many parts to this and if you have a special interest or skill please join us. I will be contacting those on the list for a Go To Meeting Call in the near future (TBD). If you are interested in this or any part of IQSIP, please contact me at: dwren10044@aol.com. If you are unfamiliar with IQSIP go to the MENA or ENA web site and look under committees. There are a lot of areas where we can make a difference! Diane Wren RN IQSIP Chairperson National ENA Opportunities Have you gotten the that is from National ENA asking if you re interested in joining one of the National Committees? We have many from Michigan that have said yes, I would like to be involved. There are 31 different committees and we have Michigan ENA members on some of them. Will be asking those members to tell us about the work they are doing over the next few Triage Notes. Susan Maycock DNP, RN, ACNS-BC is on the Peer Review Education Committee As a volunteer member for the Peer Review Education Committee (PREC), I serve as nurse peer reviewer for ENA s Accredited Approver Unit (the Emergency Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation). This includes completing reviews of continuing nursing education applications for educational conferences for ENA chapters from across the nation under the leadership of the Nurse Peer Review Leader at ENA. I am actively involved in evaluating continuing nursing education applications to evaluate adherence to the ANCC Criteria. In addition, my role on the PREC provides an opportunity for me to participate as a pilot study subject for ENA s Accredited Provider Unit as well as a content reviewer for ENA s continuing nursing education products.

4 Facebook? Twitter? You Tube? LinkedIn? Pinterest? Snapchat? Blogging? Podcasting? The realm of social media is far reaching and affects our everyday lives. It is important to learn about, understand and perhaps even embrace this 21st century wave of hypercommunication. Without embracing it, individuals, corporations, nursing organizations, and even perhaps individual departments will likely be left behind in the realm of reaching out to the community, advertising, educating and interacting with those who are being served. So what is social media, and where did it start? Probably the first rudimentary digital interconnectivity was founded during the 1940 s when NASA attempted to interlink computers one with another. While those computers initially simply shared numbers and bits of data, that was really the beginning of the World Wide Web. In the late 1960 s CompuServe allowed private individuals to communicate. As early as the 1970 s was invented, though it became popular in the 1990 s, as did bulletin board systems where people could connect with others who shared similar interests. servers such as America Online invited users to meet each other and the term chatroom was coined. In the late 90 s, public blogging was made available, allowing anyone to share their thoughts and opinions and garner followers. Myspace soon followed. Around 2006 Facebook, which was originally created as a campus communication tool, was opened to public users, and social media exploded. While social media initially was simply a forum for people to share thoughts and ideas and to make and keep up with friends, the massive amount of time that people spent on the medium drew politicians, educators and others who were interested in shaping public opinion, public policy and to feel the pulse of society. Social media truly has grown into a huge dollar entity with advertising that rivals any traditional media. People often get their news, sports, entertainment, and even health information and advice online, from a variety of sources including social media. Social media can affect a nurse s practice in many ways. While departments, agencies, hospitals and educational facilities all should have a social media presence, it is important to think through the various risks and benefits, and to develop individual policies and guidelines as to what is posted, why and by whom. Many organizations have developed policies already, including the Emergency Nurse Association (see the state and national websites). There are benefits but also risks to reading, interacting and posting on social media. Here is a brief overview of a few of the common benefits, risks and pitfalls to an individual nurse. Benefits of social media: Nursing is an ever changing environment, and social media such as special interest groups on Facebook, reading reputable blogs or listening to reputable podcasts can be a great way to gain education in an entertaining way. Following popular trusted authors or speakers on Facebook, checking in to interesting podcasts, or reading blogs written by people or administrated by agencies that pique your interest. To get started, here are a few popular Emergency medicine and nursing podcasts: EMCrit, ERcast, The Nursing Crash Cart, NurseZone, and others (Search for them!). Find your favorite author and follow him/her on Facebook. Follow professional organizations such as ENA, ANA, your local hospital and of course Michigan ENA. Follow favorite nursing leaders and organizations on twitter too. Other popular and fun to follow entities include KevinMD and ZdogMD (available on Facebook, as well as on Youtube and other social media). Facebook, Twitter LindedIn and other sites are great places to network with coworkers and other professionals too. Facebook has been used for everything from unofficial private pages for employees to try to find shift changes, ask for help, or ride share. LinkedIn initially was created to be a professional networking sit, and is often used for job searching or recruiting,: but Facebook is also often used to advertise for new jobs. In addition, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media are great ways to connect with other professionals across the world. By connecting with others far away, one can gain perspective, share ideas, and help each other to learn and grow. Some organizations have embraced social media and have started their own forums. One to check out if you have not yet is ENA Connect a chat room / discussion site for ENA members. Social media has been used by individuals and organizations to connect or educate the public in many ways, but one intriguing use is during disasters. Facebook in particular has been used to dispense information out to the public and the public has used Facebook or other media to share their status as safe (search on your favorite internet engine for Facebook Safety check) Twitter also has a method of pushing public messages to those near a disaster. Google has a disaster hotspot for relief agencies.

5 Pitfalls of social media: While social media has many benefits, one must be verycareful to avoid certain pitfalls. With social media, anyone can be an author and everyone has a voice. With this great power comes great responsibility and risks to personal and professional safety, privacy and legality.!. The first rule that every person that posts on any media must remember is that no matter how private the initial settings are, all social media is a very public and very permanent. Anything can be screenshotted and shared or re-shared by friends or those who mean one harm. 2. Beware of posting anything negative about coworkers, nursing leaders, ones employer, patients or physicians. Such posts can at the very least affect your employment status, and could lead to charges or a lawsuit-facebook posts have been prosecuted as slander, libel, or a breach of confidentiality. 3. Do not post pictures of patients-even if the patient is not recognizable or identifiable. Be careful of even posting pictures of you and your friends at work. 4. Even during off hours, beware of what you post: remember a growing number of potential employers will do an internet search or social media search to see what kind of person you are. 5. Be aware of posts of a political, religious or controversial nature. Again, remember that every post is potentially out on the web forever. Before you post anything, think through who may read it and whether you would like everyone to know your opinions about each topic. 6. Do not believe everything you hear on the internet. Remember that the Internet makes every person who can type an author, and everyone has a voice. Research how to recognize trusted sites and how to verify any story you find. Do not re-tweet or repost news or stories of questionable nature. 7. Protect yourself: Google your name on a frequent basis, and be aware of what is out there with your name on it. If you find something concerning, undesirable, or offensive, take steps to have it removed. 8. Be aware of your employers policies on social media, personal device use, photography, and recording, and be very careful to follow those guidelines while at work. 9. While social media should be used, do not allow social media to be your only form of communication. Some conversations should never take place online, but should be face to face. So, to summarize, social media technologies have emerged and is growing at a dizzying speed. As nurses, we should embrace these tools and use them to our benefit to grow, expand our horizons, create new connections, learn, and communicate. With care embracing social media can be safe, fun, and educational.
