1 BRITISH COLUMBIA EMERGENCY NURSES ASSOCIATION ENABC NEWSLETTER SPRING 2014 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT SHERRY STACKHOUSE INSIDE THIS ISSUE: MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT MEMBERSHIP IN- FORMATION & KEY CONTACTS NENA CONFER- ENCE CTAS 2 NENA NOTICE TO MEMBERS SUMMER SAFETY TIPS UPCOMING COURSES CTAS APP AVAIL- ABLE EMEGENCY NURSES WITHOUT BORDERS WEDOC In follow up to the fall message ED nurses around the province continue to be faced with increasing volumes and strain to staff both rural and urban EDs. Our physician colleagues are feeling similar pressures. H1N1 caused a flurry of activity which seems to have subsided somewhat. The World Health Organization (WHO) regularly updates health care providers with the novel viruses in other parts of the world that may or may not come our way. We all have access to this valuable information through websites or twitter feeds. A significant amount of work has been occurring to relaunch the NENA website this spring. You may have noticed that we have stopped updating our provincial site as we will become a link off of the national website. This will both save us money and promote the NENA/ENABC connection. The board will shortly be able to see the new site and test functions before we go live. There continues to be work restructuring the NENA governance and this will be voted on sometime this spring as well. Stay tuned for more information. ENABC coordinated an educational webinar hosted by the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council, entitled, Targeted Temerature Managment. Our thanks for an informative and professional session by Dr Noah Alexander. The session can be viewed at blog/knowledge/nena targeted temperaturemanagement/. We are actively planning our April session which will also be sponsored by BCPSQC. Our provincial board is meeting April 4 th to plan our years work, including how the NENA restructuring will impact provincial activities and we can best serve our provincial members. For those of you interested in ED Operations, consider attending the 4 th annual Western Emergency Department Overcrowding Conference (WEDOC), to be held this year in Edmonton,.May 1 and 2 nd This conference will be preceded by a nursing workshop On April 30 th. The agenda for this one day workshop will be out shortly and the registration cost is $ Save the date for NENA 2014 in Toronto, Ontario April 27 29, Victoria emergency staff are organizing another Top 5 conference, April 26th, You can be sure there will be something for everyone! There is some kind of amazing energy flowing over that way and we are grateful the conference is continuing. BC is once again partnering with ENA Washington, as well as Oregon to host a conference Sept 18 th /19 th 2014 in Vancouver Washington. We are continuing this partnership, and adding Oregon due the very positive feedback from previous collaborations. Thank you to Sharron Lyons for working so hard to establish this link. Jan Calnan, our secretary, stepped down due to her commitment as NENA president. Colleen Brayman our communication officer, will be filling in this role in addition to her own until we elect new officers this fall. We welcome Anne Morgenstern from Penticton in the role of treasurer. Kitty Murray will be handing over to her at our board meeting in April. My thanks to both incoming and outgoing members, this work wouldn t have happened without you and your energy. Your executive needs your voices. I challenge each of you to encourage a friend to join our journey. Yes, I said this last time too! We are seeking nominations next fall for key positions, so join in. 2 Page 2 NENA S PAN-AMERICAN CONFERENCE 2014 Please join your fellow Emergency Nurses from across the Americas at our upcoming NENA conference in Toronto, Ontario April 27 19, There will be speakers from Canada, United States, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and attendees from Costa Rica!! Information can be found at NATIONAL EMERGENCY NURSES AFFILIATION PAN- AMERICAN CONFERENCE Toronto, Ontario, Canada April 27-29, 2014 Notice to NENA Members ATTENTION ALL CTAS INSTRUCTORS The CTAS National Working Group is sponsoring a NENA 2014 Pre- Conference Workshop for all CTAS Instructors in which networking, sharing of teaching methods and ideas, suggestions for future revisions etc. will be discussed. Cost: $50.00 Coffee and lunch included. Watch for the upcoming Proposed Bylaw Changes to bring NENA into Compliance with the Not-For-Profit Corporations Act Overview The NENA Board of Directors met in November of 2013 to discuss changes to NENA s governance structure required by the new federal legislation for Not-for-Profits (NFP). These changes must take place before the deadline of October The new NFP federal act establishes a common legal foundation for the governance of all not-for-profit Organizations in Canada. It sets out new regulations for how non-profit organizations are governed, managed and accountable to their members. As a result the NFP has established a set of default bylaws which all not-for-profit organizations will follow. In particular the new legislation does not permit appointments to non-profit Boards of Directors. The Legislation requires that individuals and their commitment and skills (and not their positions or affiliations) be the determining factor for their successful election to a non-profit Board of Directors. The legislation also requires more transparency and accountability from Boards regarding how they conduct business and are accountable to their members. One of the key visions developed during the Board exercise was that NENA will strive to provide health sector leadership, training support, policy advocacy, and membership growth to position NENA as the gold standard in Canadian Emergency Nursing.
3 Page 3 Falls from Windows & balconies Summer Safety Tips The risk of children falling out windows and off balconies increases dramatically with better weather. During the winter months they may have been able to lean against windows to see what is happening out side. Use safety latches to prevent windows from opening more than 10 cm Furniture and planters should be moved away from windows or balcony edges Safety latches should be installed on screens Talk to children about window and balcony safety Do not leave children unattended on balconies You can prevent hamburger Disease Every year cases of "hamburger disease" are identified in BC. This disease can lead to internal bleeding, kidney failure or even death. Some patients have needed kidney transplants. Refrigerate or freeze meat as soon as possible after buying Thaw meat in the refrigerator, not at room temperature Wash hands well before preparing or touching food Wash cooking tools, cutting boards, serving platters, counters with diluted bleach You can prevent tick bites Use light-coloured clothing, tuck pants into socks or boots Walk on clear trails, not through tall grass Check clothes and scalp for ticks after leaving areas where ticks may live You can prevent sun burns For children over six months, use sunscreen with SPF factor of at least 15 Keep babies under six months out of the direct sun Limit exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wear hats, long sleeves, pants and sunglasses Prevent burns by keeping children safely away from hot barbecues and campfires
